Dude! I've worked with kids like this, sometimes more severe, and only once a week did the company I worked for ever let the kids be exposed to music. And even then it was just a cd playing, not actual instruments. I love these videos, they bring a tear to my eye because I have such a heart for these kids. Keep up the good work man!

I had to do a research paper on a possible occupation I would like to pursue and I came across an interview you did on the internet. I then found this video and am so thankful I did because now I know for certain I want to become a music therapist. Thanks for inspiring so many, including me, and helping me decide what I want to spend the rest of my life doing! God Bless!

Hey Ryan! You're probably getting sick of hearing from us music therapy students from USU. I loved how in your first clip you were able to integrate modern technology in your session. I was just wondering if you had a specific music app you used, either in this example or in other sessions. I think one of the most important things as music therapists is keeping up with the times. Being able to use modern technology in a session is a good way to connect with clients, especially with children with special needs, since they probably use different applications of technology at home. Do you know of any music therapy apps, or music apps in general, that can be helpful in music therapy sessions?
    Thanks,
    Kelsey

I really love what you are doing..Music therapy is a wonderful research..It is a fabulous fusion of music in medicine...Its a miracle..Medically, autism and down syndrome childrens unable to respond to any of action but with music they able to communicate and react..i find it amusing.. I am from Malaysia..MT is not well practised over here but they are group of community working hard to bring awareness to public about MT..Just would like to ask you what kind of efforts do you make to get more attention from the public and do u hv any plans to do it internationally..how can we lend a hand in that...

Hi Ryan, I'm a music therapy student at USU as well, and I have a quick question for you. I noticed that around 2:50 you waited a while for the client to respond before continuing. In my experience so far, I have found it difficult to know whether to keep waiting after I ask a question or to prompt for the answer. Do you have any thoughts on this? How long did it take you become comfortable with waiting?
Also, I have one more question. Do you think it is more effective to use well-known children's songs or to introduce less well-known or original songs? I am doing my practicum at a preschool right now, and I have wondered whether it is as effective to use new songs that the children are not familiar with.
    Thank you,
    Sarah

I would absolutely love to have a job like this. these videos just warm my heart so much. music has been a big part of my life for as long as I can remember, and to be able to share it with someone who needs it would just make me so happy. I've never really had an experience with children who have special needs, but I think it would be great to be able to connect with them. I also think I would need to have some more skill with the instruments I play, like piano, guitar, and ukulele. but overall, I think this would be a wonderful job.

    Hello, Ryan!
I'm studying music therapy right now at USU, and I was wondering about the section of this video that starts at 3:07. The boy shows distress at first, so the fact that you quickly decided to change your approach only goes to show that you're an experienced therapist and that you're trying to be there in the moment with the child. But I wondered what your thought process was and what made you decide to try setting the drum to the side and drumming on him and yourself instead?
    Thank you!

Hi Ryan! I am also a MT student at USU and have a couple questions for you. First, what would you say is your music therapy philosophy? Second, I can tell you really love working with this population--it is so fantastic to see how attentive to and in the moment with your clients you are!--and I noticed in your reply to Trisha that you've been working with people with special needs for 14 years. Throughout those years, what are some of the biggest challenges you've run into and how have you overcome those? I guess I have one last question, too: to an aspiring music therapist wanting to work with this population, what are some tips you can offer? Thank you so much!

Hi Ryan, I am a Music Therapy student at Radford University and I am writing a speech for my core class and I need to use a visual aid and I really enjoy your video because it represents what I want to be doing as a music therapist. I was wondering if I could use a clip from your video for my project.
    Thank you!

    Hey Ryan,
I am studying Music Therapy at Utah State University right now and I have a couple questions for you. Do you compose the music for the majority of your interventions or if you use popular songs that are written by others as well? If you do use both, which do you feel is most effective? How did you train yourself to have the courage to completely drop your plans and be in the moment? Also, how long have you been working with people with special needs? Is that the population you originally wanted to work with when you started your career? Thank you!
    Trisha
