Just a heads up, this film was made in 1983, but is set around 1940.

Yes, 1940 exactly.
Yes, it's the narrator in 1983 remembering his childhood.
I argue 1939. The Wizard of Oz characters were still current, less than a year since the movie. The decoder pin clearly says 1940, but like car model years, late 1939 releases would probably say 1940. To me the capper is the calendar hanging in the kitchen. I can't make out the year, but the 1st in on a Friday, which fits with December 1939. Not that it makes any difference.
@@randyshoquist7726lmao you just came on here and quoted the first CBR article that pops up when googling the movie. But as that same article clearly states, the red Ryder wasn't released until spring 1940. Along with the decoder that says 1940, sets the date in 1940. Regardless of what that CBR article says, The decoders weren't like cars and he definitely wouldn't have gotten an early next year model. In fact the opposite is true, like any other toy. The early year stock would've still been the past years models. New year models wouldn't have been stocked until later in the year. The calendar was just a movie goof.
The story takes place in the 40's. There's 7 movies based on this family. All written as radio shows by Jean Shepherd who narrates and tells Ralphie where the line starts.
I have not heard of more movies, just the sequel that came out about 10 years ago.
What are the other six movies? I want to watch them all.
Witches? While this movie came out in 1983, it takes place in 1940. The Wizard of Oz was released in 1939, and was popular in 1940. That's why the characters from the movie (Tin Man, Lion, Witch, Dorothy, etc.) were prevalent.
Also, much of the U.S. still has an "Eastern European" approach to child rearing-especially the South and Midwest. However, it is not often portrayed in TV and movies. My friends and I were well acquainted with the belt when we were growing up. Just the fear of the spanking you would get when your dad got home was enough to keep you from doing something stupid.

The time period this is supposed to take part is during is 1940. The depiction is pretty accurate. I came along in the 1950s and a lot of the sophistication shown was only found in the big cities. Glad you liked it. Have a Merry Christmas. Santa is NOT real? What a spoiler!
Actually the Christmas season was very much like that in the early 1960's--things hadn't changed all that much when I was a kid.

Not believe in Santa Claus? You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get your Papa to hire men to watch all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if they did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove?
Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see.
Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that's no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders that are unseen and unseeable in the world.
You tear apart the baby's rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, or even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived, could tear apart. Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernatural beauty and glory beyond.
Is it all real? Ah, Jeff Koppang, in all this world there is nothing else as real and abiding.
No Santa Claus? Thank God he lives and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, maybe 10 times 10,000 years from now, he will continue to make glad the hearts of children.
The narrator is the great American humorist Jean Shepherd, who wrote the stories in the book mentioned in the opening credits. He also makes a cameo as the bearded man who tells Ralph to go to the end of the Santa line.
My favorite part is when the seemingly unattached and "grumpy" dad turns out to be the hero in the end when we find out that HE, and he alone, bought Ralphie the coveted BB gun. You could see the joy in dad's eyes knowing he gave little Ralphie the one thing he really wanted. My second favorite part is when Ralphie's mom "covered" for him about the fight by distracting the dad from the fight to the sports page. Yes, as children, we saw many sides to our parents but as you grow older, you realize just how much they really tried to give you a good life. No set of parents are perfect, so as long as you can realize that fact, the sooner you'll appreciate and love them for everything they tried to do ... for you.
I cant wait. watch this every year when they play it for 24 hours straight on TNT. glad biss is watching this
Classic. My favorite part will always be the moments where the mask slips, a d the father is truly happy. Especially where Ralphie opens the last present. The ridiculous movie I love suddenly becomes so deeply touching.

