  • A rare chance to see what it's like inside a running Tiger 1. The clip shows a short test run of Tiger 131 at the Tank Museum in Bovington, England. The 23 litre Maybach engine is now running superbly after a total rebuild by specialists at SdKfz in May 2006.
    Many thanks to the guys at Bovington for permitting the inside of this tank to be filmed and broadcast.

    Wow, thx guys to share that moment, my grandfather was in a tank-divisions in WWII and he sometimes talked about that really powerfull Tiger-Tank. Now i could imagine, what he meant. In fact he was in the panzergrenadierdivision Grossdeutschland. From ´43 Zitadelle at kursk up to the eastern front in 45 at Danzig. But i guess, the Tiger was a frightened thing to every enemy at all... He was just heavy and slow, but armed with such a big gun...

    That's right, we were already out by the time the rain came.
    I think that I was the only one inside that got wet simply because I wouldn't drive with the hatch shut as it'd be completely dark in there. For American Armour day, we got the turret and internal lights working so were able to drive closed down and operate the turret. Quite an experience!
    The early Tiger's were fully submersible with only a crew/engine snorkel pipe visible above the water.

    Even after all these years this is still an impressive machine. Imagine what it was like to be a soviet or alled tanker and encounter one. Of course there were never many. I think that a lot of allied troops thought that the mark 4 was a tiger because they do look alike especially if they scare the crap out of you and are coming towards you firing.

    Driving that tank even in WW2 must of been the best experience ever. You knew no matter what was going on around you, you were safe. Nothing could stop that tank in the early stages of the war, Sherman rounds would literally bounce off like nothing, you almost feel invincible

    • @Panzerkampff

      Mechanical issues, reliability, and fuel were some of its biggest issues with this tank. Nonetheless, when someone brings up the problems this beast has, you should know that every WWII machine had issues, even the Shermans. Still, this tank is so goated

He was a panzer ace in the whermacht who actually destoyed more tanks than Wittman (believed to be as high as 195 tanks destroyed) though he was never awarded the knights cross because of several incidents including assaulting an Einsatzgruppen officer whom he saw mistreating Soviet POWs.

    • @ValentineC137
      @ValentineC137 7 лет назад +3

      if i remember correctly, then the wide tracks of the Tiger (and tiger II even.. the maus as well) meant that they had more evenly spread out pressure to the ground, the ground pressure of the Tiger, Tiger II and Maus were all lower than that of a sherman.
      so in theory the big german cats and Maus would all be able to traverse soft ground were a sherman would get stuck.
      belive the americans once got flanked from a route belive to be in-accesable by german tanks because the ground was too soft for thier shermans.

  • @LastAvailableAlias
    @LastAvailableAlias 10 лет назад +9

    I guess a Tiger Tank automatically gets to turn first at intersections.
    It is a little roomier in the driver's compartment than I expected. I wonder what they do for things like replacing tracks. You can't exactly order them online I'd assume.
    I never understood why the tank designers made the sides at right angles either. You'd think they'd slope the armor a least a little.

    • @lovelyfloorcoverings
      @lovelyfloorcoverings 10 лет назад +2

      It was designed before they realised of the advantages of sloped armour

    • @WheelsRCool
      @WheelsRCool 10 лет назад

      Blown Fox Not saying you are wrong as I am no expert on the issue, but the Soviet T-34 had sloped armor and that came before the Tiger tank didn't it?

    • @lovelyfloorcoverings
      @lovelyfloorcoverings 10 лет назад

      Correct, the russians discovered the advantages of sloped armour before anyone else

    • @WheelsRCool
      @WheelsRCool 10 лет назад +1

      The Germans were really stunned when they came up against the T-34s when they first invaded Russia. They had thought that the Russians would be incredibly backwards in terms of such things. Particularly ironic was that the Russians generally were far more poorly trained than the Germans, yet had the better tank for some time.

    • @ultramarine218
      @ultramarine218 10 лет назад

      Federico Longoni Actually no. Sloping armor allows for a smaller amount of material with greater potential for protection. The Panther's front armor was 80mm thick, but due to the slope it was something more like 120-130mm effectively. It's sides were 40mm, but due to the sloping, it was something more equivalent to 80-100mm.
      That's why, despite the fact that the Panther is actually a larger tank than the Tiger (yes. It actually is.), it weighed 20 tons less.
