As one who guided fall elk, deer and sheep hunts and wrangled families and groups into the wilderness areas with horses and pack mules in the Gunnison Country for 20 years, I enjoyed this story. Brought back lots of memories that I enjoy from the rocking chair next to a warm stove that is my "out to pasture" winter time filler these days. Thank 'e kindly!

Ever since I read about Nine Mile in an issue of Western Horseman, I've wanted to visit the outfit. Thank you for sharing their work with us and all the best to these hardworking folks.

Yes..... What does happen to these animals of burden when they're spent?? How do you know when people rent them, they're not abusive to them? Not like renting a snowmobile etc. living, breathing being's. Wondering....... They don't have a favorite person, they're just what???

When the animals are no longer able to work, then what? Auction and slaughter?

They probably put them out to pasture. And they could also be used in a family setting for young riders.
