Max, Greg and Jules, a lot has changed in eight years, but you still have the most informative, calm and relaxed channel for analog cameras and film. Congratulations and keep up the good work!
Great video thanks! I own an R5 with a couple of lenses, and it ignited my interest in Leica and thus paved the way for my M10. The quality of the photos are quite stunning. I have enjoyed shooting with the R5, and I also agree that it is a beautiful design and great build quality.
This was actually my first Leica camera and I got the Elmarit-R 28/2.8 V1 with it but ended up selling it before I got confident with it (metering was not too accurate and I didnt know how to meter back then). Still very cool to see anyone that would review this cost down version of the R5
appreciate your works, the leica slrs are really beautiful and affordable cameras but sadly they are rarely discussed on the internet.thanks for reviewing them!
Great review, as always. Really knew nothing of that model. However, the R8 and R9 deserve a review. Remarkable cameras, rarely recognized for their technological and ergonomic excellence.
A great review again. For me the R-E it has all the features I need. I have one suggestion: you made a very good review about the Rollei 35 S about six years ago. Could you also do a review on the Minox 35 Gt which was an important competitor to the Rollei in Germany then?
What is balatantly obvious is the undeniable quality of the Leica lenses, as in the final analysis a manual film camera body is nothing but a black box housing the shutter, the metering system and the film transport. Albeit a very well made and beautiful camera body in this case.
Great video! I just added a 35 mm f2.8 Leitz lens to my R4 kit. They are really rugged SLRs with a unique feel in the hand vis a vis their Japanese counterparts of the era.
And another very well made review video by you, as expected 🙂. Thank you very much for your excellent work over all the years! In my childhood exploring photography, and later in my student years at university, the Leica R series has always been very attractive for me, a kind of dream camera and especially dream lenses (despite being a very satiesfied Nikon user). But too expensive for me, I could not afford it at that time. But I always have had an eye on the R-E especially. Later in the first years of the "digital revolution", not being a budget-restricted student anymore, and when the prices on the used market decreased significantly, I seriously considered entering the Leica R system. But at about the same time Nikon introduced the unique and excellent F6, and two years later Zeiss the amazing ZF line of lenses, for Nikon F mount. After a relatively long time of intensively considering all the pros and cons, I decided to not adding another system, but concentrating on my Nikon system in 35mm format, and adding the F6 and also Zeiss ZF (and later the absolutely outstanding Zeiss Milvus) lenses to my already existing Nikon equipment. It was absolutely the right and perfect decision, I have never regretted it. But nevertheless the Leica R system, especially with the later, much improved and really excellent lenses, and the R-E, stayed in my mind. Really excellent gear, definitely! Meanwhile photographer friends of mine are using Leica R cameras and lenses, and they love them. What I can totally understand 🙂. Best regards, Henning
Very good review and also a very good camera too. The RE is an inexpensive option in the R system who provides an gate to the R lenses too. Thanks for sharing and produce videos like this. PS: please make a review of the Leica R8 too
An excellent video showing some love for the R-E. I've had one for maybe a year and as a landscape photographer it has all I need. It's a very nice camera to use, it feels solid and smooth and despite it being a 'budget' camera it's only missing a couple of modes, not a cheaper build. They can be stupidly cheap and they are relatively rare, what's not to like about an R-E? 🙂
Nice camera with the most interesting features of the R5 (1/2000 and flash TTL ) without the unnecessary ones (program and speed priority.). The view finder like all the R4 to 7 cameras is wonderful, and the body I s solid and reliable. The sound of its shutter is a legend very well amortized. So a very pleasant body to use , a little heavy (but less than the R7 if I am right) and which gibpves access to one of the best series of lenses and mainly the 28mm f2.8, 50mm f 2, 60mm macro, 90mmf2 , 135mm f 2.8 and legendary 180mm f3.4. With these 6 primes yo can cover 90% of usual photography subjects if you are not fan of sports or wildlife.
I have a broken one. The winder just gave out. Have had it since the 90s. Finding someone in the US to work on an R-E is impossible. Have an Angulon 21mm f4 left. Sold my tele lenses off. Have a 30 year old Vivitar 500mm mirror with the R-mount adapter but have hardly used it. Bought an R4s used and it broke. Cannot find one now. R6s are coming down in price and am debating buying a body.
Max- excellent video ! tell me what was your impression of Adox CHS II 100? I've shot about 50 rolls and almost always the negatives came out on the thin side and the base curls, despite there being ant anti curling layer, which is not ideal for scanning. I developed them in FX39 which gave good results, sharp and with little grain - but on balance not my favorite film stock.
Thanks for your comment, Jan. To be honest, I don't have as much first-hand experience with the film. In this case we simply sent it to our trusted lab and they took care of developing and scanning it. So I wouldn't be able to tell you whether it was problematic in its handling. The results always struck me as very nice and nuanced though.
I am using ADOX CHS 100 II at an Exposure Index (E.I.) of 50/18°, also developed in ADOX FX-39 II (development time and agitation rhythm adjusted to the exposure). By that I get optimal shadow detail and tonality (optimized characteristic curve / HD-curve). I have optimized my development parameters for classic optical enlargement in my darkroom with a Kaiser System V enlarger.
All the Leica R’s compared to the Leicaflexes do need a lot of shutter pressure to make a photo. Compared to for example the Minolta XD-7 it is a shame. And I do have an R3, R4, R5, R6 and the R8. The Nikon F3 (or any Leica M) is in comparison buttersmooth. That is my only complaint about these camera’s.
Very cheap for what the camera body is. Never realized how good this camera was before seeing the video. Should be a worthwhile consideration as an alternative to for example a Contax for people looking for late 80s/90s manual focus systems.
And for a long time, Leica refuses to recognise the ‘R’ system as far as the Leica user online galleries, etc. The online Leica magazine will not publish any ‘R’ system images. It’s as if the company is trying hard to distance itself from the system.
I reread the R5 manual which says that it can accept ALL flashes. let's have confidence in Leica, I mounted a vintage Metz 34 bct 2 which has a trigger voltage measured at 150 volts. the R5 did not fry and it works perfectly with and without flash after the test. phew!
Made in Germany? Aren’t the R cameras basically Minolta’s up to the R8? Don’t get me wrong, I have several R cameras and all work amazing well. But maybe the branding should say assembled in Germany.
I own a Leica R6.2 (besides a R8) and I like it for its formal design and especially the very nice viewfinder. Unfortunately all Leica R-series camera suffer a lot from their cheap plastic parts which stand in harsh contrast to the self proclaimed claim of the brand.

