Love to see someone doing videos for the classic Star Fleet Battles! This is my "lifestyle" game, that I played for decades!

Since 1979 I was addicted to SFB for decades. Back in the early 90s I won a complete (at the time) "Doomsday" set of every module and other stuff at a convention. For some weird reason, I STILL have a huge locker full of about 100 lbs of collected SFB stuff...
Unfortunately it's almost impossible to find anyone else anywhere near as rabid as I was who wants to play anymore...
I think the major mistake that was made in the Captains Version was essentially making EVERY race pretty much exactly the same. They removed pretty much all the differences that made the game enjoyable and turned it into a "Rules Lawyer" contest. He who could remember the Rules would win any argument.

2:29 This is one big reason why I bought the R modules, the counters cames in really handy, actually for all the playing I did, I want to say essential.

Wow! Your video is so helpful. I haven’t bought anything yet because it was so confusing. I finally settled on the cadet training manual and the captain’s basic set, but then the whole punched or I punched and bound or loose. After watching this and your other video on basic set box. I know what I want.

Will you be touching on Federation Commander (comparison or pros and cons) or will that be outside the scope of your review of SFB? Assuming you are familiar with FC that is :)

Got a video on FC coming tomorrow! It's not so much a direct comparison with SFB, though I can talk more about that in future videos.

@@djthorsilver Excellent! I'm tempted to try (as in, I will try) Federation Commander, so I was wondering how much of the SFB feel will be missing. I'm trying to judge which of the two I would prefer, at the moment I'm leaning towards FC so it would be nice to get an additional viewpoint of an experienced player of the system.

@@yotelex Cool! I'll try to offer what guidance I can :) Ultimately FC stands perfectly well on its own as a deep tactical starship combat game. SFB adds a lot more detail, which in turn adds to your tactical options, but I think which system works better for you will depend on what you find most rewarding about games like this. Flying ships is harder in SFB, and you have less overall power and speed available because you have to worry about stuff like life support, etc., so if that kind of added challenge sounds good to you then SFB might be up your alley.
Maybe what I'll do is a direct comparison between the games with a bit of discussion about the rules from SFB I've added into FC. That would give my perspective on the elements I miss from SFB in FC. I do talk a bit in the FC video about some simplifications that don't quite work 100% for me, so you'll get a little bit of that point of view there :)

Bought all the R-modules. I didn't play ten percent of them.

Same here, honestly. But I"m a strange person who enjoys just looking at SSDs and imagining how I would play them (or against them), so I've got my money's worth out of them nonetheless :)

@@djthorsilver You're in good company, because even though I got to use small sections of all of the R-Modules, there was no way in hell that I would be able to play with all that material. A lot of, to me at least, was "filler" or just straight marketing to people who would buy anything SFB.
I do with I could play again in some respects, but there are other games I'd rather play than SFB. Much of that comes from some negative interaction with the game's author, but most of it comes from just not being able to game like I wanted to when stuff was in their hay day back in the 80s and 90s.
But yeah, gawking at the SSDs, and sometimes reading the flavor fiction was a real thrill.

I'm the same, I bought so many of those modules, but didn't play them because I like the SSDs.
