The S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald was a Great Lakes Freighter, it was considered the biggest ship on the Great Lakes at her time as well as the fastest. The Edmund Fitzgerald earned herself many nicknames an example of a few being “The Titanic of the Great Lakes” “Toledo Express” “Fitz” “Mighty Fitz” “Big Fitz” “The Pride of the American Side”. The Mighty Fitz was 728 ft long and 75 ft wide with a crew capacity of 29 men a cargo capacity of 25,400 tons (she would carry over 26,000 tons more than her capacity) and a top speed of 14 knots which is 26 km/h or 16 mph. Beginning construction June 7, 1958 the Mighty Fitz was highly adored by people who figured she was so big she couldn’t sink, little did they know that she might have been the biggest ship to float on the Great Lakes but she would also be the biggest ship to sink on the Great Lakes as well…Not even her christening went perfect, When it came time for Elizabeth Fitzgerald (the wife of Edmund Fitzgerald man the ship was named after) to break the champagne bottle on the bow end of the ship it took three tries to break the bottle, that wasn’t all however as the ship was sliding into the water she entered the water at a very dangerous scary looking angle, after self-righting herself she sent a massive wave of water crashing into the opposite dock, people roared and cheered in excitement one man even had a heart attack and died that day. For 17 long years of service the Mighty Fitz carried taconite iron ore from mines near Duluth Minnesota to ironworks in Detroit, Toledo, and other Great Lakes ports setting 6 seasonal haul records, she often broke her own records. The Edmund Fitzgerald was made more well known by Gordon Lightfoot when he made the song called The Sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald. The sad evening the Fitzgerald sank was her last haul of the year before being moored up in a dry dock for the winter to get repairs. The Edmund Fitzgerald along with the Arthur M. Anderson were caught up in a November storm on Lake Superior that night, The Arthur M. Anderson was lucky enough to make it through the storm however the Pride of the American Side was not. The Mighty Fitz made multiple calls to Anderson according to the captain of the Fitzgerald a railing on the spar deck was down, they had lost a few deck covers, and were taking on enough water to make the Might Fitz list. The last transmission to the Anderson that the Fitz made was “We are holding our own, going along like an old shoe” throughout the night the Fitz had multiple issues taking on water like said earlier, loss of deck covers which might be bad, and losing power to things like the radar of the ship which wasn’t an easy fix in the freezing November storm, Captain McSorley of the Fitzgerald contacted Captain Cooper of the Anderson and requested that the Anderson helped them navigate as they lost power to the radar and were driving blind. The Fitzgerald later sank that night taking her entire 29 man crew down with her the exact reason behind why she sank is currently unknown theories range from swamping to capsizing to hitting the seabed and breaking her back splitting in half to hitting the Sixth Fathom Shoal. The last person to see any of the Mighty Fitz’s crew was the wife of one of the crewmen sadly she was trying to see her husband and couldn’t, he as well as the entire crew sadly went down with the ship. I not only did this for fun meaning I had no reason too, I did this in school out of boredom in study hall. Honestly this is for Sarah since she read a history book enjoy a random historical ship event and backstory that I stole from my 134 page slideshow, frankly people I talk to don't roleplay like I do but hey if not for "Sarah" then enjoy the history of the S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald, random RUclipsr I enjoy!