Thank you. Such a kind comment means the world to me. Really appreciate it.

This was my workhorse-camera back in the days when I was shooting only on film. Very underrated Leica gem - still have it - still love it. :)
Glad to hear that. Thanks for your comment.
My favorite channel about film photography.
Thank you. That’s very kind.

Thank you for the kind feedback. I appreciate this a lot.

Thanks Greg and Max, another camera I didn’t know about but now want 😊
I have the similar R5 (along with an R8) and it is a great camera and excellent value for money today's market. Great video - as always!

Another great video, Max. Impeccably researched as always.
Thank you, I have always liked the R-E. I remember it when it was new and thought it is an intelligently designed camera. I would still like an R-E.
Finally found a R5, with extra modes T and P but i don't use them. Such a joy last WE to take photos with great R lenses

R4 rugged compared to a f3 or f1 what a joke r4s are delicate garage queens

Great shots in this episode!
Thank you. :)
Had an R-E with the 28-70 and really enjoyed it. Should never have sold it. Maybe one day another will come back to me.
Thanks!
Another excellent review! Danke!
Thanks for your kind feedback.
Thamk you, another great review.
Thanks.

Another great v-blog. Another Leica😊
Thanks!
Many of the Leica R series cameras were the result of the Leica/Minolta collaboration and the Minolta XE and XD designs in particular.
Yes, that is true. We even did a video on the topic about five years ago: ruclips.net/video/LzymGU5b2XE/видео.htmlsi=29aDWo7-B-MtmUl5
A delicious vintage camera. Great reliable shooter at a modest cost, but some of the lenses are very pricey.

OMG the garden iron work has a pacifier in Germany. (9:59)
keep going!

i’m sorry that red bag doesn’t match the channel aesthetic , please reshoot with a more appropriate item! 😉
Haha.
I gotta know; what watch is Greg wearing?
This is a Junkers with hand-wound movement. I don't know the exact model.
Hello
Anyone knows if we can use high voltage flashes (up to 250V) on R cameras ? I know M8 can stand these, but what about R5 to R7 series ?
I reread the R5 manual which says that it can accept ALL flashes. let's have confidence in Leica, I mounted a vintage Metz 34 bct 2 which has a trigger voltage measured at 150 volts. the R5 did not fry and it works perfectly with and without flash after the test. phew!

Leica gear is overprice to high heavens. The Leicas R were bought by rich people not by true PROS,
