These are so interesting to watch! Who typically does the initial concept sketch? Do you take the hands-on approach or do you have designers working under your supervision?
I didn't like the look of it that much when it was released in 2008, but it has grown on me. I think the Abarth version looks pretty good by modern standards. Especially as lot of cars have been getting uglier.
So many legendary cars designed by you Frank. As someone that has been obsessed with cars and their designs since I was very young, I really enjoy your videos. Thanks for sharing 👍
Just when you've nearly lost hope in the magic of the internet, along comes a channel like this where you get a master of his craft giving you a one on one walkthrough of his thought process. Priceless.

Hey Frank, I've had my Abarth 500 for almost 5 months now and every time I look at it I find something more about the design that I love! People always are surprised that it's a 2013, they think that I bought it new! That's how you know it's a gorgeous, timeless design. It really is a fantastic little car. Keep up the great work!

It's wonderful to see this Mr. Frank, thanks for showing your knowledge and talent with us. It would be very interesting to have a similar video on the Bravo. ¡Saludos desde Argentina!
Such a beautiful little car. I have been watching a few of your videos now and I love to watch them. On top of that you seem to be a very nice and genuine person Frank.
This has been an education, you can see clearly that inspiration shines through with the Fiat 500. Being more acquainted with Chip Fooses' sketching in his Hagerty spots, it's also interesting to get to see the difference in the working spaces for both of these automotive designers.
Hello Frank, I met you last year al the Eagle 25 year celebration. I was one of the Argentinians that had the pleasure to meet you outside before you gave that amazing presentation. It was a incredible to meet you, hope you are doing well and I look forward on flowing your channel!!!
This cute little car has been a favorite of mine for such a long time. I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for making such a beautiful thing a reality.
I hope you will read this. I generally don't like cars from the 21st century, but when I saw a 2007 Fiat 500 in the parking lot I fell down impressed. In 2009 I bought an Abarth 500, 3 years later I had an accident and... I bought another one just like it. I still have it to this day. Technically it was all tuned and improved, but visually it did not change, inside and out (of course it is iconic white with red side stripes and mirrors, the only thing I changed was to add on a white scorpion). Thank you! This car is beautiful outside and inside. And very thoughtful, I am 190 cm and the car is very comfortable. The emergency lamp button is a work of art! It is so nice and friendly that you want to admire and eat it at the same time! Very fitting for a cheerful Fiat. Very rarely the car looks is at the same time cheerful and sublimely beautiful. The 500 is probably also the first case in which I like the new version much more than the original. Thank you very, very much!
As an owner of an Abarth, if the car were not so cute, it would be completely obnoxious. What he says about italian designs is correct though, Even mundane Italian cars feel special. I have owned many of the original 124 Spider and a couple of Lancias over the years, wonderful cars that while maybe not the most ergonomic or easiest to work on, still managed to feel and look much more expensive than they really were. Thank you for the video!
Got my daughter a 500 Abarth Cabrio as her first car. She LOVES it, though after a year of ownership I am finding that build quality is pretty terrible. Just had to replace the clutch/brake pedal assembly because it's cable linkage was literally plastic and BROKE after 50k miles.
@@Im_The_Slep I got myself a golf 5 now for 2k. Insurance is really expensive with these classic beginner cars here in Germany. Also you can only ride 125ccm motorcycles when youre 16 and drive cars when you're 18 here unfortunately
Reinterpretar las líneas de míticos autos debe ser complejo. Lo admiro por cuanto yo nunca lo hice. Debe ser una buena práctica de "creatividad controlada". Cómo siempre Curro ¡¡ chapeau !!
As a Fiat 500 driver who has a first job as a graphic designer and a second job as a pet sitter, watching you draw the car you designed and saying you made it to look like a puppy makes me so incredibly happy, you can't even imagine 🥲
I had a 74 Fiat 500 when I was stationed in Italy. What fun, every traffic light was the start of a Grand Prix. Loved it so much. Sadly it was stolen. I have a 500 Abarth now. I wish it looked more like your drawing.
Love the look of my 500 Abarth. Five years and 80,000 miles since I bought it, I still hear "What is it?" or "How much did it cost?" every week. The perfect utilitarian vehicle, with a timeless style and distinctive character.
Watching these to help with my designs in Automation: The car company tycoon game. They help a lot and are easy to understand for someone like me who isn't very versed in the design side of things!
As a car enthusiast there are some cars that leave me in awe when seeing them on the road. But none make me feel as happy as when I see a Fiat 500. It's an amazing blend of retro and the modern, with so much new character! Tired of all the angry-looking cars we see these days.. I'd rather a car brighten my day than make me intimidated :)
Nicholas Picorelli it’s true like mercedes just thin the headlights for an aggressive look when updating but happy cars are nice haha minis even try and make them more aggressive with spoilers and everything, fiat 500 and the VW Up! I like
When I was a kid, (late 90’s/early 2000’s) I had model versions of the F430 & BMW X5, along with a few others. Had no idea they were designed by the same person. Amazing!
Love these videos of you explaining your designs Frank! In my opinion you did a much better job of doing a modern 500 than the BMW Mini (mostly because of the size)
I don't really like the look of the 500, but I think it's a brilliant retro of an iconic design. Looks and functions much better than the original. Very well done!
So many sailboats I love were designed by Dieter Empacher. You can just tell it's his design, and it's so interesting the same is true of your cars. There's a rightness to them. Thanks so much for making these videos. I've only just discovered them and, as someone who has drawn cars since I was 10, your videos explain what I've never been able to articulate between my good drawings and, let's just say, the less successful ones.
Hi Frank. Another great video. It would be great if you could also explain if Fiat approached you, how long did it take to design the car, If it had different iterations, the clay model etc. The videos are getting better. Keep up the good work.

