I’ve subscribed as Epic Light Media asked, I already checked all the video, it’s an amazing channel! Thank you! P.S. I’m still subscribed to Epic Light Media too 😄
I am so happy that the algorithm recommended me this channel. This is by far the best that I ever found! The way you explain things and how professional you are is really inspiring. Thank you very much!
Loving your videos. As a film photographer it’s super interesting to see the similarities and differences when shooting film video with a digital workflow. Can’t wait to see more!
Thanks to epic light media for shouting your great channel out!! Excited for what's to come (Dumb) question: do you grade yout 16mm footage? what stocks do you usually use? what are your thoughts on filmconvert nitrate with all the film emulations?
Theres no dumb questions! Yeah i grade the film, I have another video on my channel called "how to shoot 16mm film" talking a little bit about that, ill get into that more in the future. I usually use 250D or 500T I have some of those plug ins, I dont find myself using them much, some times ill try them on to give me some ideas of were I could take the grade, but I usually always do it myself from scratch
ive found that shooting analog film involves a cost. I dont mean financially only. We all know that limitations create value. We have hit the age that film is shot recklessly and cheaply. weve become the ultimate disposable society. I remember the days of taking a photo and nobody ran to the camera to see what the picture looks like. I remember shooting on my bolex in the early 80s and carefully planning. I didnt just shoot everything and hope in the editing I could find something worth while. people talk about the "magic of film" in respect to the look. and yes, its there for sure. but as you mentioned, its all in the process of shooting. Theres something special about stripping down the excess and actually participating through the lens with the life before it. we seem to become a part of what we capture, like we had a say in it. its personal.
This is one of the best videos on the Bolex I have seen. I'm thinking of doing a video on my Bell & Howell Filmo 70 models, as well as home-developing the films
Wow, the mechanical ones are really cool, capturing video with a purely mechanical chemical process. Beautifully developed shots too. I would love to see your scanning process for these too.
Hey! I have another video on my channel called "how to shoot 16mm film" talking a little bit about the process with the scans and grading. I dont do the scanning myself I get them scanned in through a company
Oooo I used the Bolex H16 in film school a few years ago. Really cool camera. We didn't have the Super16 modification. Tried it on my Zhiyun Crane 2 but it was too heavy for that setup
I rented and used an Arri SR1 and 2. Also used a Beaulieu R16. Eventually I bought a Frezzolini LW-16 with 12-120 Angenieux zoom lens and 2 400' magazines for $1200 back in 1996 (which was pretty cheap for a 16mm camera set like that back then). It's basically like a CP-16 newscamera (same movement). Still have it. The zoom lens was one of those 'dogfinder' types and the magazines were those Mickey Mouse ear types. You had to screw off the lids. Sometimes they'd get stuck. I remember spending a half hour trying to get the film out of one of them. You have to turn it just right. Still love and prefer film.
Absolutely agree with the idea of embracing imperfections! It all comes down to personal preferences...I guess. Loving the content on your channel I sometimes come back and rewatch a video or two. Thanks for sharing useful info in each videos of yours! Full support
I believe the restrictions on shooting film force a necessary workflow habit of preproduction before and while shooting that should be carried over to shooting digital. I've spent 28 years on various productions and it's astonishing how unprepared and haphazard many directors and DP's are. But on sets that are run tightly it's a delightful flow of creation (still hard work but enjoyable).
I've been shooting with and repairing Canon Scoopics, pretty heavy and the lens being attached can be somewhat limiting but they have great light meters and solid electronics. Love to see people shooting 16mm and can't wait to get my hands on a Bolex to take apart.
Dude, your footage looks so cool! I want to hire you as DP for my next project. You are so inspirational and your lighting techniques and tips in the other video are top-notch.
How do you pull the focus on this? And also, can you upload a video on how to properly expose using the lightmeter? I love your content and its easy to learn something new when it comes from you. I haven't seen any proper video on how to expose for a scene using a lightmeter.
dude you make great videos, and your film work looks awesome, as someone whos shot quite a bit on an old k3. Wish you had more videos! Hope you have some more stuff coming!
so beautiful!! haven't shot films on film, but predominately do with my photography. Would love to give 16mm a go, thanks for sharing & tips. p.s. sorry for the spam, just binged all ya videos!
Thanks Lewis, a really interesting video. The sharpness and color of this 16mm film are excellent... A question, especially regarding the Super16 shots taken with the Bolex H16EL: I was struck by the great stability of the images: was this footage digitally stabilized?
I can no longer find that video where your talk about your Ultra 16 Boulez that has its gate machines out even wider than 1:85 aspect ratio. So I’m presume around 2:00 To 1. As a long time Bolex 16 owner. My last purchase was a EL Super 16 direct from Bolex factory. I need to have some make me an external power supply like yours. I’d also love to buy a SBM Bolex and add a Tobin electric motor as my favorite filming speed is 30 FPS even though I’m based in Australia. I’d also like to have that at Ultra 16 with a wider aspect like yours.
Thanks for the great videos! I have a H16 EL and want to connect a v-mount battery. Maybe this is a realy stupid question, bu is it possible to use a normal 4 pin xlr to power the camera? And do you have to watch the voltage? The manual says 16,5V is the max, while fully charged v-mount battery can output 16.8V...
This channel is blowing up!! I keep checking the sub count every hour or so haha. I’m more interested in this channel than anything else right now.
Thanks to you!! hah
@@lewispotts no this is all you I’m just a fan

Wow way to make Epic Light on this Media!
Listening to Lewis and watching the way he handles with the cameras reminds of Roger Deakin’s vibe. Anyone?

2:31 Lot of memories loading this camera. Good old 7293 film. Those were the days. You had to think before you shot anything.
Simply amazing. Love the gloomy look you can get with 16mm
Your channel is my new favorite man. Big fan, learning lots. Thanks for all your knowledge!

Thanks man:)
the water tank Bolex really is also perfect for shooting in sandy areas where you absolutely don't want any sand getting into the camera.
You're an Inspiration, everything about this channel is amazing, I'm hoping one day I can get my hands on a 16mm camera. Take Care
What Lens are you using with the Bolex H16 EL? Loved the video!

I’ve always wondered if the Kllo music video was film or digital. Now I love it even more! That under water housing is INSANE
Epic Light Media told me to subscribe. I did.. I now expect Lynn to boost up the channel. :-)
I've been shooting with and repairing Canon Scoopics, pretty heavy and the lens being attached can be somewhat limiting but they have great light meters and solid electronics. Love to see people shooting 16mm and can't wait to get my hands on a Bolex to take apart.
Love the look/design of them! Ive never used one myself
haha,... i built myself exactly the same power supply as you did for my Bolex :-D
the quality of your videos is amazing!
Love the content and quality of your videos, can't wait for what's coming next!
iPhone hack is brilliant. I have a friend with different housing for the H16, looks like a die cast diving bell / submarine.
Really appreciate this content 👏 👏 . Wish to see more break downs of the lenses choices and films choices in near future .
love it
Beautiful! Will definitely have to work with you when I go to Australia for a music video shoot next year.
Thanks for sharing, epic light media😜

Nice work! I was not expecting to see a film camera of that size on a ronin-s.

Film have instant high budget holywood quality.Digital is for Netflix and indie type or vlogging
This was great!
This is all so cool... if film wasn't so bad for the environment, I'd be a fanboy (I mean I'd like to try it a couple o times )
Epic light media sent me to screw with your algorithms or something along those lines
please!!! keep this content going!!!!
