Is it worth buying a cheap 200k mile suv? 2000 Ford expedition walk around

  • So here is my new to me 2000 Ford expedition. I purchase this to be my new family hauler for at least the summer and hopefully many years to come. This one was cheap at only $1300, but comes with over 200k miles on the clock. The question is, should you buy an old truck or SUV with high miles, or is it a waste of money? Ultimately, I believe a well taken care of vehicle can last forever, and if you pick one that was popular with lots of aftermarket support, it can even be cheaper than any other form of transportation.
The great thing about Ford expedition's is they share a platform and engine/trans, with many vehicles out there and parts can be found cheap and easily. Let me know what you think about my choice and if you would consider a similar vehicle.

I gotta 2000 Ford Expedition XLT with a 4.6 Triton V8 engine. My family has had it for around 19 years and the only major problem has been the transmission breaking but getting it replaced was well worth. Runs great and wouldn’t sell it for the world.

Well in the 10 months since I posted this comment the engine started ticking. Probably happened around a month ago, it’s lifters. Put some thicker oil and Lucas oil engine stabilizer in. Just gonna baby it as much as possible till the engine goes. Though if it does go we’ll probably get a new engine with the amount of money we’ve put into it

I bought a 2001 Eddie Bauer 3 years ago 114k miles. Fantastic vehicle. 3 things that go wrong. Fuel pump in tank will go out especially if you let gas get too low as fuel cools the pump. Heater core some leak, have to pull dash back for replacement. Spark plugs some times back out with the coil. Older ones had only a few threads and could strip out. I prefer this first gen Expeditions as I like the rear solid axle. I highly recommend the Expedition.

I had to replace the heater cores (my own fault due to neglect). I wouldn't hesitate to take it anywhere. That middle piece up top is your 2000's navigation tool. It tells the inside and outside temp, shows which direction you're facing N,S,E,W-NW,SE, and I believe shows your current elevation. I own a 1998 Expedition I've owned for almost 5 yrs, I only paid $1000 for it and the only issues I had ( besides gas ) was I replaces the braking system ( rotors and pads ) replaced the a/c compressor, purchased 4 new tires, and basic maintenance.. But that was all thru a period of time and it still runs very well, just guzzles gas like a pure alcoholic lol.

Love my 1999 expedition. 163k miles. it has run into some problems but I'm planning on fixing the interior problems like broke door lock and coolant flush myself, but leave steering and suspension problems to the mechanic.
love the 8 seats. ive had a lot of fun and good memories carpooling with my friends to color guard competitions in my last year of high school. but since then, i haven't used as much. i think I'm going to remove the read seats just to save on weight.
mpg does suck obv, but I'm pretty light on the accel and i usually bike to places within 3 miles so it's not a big deal.
biggest problem so far is that the sunroof is stuck open so I'm about to remove the roof liner and fix it myself

The thing in the front that you asked about is like a digital compass, and it tells you how many miles worth of gas ⛽ you have. Example, 103 miles to E.
I have an '02, and I LOVE IT!
Of course just be prepared to change out the HARD TO REACH spark plugs & coil packs every now & then. 😩
Also Idk why, but the window motors are known for going out. 😒

Up until 2005 they also built one on the F250 chassis. If you are looking to buy new used, look for a 2011 Why? No recalls. Mine is a 2002 and have kinda converted it to a camping rig. Rear seats come out easily, (I might be willing to sell them.) I have a car fridge and a microwave. Havent decided about the microwave. Have a 2000kw inverter that I made a place for under the central console
one thing I don't like is there no way to open the back from inside; good and bad, If you are camping in it ya gotta get in and out the passenger doors. But if you are hauling little ones, that is another subject..
I take mine off road and no problem.

This SUV was a big seller and has plenty of repalcement parts in the used car yards. Stay away from air suspension. They are usually toast after 10-15 years. You could probably find spring suspensions in the junkyard if you are a DIY guy and replace them for $400 bucks and your labor. If you find one that has been owned by the same person for 15 years or more ,he should be able to tell what has been replaced. Climate control can go bad but there is a seal repair kit you can buy online and repair. Expect to replace things like fuel pump, water pump, alternator power steering pump. Knowing the transmission has been rebuilt is a big plus. Working AC is unlikely but you might get lucky if the owner took excellent care of it. The engine will last forever if you replace the oil at least every 5K miles. I knew a guy who had a Ford pickup who replaced oil meticulously and put 1000k miles a week to and from work. He had 600K miles it last time i saw him when he retired. There have been three of these in my family in the last ten years.
