Donald Fagen covering The Grateful Dead. One of the coolest things I've ever seen.
His low-rent friends are Dead
@@AverageCanadianGuy LOL. Brilliant!
That last guitar solo was killer.
Well, well, well
You can never tell
Knowing how much of a perfectionist Don is i'm really surprised he likes the Dead, with their whole "music plays the band" attitude. This is so awesome
In response: I walked out of My last Dead show (Tampa mid-90s & #60±). I'm not at all surprised that Fagan did this. I'd expect them to work together, actually. The flexibility in there was really amazing & the musicianship among basically 6 soloists flexing from the 1st verse of this>the first verse of that>the THIRD song>a jam>second verse of #1>second verse of #2> (or 1st & 2nd verses>next & on & on. NOT a 'medley'! As many as you can keep together in your head & more than that. For Donna to be up there showed incredible strength & ability to read the sound (walk off or stay on the stage? A 30 minute jam or into a song I sing vocals on from the first verse -‽ She was the only one who had a Gold Record on the first induction of the R & R Hall (Muscle Shoals Singers Percy Sledge 'WAMLAW'. THEY were waiting on RRHoF that she had from Muscle Shoals' mid-60s. Whatever - I don't do death well so I walked away from them turning into a cover band (Dear Mr Fantasy -? What? WHY? A 'review' now?
@@davedillon1372 The Dead always played covers.
Opposites attract!
This is hella cool. Fagen's voice works incredibly well on this song, thanks for posting it (and thanks to whoever put it on the sd subreddit)!
The intro and that horn arrangement in the chorus makes it sound like it should be on Kamakiriad. So funky. Wish this was on streaming services! Donald is the king
Great musicians know who great musicians are!
The Dukes! Dig the Jon Herington solo.
wow!
Makes sense. One of the more Dan’ish Dead tunes.
Interesting that Tom Scott orchestrated on Steely Dan and Dead albums in the mid 70’s
Like it.
Love the horn arrangement, a Walter solo wouldve been great on this, this is the tightest version of Shakedown Ive ever heard even from the Dead. Great upload
Carolyn and Cynthia at 5:35. Double swoon... 😍
That’s actually Catherine Russell, not Cynthia Calhoun. Nonetheless, I agree!
now i feel even worse missing the dukes back at HSBG fest that year.
but this is wonderful. never thought of fagen as closet dead head, well, well, well....
and boy do the horns work!
I don't know why, but I"m a little surprised that Donald Fagen knew this song.
They wrote "King Charlemagne" about Owsley which was released in 1976 (The Royal Scam). Fagen has said that if he hadn't become such a studio perfectionist, he would have played in a jam band.
Justice arrives! Late, but still arrived with respect & this LP was walked away from by Lowell George "Jerry Garcia is perfectly capable of producing this LP himself."! Nice to see, thanks
As you're paying attention right now, I've a quick question for you. Feel like making a phone call?
