    It may be late in 2023 but there's still interest in sfb. Thanks for making some great content. RUclips needs more sfb videos out in the wild.

    I've been collecting and reading SFB books for a couple years, but haven't had the opportunity to play. Thanks for producing these videos. Its been great to see the mechanics in action.

      Pete Mackay Check out the cadet module on Vassalengine.com (rapidly being updated as we speak) and sfbonline.com for actually playing if you have no local opponents willing.

    Excellent teaching video, even if you should have gone after the paralleling drone last.

    At the top of the turn, didn't you have to move once first before shooting again as everything is going 8?

    • @spammeaccount
      @spammeaccount  8 лет назад +1

      +baktru When doing vids I'm actually concentrating on ten other things so occasionally I make a mistake (especially in this early vid before I found vassanengine.org and made the sfb cadet module for it). Yes if movement is called on to happen on an impulse that movement happens first. In full scale SFB on impulse one only speed 32 moves and that is only seeking weapons as ships are limited to speed 31, so I mentally flubbed on the speed 8 everything moves. So it would be a range 4 shot not range 3 at that drone that rolled a six and would be 2 damage not 3 and a range 5 at the damaged drone, but R5 is still a guaranteed kill.
      In this vid I'm using several cobbled together programs. The counters are using a program that is to simply display a desktop sticker not move things about onscreen. The map is actually being done by wallpaper. This vid ruclips.net/video/bGNOzbcVgTk/видео.html using the vassal game engine with the module I made was easier to do.

    • @baktru
      @baktru 8 лет назад

      Yeah I guessed that is what happens. I remember on impulse 1 usually only Plasma and fast dropnes can move. And the cobbled together programs did look like a pain. I'll check out Vassal SFB Cadet Module though. I know Vassal was definitely great for ASL as well.

    Are you using Linux? I do as well - Ubuntu 16.10 with Cinnamon desktop. How did you achieve having everything on screen? Map, counters, etc.? What pgm are you using for that? Can you markup the SSDs on-screen as well?

    • @spammeaccount
      @spammeaccount  7 лет назад

      Mint XFCE, Here I made the map a background image, and used a program called screenlets to do on screen images. I hacked the "stickers" that came with it and input the images I wanted. The SSD was done in Pinta. I have since moved onto using Vassalengine.org and made a module vassalengine.org/wiki/Module:Star_Fleet_Battles_Cadet_Training_Manual and now use that.

      Since my original post I've discovered the Vassal module. I played SFB back in the late 80s/early 90s and then stopped (my last purchase was the Commander's Edition), but I'm kind of getting back into it. Considering it, anyway. :) As for Linux, I have been planning on converting to Mint when I get a new laptop - to do so now would mean losing a lot of stuff that I don't have the space to backup - so as a stopgap measure I've converted to the Cinnamon desktop since I couldn't stand Unity. Now, however, I understand that Ubuntu is returning to its Gnome roots as of v.18.04, so maybe I'll just stick with it. You couldn't get me to switch from Linux if you paid me - when I use my gf's laptop (Windows) I'm appalled at how slooooow it is. I'm amazed that people accept that level of performance as "normal" for a PC, and think the only alternative is an overpriced Apple product.

      Two quick questions re: the Vassal mod, which I've been experimenting with recently. First, is there a keystroke to switch races during a game, or must that always be done via the menu? Second, I noticed that the speed caller and the SOP caller are now separate. Is that a "hard-wired" setting or is there a way to have them combined as in the video?

      +Christopher Nuzzi "" losing a lot of stuff that I don't have the space to backup"" Um get a USB Drive 3 TB for a $100 is CHEAP www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product/seagate-seagate-backup-plus-hub-3tb-3-5-usb-3-0-external-desktop-hard-drive-stfm3000100-stfm3000100/10453009.aspx? +Christopher Nuzzi """ is there a keystroke to switch races during a game""" Button labeled "player/SSD Area" It's where to change sides and open that sides private window to place things like SSDS instead of having them on the map. Here is a tedious video going through all the module options ruclips.net/video/v6Tb4gN8cY4/видео.html """ SOP caller are now separate""" there are 3 ways to do SOP and speed calls, the original implementation was a bit rough as it woul'd let you skip steps you didn't need. It's easier to answer questions here facebook.com/groups/707030712766345/ as I can stick in pictures....