As a kid, I was dreaming about becoming a car designer. Growing up in Yugoslavia, my dad drove a 1986 Zastava 750 (licensed copy of Fiat 600) and I was trying to design a modern version of it... Basically, it looked pretty much exactly like the new Fiat 500. :D I still have the drawing somewhere, I need to dig it up somehow...
thank you for the video! when i saw the first 500's back in the day i've kinda hated it, but after all those years i want it quite badly. I don't know any car that looks so good after 15 years. huge respect for you :)
Ruben Wainberg was the man behind the Abarth 500. Roberto Giolitto was the man behind the Fiat 500 design of this generation, previewed by the Trepiuno of 2004.
i can't believe you are in here and teach some fundamentals of your design. I'm always facinating your approach to biomimicry design. Thanks youtube algoritm bring me here :D
I saw a video recently that questioned the 500’s placement of the alternator. This leads to a repair nightmare for anyone working on the car themselves. Your talent is unquestionable tho
Always liked this design, looks fresh and timeless even now and like the original mini, surprisingly roomy inside. Often thought that an estate variant would be great, increase practicality, move the back window further from passengers heads and be useful for dog owners, whose pets could get in and out without suffering musculoskeletal injuries like with ugly high suvs. Fiat made a s imiliar attractive variant of the original 500 back in the 60s /70s, can't recall the name but looked great and versatile.
Amazing video and channel. It's so awesome to see how you approach desiging different cars. But at the same time it feels a bit bitter to me, as couple of years ago i wanted to pursue career in automotive design, but was discouraged by people in my surrounding.
He is taking credit for the design which was nearly finished. I respect Frank but saying he "designed" the 500 is a lie, he just adapted the existing design for production.
@@TibzzTube totally agree: he's a great designer and he has proved it in the past but, in this case, he just finished the design and gave it the final details
Would like to see Franks answer to this. What were the roles of both Roberto and Frank? And what design work was needed to translate the Trepiuno concept study into the 500 production car?
The predictability/unpredictability of lines makes sense. As an example, if you look at a Nissan Micra K12, it looks a bit like a fiat 500, but every line is predictable. Makes it very dull and heavy to look at, even when very similar.
Omg you’ve designed like every car 😭😭 tbh now I’m thinking about it, I wonder what you would do if you designed the Ford fiesta! Maybe a video idea!! Or reimagining a car etc! Love your content bro
My only big complaint about the 500 is the blind spots. It terrifies me every time I need to change lanes! Aside from that, my Abarth 500 is a blast to drive on windy country roads! First car I've ever purchased (at 55 years old!), and it was worth every penny!
Wow, I didn't realise that Frank has designed so many revolutionary looking cars, escort cozzy, Ferrari 430, bmw mini and this the fiat 500. I'm sure that there are more.

