Marss is good with rushdown characters, but Edam doesn’t play a lot of those. Most of esams roster are characters marss hates 😂 I don’t think it was really his knowledge that made it happen, just marss has simpler characters overall to play as

At their peak they are super technical, but jokers basic combos aren’t hard, especially if you have a basic idea of his play style. Same with snake. The only one I think is truly hard is zss. It’s a lot harder to try and play Steve, min min, and samus when you’re used to actually interacting with people

Then it is up to the Panda people to guess their most played based on their other characters they play (like 2-9), have the Panda guess then show the number 1. Or something like that. Honestly that's probably the first time I've seen Marss actually lose to ZSS. If you know the MU, she really isn't that great of a character. High Tier still, but certainly not top tier. Also ZSS vs. Min Min is probably +1 MU for ZSS.

Marss has better character mastery of his roster, but ESAM is basically unrivaled in pure fundamentals when it comes to this game. If they went 5v5 normal mains Marss would probably win, but ESAM is so good at fundies he could main random and beat most people.
I actually got the opposite impression. Marss has better fundies overall, but he plays primarily rush down. He isn't quite as good at switching gears to a more campy playstyle, and he doesn't know the combos for esam's characters. Esam's combo game was his main advantage and the fact his roster composed of campy characters Marss isn't used to playing and combo heavy characters that he doesn't know the combos for held him back. Esam is a madman when it comes to labbing combos, and he knows combos for every character basically because he gets bored or curious and spends an hour labbing out these combos, even if he doesn't play the character. Esam said it himself, Marss out neutrals him repeatedly but esam is able to use his superior combo game to overcome the difference.
True, his combo game is actually nutty, but without it he's just a top player. With that combo game he is potentially the best player (depending of course upon how well Esam is feeling that day, what he ate for breakfast and the night before, what the weather is like, the position of the moon in the sky, and the position of the stars in the sky and whether or not Venus is in retrograde or not.)
