- There are two clips here from previous shoots. I think that the information is useful but couldn't fit them in there original videos as they were getting too long. In this video, I give some tips on composition. Let me know what you think in the comments below.

It’s a big help with your detail set up composition. Such as the not framing all of the trunk of a large tree to give the imagination a chance to decide its size. You explained your thought process better than so many others!

I live in a forest, yet I rarely have trees as the main subject in my photos. I'm always trying to see around trees, as if they are in the way of what I'm shooting, like a distant mountain peak. I often use trees as a frame, and I often debate whether I should include the whole tree or part of the tree. Seeing your forest compositions has given me new eyes to see the forest in a new way. I feel like I'm seeing compositions now where I didn't previously notice them. Thanks for the forest inspiration, Adam!

Although you posted this video months ago, I only just now found and viewed it. I find all your videos to be educational as well as entertaining. This one is no exception. It's -21 F as I type this, so not likely to get outside for any photos in the near future, but I think I can see how to use your foreground tips from this video in my local (and very snow-covered) woodlands.
Every now and then, I watch a video about composition and something deep inside about the vision and creative process of an image just makes perfect sense.
This is one of those videos.

It was great to see the comparison of the whole foreground tree and the partial tree. The partial tree was much less of an attention grab and kept the focus in the centre of the frame with the curving trees. Such a lovely image! Enjoy your time in the Rockies!
Hey Adam,
after watching this last week I wanted to come back and say, I've been applying your tips from this video (with a Nikon 20mm f1.8G), and the slight change has helped setting up my compositions "trezmendously!" (thank Gavin for that, lol) I found I wasn't emphasizing my foreground enough, or at all in some shots :) I was using it like a gun scope, aiming too straight, now I see my better images are looking down, more than "straight out", lol.
P.S. Living here in Newfoundland, that's one thing I don't miss about the mainland, no skunks! lol...no snakes or porcupines either, and probably some other common animals I'm missing...but there are a lot of moose!
If you ever get a chance to come to Newfoundland, be sure to see Codroy Valley, it's one of the most scenic parts of Newfoundland, and of course, Gros Morne National Park (UNESCO World Heritage Site) the west coast has the best scenery (IMO). Not much for landscape scenery where I live, I'm on the North East coast, Bonavista North, better known as Ice Berg Alley, I do get to see ice bergs in spring, so I'm not complaining....much :)

Many thanks Adam, I liked the different perspectives around the tree in the foreground. I preferred the second, really emphases the foreground tree’s size.

Adam, nice inclusion of sound of falls and birds in forest in your opening video. Great job! My drone days are over for a little while. Just made a zig where I should have zagged and, yep, the dji refresh has now paid for itself. Always enjoy your instruction and seeing what can be done.
Did DJI honour the program? Just curious as I have the same thing. Do I see a Mavic 2 in your future lol
Was waiting for confirmation from DJI before I replied back. DJI did honor. I sent in the damaged drone on Aug 31. They confirmed today and provided a tracking number for the replacement drone that is supposed to be on its way. No Mavic 2 yet but I believe it will be at sometime in the future. Need to work a little on my flying skills first though. LOL

So many things i like about your videos Adam. Firstly the style: Relaxed and with a smile etc. (suits my pace). Then: the mixture of good filming and good Pictures. Trying to create some video myself, using drone footage and making a good holistic story («I am on this trip, I show you my cup og coffee/tea, my environment, my photo handcraft and my way of translating what i see into pictures») really makes a huge difference. I enjoy seeing Nikon in use. Living in Norway, it is easy to relate to your environment. Most of it could have been in my «back yard». Last: I simply like your pictures and your colour «signature». Your Videos are definitely high quality products Thanks!

Thanks for another great video! I don't blame you for not getting a shot of Elk Falls. It's a difficult location. I was there last winter and couldn't get a good composition. Everything was either black or white!

Always useful Adam. I loved the 3rd image the best (the 2nd photo of that 2nd scene) I thought the natural bordering on the right from the tree helped pull my eye right to those gorgeous quirky trees in the distance. Beautifully lit...well done!
Hello Adam, my favourite was showing less of that large tree, I also liked the root of the tree in the foreground which acted as a windowsill encouraging the eye to go up and over, taking the eye to the central area of the scene.
Oh yes, I see how only showing a portion of the tree is really effective. I definitely like the second one better. Yes, very useful. Leslie

...Thanks Adam, I got my Sat. morning RUclips fix... So as not to forget, I most always click the thumbs up button before viewing, you never disappoint! The gleam on those wet skunk cabbage leaves really worked along with the composition itself. The pathway shot where you moved in closer to the tree trunk was well done too. The scene just seemed better balanced that way & giving the tree that enormous effect. Your approach to composition is enjoyable to watch as it applies to all camera setups that most people can have a go with. Okay, back to cutting firewood! Cheers... :-)

Very nice vlog Adam, I really like the idea of composition techniques especially using a wide angle lens and explaining foreground techniques and methods to get a better overall photo.
Good tip on 'size of a tree' look :)
Really helpful to me. I often don't look for the intimate shots of plants as in the first example and I liked that image. As for the ones with the big spruce on the right, I hav not considered only including part of the tree to let the viewer consider the size. I definitely thought that was a great tip and one I will use. I liked that image with the spruce extending past the edge of the frame the best. It does make the tree seem larger and more impressive.

Tasso Kago- Your home state made me think of Arunachala Hill and Sri Ramana Maharshi, whom I read about nearly 25 years ago and still hear of or refer to from time to time in certain circles. Well, not familiar with India geography I thought perhaps Arunachala Hill was in Arunachal Pradesh, but after a little research I see that's not the case. You are in the farthest northeast, whereas Arunachala Hill is in Tamil Nadu, the farthest southeast state of India. Like you Tasso, I also am inspired y Adam's videos, and charmed by his love of the woodland and his pleasent personality.
Rick Kikta- yes, arunachala hill and arunachal pradesh is quiet a different things,arunachala hill is in tamil nadu as you mention and arunachal pradesh is located at north eastern most part of India,,,inhabited by different tribes and sub-tribes and untouched virgin forest and vegetation....

Great information. I love the compositions. Forests are really tough to "organize". You did a great job. Loved the presentation with only the small suggestion in my previous comment.
Many vloggers do this for the images they show. First they show zoom in portions and then the overall photo. I think it is more appropriate to see the overall as that is what is photographed and then if it is necessary zoom into parts of the photograph.
Point well taken, however, it is more to fill the time and keep the video moving a bit. I could place the shot up on the screen for 40 secs or longer but it is pretty static even if I apply some kind of movement.
I think the zooming is fine. Just I would like the whole photo first for a bit and only then the zoom and pan. But, that might just be my desire to see the outcome as a whole photo before I see the pieces.

Great video. I loved the framing of the first shot and was really curious to see the “with/without polarizer”. Personally I found the glare on the right leave very distracting and thought the polarized version would be more pleasant. Have a good trip in the Rockies. Cheers