They do sell the bunny outfits and replica leg lamps in stores and online and in America this movie is played on tv on repeat for 24 hours starting at 8 pm on christmas eve and ends at 8 pm christmas day night.
I think I was 11 years old when I figured I was too old to believe in Santa. in my son's case, when he was close to figuring it out, I told him that the spirit of Santa lives on in parents.
my most memorable Christmas when I was a child, I was 12 years old in 1976. it wasn't about the presents. on Christmas Eve, I could see the living room from my bedroom: the Christmas tree lights were on, gifts were under the tree, and music was playing softly in the living room, and my parents were dancing in each other's arms.
my dad passed away 10 years ago now, and that first Christmas was particularly hard for all of us, and I shared with Mom that memory of them dancing together.

I'm so sorry you were spoiled at such a young age!! I was the youngest of my family by quite a bit (my youngest brother is 8 years older than I am) and my brothers all did a great job protecting the secret and allowing me to enjoy the magic of Christmas as a child. Even my cousins, uncles, and aunts were good about letting me believe. A classmate here and there at school would tell me, but what did they know? After all, my whole family told me the opposite, so who am I gonna believe? My cool as hell big brothers, or some rando kid at school? I found out when I was about 10 or 11, but I had kinda figured it out on my own and was ok with it. I don't resent my family for letting me believe in Santa, and sometimes I wish I still believed. Christmas was so much more magical and fun back then.
Found out Santa wasn't real around 8. I'm from a family of 9 kids, so after you found out it was almost seen as a "right of passage". Because all the kids that knew were the "elves" and we would help set up presents and stocking. Then when we were done got to wake up the younger siblings to get a "sneak peak before our parents wake up". Definitely a good way to make it more fun once you find out

The reason you see so many witches in this movie is because the Wizard of Oz movie had just come out the previous year in 1939. It was the first movie to use Technicolor and it was a massive hit in the theaters.

1935's "Becky Sharp" was the first feature film to use Technicolor, not "The Wizard of Oz."

As a retired teacher I can't resist--please consider this an answer to your question: In English, we call the "pattern" which gives traction (traction is the ability to grip the road) tread. So, for example, we might say "those tires were completely bald, there was absolutely no tread left on those tires." (We can also say "bald" - like someone without hair - if the tire has no tread).
Dads like that refusing to get rid of their bald tires until they had absolutely no other choice is an age old story, but certainly not an untrue one. 😄
On the other hand, radials is something more understandably missing from those tires. The radial tire design was patented in 1914, but weren’t actually produced until about 34 years later (and didn’t become common for quite some time after that).

Santa is very real. He's the spirit of Christmas that allows people to be good to each other for a couple of days of the year.
I couldn’t even guess how many times I’ve seen this movie. Probably in the hundreds. It was always on TV in the weeks leading up to Christmas. You couldn’t escape it.
This is my favorite Christmas movie, as you may guess from my profile photo(I visited the actual house where the movie was filmed. It is a museum now, but may not continue to be now that it is for sale), but it is also one of my favorite movies PERIOD. I'm happy to see you watching it.
It sold to a guy that was a board member and a lifelong clevelander. They announced it around Thanksgiving.
You can also go to medina and go down the slide. It's in a place called Castle Noel by the square.
I also told my entire family that the only thing i wasn't for Christmas (even if it takes 5 years) is the big leg lamp. (A Browns superbowl would be nice also!)
Regarding the witches, another poster mentioned that the movie is set around 1940 and the children's film The Wizard of Oz that had witches in it came out in 1939 so it was must have been a cross- marketing promotion. The family's home had an old coal furnace and first or second generation electrical wiring and only the radio, a phonograph and perhaps a piano for entertainment. Television did not begin to come in to general use until the late 1940s and was not in almost all homes until the mid to late 1950s. The author/narrator himself was born in 1921 so he would have actually been 9 years old in the year 1930. As for the joke about Christmas day dinner, even today pretty much the only restaurants open are Chinese, with customers and staff of others eating with their families at home.
A lot of Christmas movies play up the magic of Christmas. This movie brought back the magic of being a kid at Christmas

I didn't notice it for a few watchings, but when his mom goes back and turns the lamp off, then says it's to save electricity, all the other lights on the house are on. 😂 This is a truly wholesome classic.

