It sounds so much more beautiful in German and the German lyrics have much more meaning. I grew up in Virginia in the United States, but I a German Friend when they emigrated in the early 1960s. I learned German from his family and he learned English from me as kids do.

As a devout parochial student I knew this history and had to sing it in German, French and English. It is a miraculous song with a humble history.