HI Frank,
The word you're probably looking for to describe cuteness is "neoteny".
It looks like an uno fiat
One of the most beautiful "city" car ever designed
Disagree, but it’s up there!
It looks like a cute little bug that's happy to roll around :v
Design by Italian Roberto Giolito
The Fiat 500 from 2007 still looks like it was designed in 2020, it's crazy..
Timeless design!
That's how good design works. I reckon the same may be said about the alfa giulia when it's a decade old
Brad_0 the giulia already looks a bit dated compared to its competitors 🤨
I own a 2008 it looks new and people actually think it is new.
I think another timeless design is the Alfa Romeo 159
Hands down the best production retro car ever produced. Hasn’t aged at all.
the mini cooper has aged amazingly too, probably because it's been designed by him too 😆 he is indeed an amazing designer

I would expect at least a honourable mention of Roberto Giollito and the Fiat Trepiuno concept car which served as the base for the 500.
Not just a base, it was pretty much a complete design which he just adapted. It isn't easy work but saying he designed the 500 is a lie.
I agree, it’s hard to see how Frank “designed” car when you see the concept
F430 project was done by Pininfarina , R50 Mini Geoff Upex
You're right. It seems really odd to me that he calls this car his design when there was people involved who had a bigger part in the process. Same with some other designs. Pretty selfish and unprofessional in my opinion.
I kept watching to see when he would mention Roberto Giollito and the Trepiuno but he didn't. Very strange and quite annoyed tbh

Fiat 500's are happy babies with pure charisma
Truly a design hallmark of the 2000s.
As others have said: huge respect!
I love how you just a simple pen, showing that you don't need something fancy to draw beautiful things.
The car is sooo nice. It keeps the best from the original one and improves the design with a fresh and modern touch. Love it.
Excellent videos! Great discussion of the anthropomorphism in the “face” of the car. I’d love to see a whole video on analysing car expressions.

thank you for the video! when i saw the first 500's back in the day i've kinda hated it, but after all those years i want it quite badly. I don't know any car that looks so good after 15 years. huge respect for you :)
Im in love with the intro music!
My favourite car design of all time!
These are great, I hope you keep making them
Wow, it is fantastic, i love design and I just saw this video on my home page...I love it
Hi Frank, did you also design the Abarth’s of this 500 generation?
Ruben Wainberg was the man behind the Abarth 500. Roberto Giolitto was the man behind the Fiat 500 design of this generation, previewed by the Trepiuno of 2004.
Frank didn't design the 500
i can't believe you are in here and teach some fundamentals of your design. I'm always facinating your approach to biomimicry design. Thanks youtube algoritm bring me here :D

A classic timeless materpiece, well done FIAT!
Well done FRANK
Well done Roberto Giolito!!
You are a legend.. your channel is going to blow up
living legend. Hope you stay healthy and safe
Your works have been really admirable. I wish that we could have your positive design essence also in upcoming cars.
Can´t wait for the P1 and MC12 episodes
MC12 coming this week and the P1 on the 29th July, followed by a live questions and answer session.
I liked the Panda as well which this car was based on, wasn’t as retro stylised as the 500 but still great design
Amazing video and channel. It's so awesome to see how you approach desiging different cars. But at the same time it feels a bit bitter to me, as couple of years ago i wanted to pursue career in automotive design, but was discouraged by people in my surrounding.
Hi Frank! Some videos on how to get better at sketching would be greatly appreciated!
Noted!
You sir are the Bob Ross of the car design.
Excellent job! Where would Fiat be now without it.
You do realise that 95% of the design was already there in the 2004 Fiat Trepiùno Concept?
Designed by Roberto Giolito!
@@deanosaur808 Ah yes, forgot about the Trepiùno kudos to Roberto!
Proud owner of a 2015 500C, it truly makes me happy to drive it. I named it Francesco. 😎
💥👍
What about the trèpiuno concept from Roberto Giolito?
He is taking credit for the design which was nearly finished. I respect Frank but saying he "designed" the 500 is a lie, he just adapted the existing design for production.
@@TibzzTube totally agree: he's a great designer and he has proved it in the past but, in this case, he just finished the design and gave it the final details
Would like to see Franks answer to this. What were the roles of both Roberto and Frank? And what design work was needed to translate the Trepiuno concept study into the 500 production car?
Wether it is the normal model, the X or the Abarth ones, it has those looks that makes me want to buy one!
Great Design, timeless!
The predictability/unpredictability of lines makes sense. As an example, if you look at a Nissan Micra K12, it looks a bit like a fiat 500, but every line is predictable. Makes it very dull and heavy to look at, even when very similar.
I rarely comment, but just want to tel you that I love all your videos
Thank you m! 👍
abarth owner hereto thank you for the incredible design
Great channel! And what an unsung hero to design the bic pen is???
The first side sketch makes me think Nissan Be-1
At 2.48, couldn't help but think 1st generation Ford Ka
And the bottom sketch looks looks like a first gen Dodge Neon
also vw lupo
Omg you’ve designed like every car 😭😭 tbh now I’m thinking about it, I wonder what you would do if you designed the Ford fiesta! Maybe a video idea!! Or reimagining a car etc! Love your content bro
Thanks man!
Alan Jackson Mclaren P1 🤤
True hero in cardesign you are