The movie was based on 1939 or 1940. Wizard of Oz was the big hit movie. Thats why so many references to Witches and other wizard of oz character.
there were witches in the department store santa scene because the wizard of Oz just came out & was pop culture at the time.

I saw "The Holdovers" a few weeks ago. Really well done movie. I have basically abandoned the movie theaters. It was the first one I have seen in several years.
I haven't sat down to this movie in almost 3 decades now, this was a big nostalgia trip to watch along. A lot of elements of this movie are very relevant to my childhood, specifically the family dynamic.
I put together at a very young age that Santa was not real. Can't quite remember how that came about, maybe walked in on my mom wrapping presents one year. I'd say by 8 the illusion was shattered.

Their is actually a sequal to this you might want to check out. Its just as funny. Its called Ollie Hopnoodles Haven of Bliss. The same guy narrates and this time Ralphie is 14.
I was a huge fan of Jean Shepherd when I was growing up - listened to him on the radio and read all his stories. He is the writer and narrator of this film, based upon his childhood Christmas memories.

A klinker is a chunk of impurity that is a byproduct of burning coal. It can clog up a furnace, making it not burn as clean.

Great acting all around, when you realize it's told from Ralphie's perspective.
The director of this movie, Bob Clark also directed the horror movie "Black Christmas", the comedy "Porkey's"and the film Baby Geniuses, but my personal favorite film of his is the horror comedy "Children shouldn't Play With Dead Things"
I love this movie so much. The frozen pole scene was genius- they made a fake pole with a tiny hole in it and a vacuum inside so his tongue would appear to be stuck to it

12:41 my theory (as a parent) is that he’ll eat when he’s hungry. However, I learned the hard way that I need to ensure all of the “fun” food is out of reach. My daughter wouldn’t eat for a week but we found out that she was sneaking junk food out of the kitchen when we weren’t looking.

I had that kind of childhood, there were consequences back then. (I actually believe the lack of consequences/punishment today is a negative & harms children) -Worst spanking I ever got was when my grandmother told me to go pick a switch off the bush, & I came back with a twig. I've been watching this movie every year before I could remember with my 2 older sisters. It's the only time we shut up and stop fighting every year :P

That department store was the exact replica of the Santa's workshop I went to in 1960. My parents deserted me, left me the longest line I had ever stood in and froze up when I sat on the world's biggest Santa lap. Santa suggested a football and I could only manage to nod. They threw me down a slide with cotton for snow to break my speed at the bottom. I wondered why my parents made me stand in line alone and about two years later I realized it gave them a chance to do all the Christmas gift shopping while I was waiting in that line.
I didn't grow up with this movie. I lived it. I even looked like Ralphie when I was a boy.
My buddy who lives across the street from me has one of those leg lamps he put up in the window as part of his Christmas decorations every year. It's pretty awesome.

Hi biss....I was 11....you had it alive a year longer than me. The movie for me is a 10/10. Mostly because I looked like Ralphie until I was 12 or so. Also, here in America, it plays for 24 hours on a loop between Christmass eve and Christmass on a couple stations. I've seen home alone about 3 times this Xmas season.

Wow, almost nobody ever asks what a clinker is. Since this story is set in the late 1940s, the Parker family heat their home with a coal-burning furnace. Clinkers are bits of waste and impurities that get burned out of coal. They're mostly chunks of metal, stone, or other non-burning material that occur naturally in coal. They can clog or even damage a furnace or whatever else you're burning coal in. Once upon a time, I demonstrated blacksmithing at a museum, and we used coal for the forge fire. Every now and then they'd get a dirty batch of coal, and we'd be picking clinkers out of the fire all day. They're called clinkers because they make a clinking sound when you drop them or hit them with a tool, due to the metal in them.
I love this movie, in large part, because it reminds me of my own childhood (not back in the 40s, but back before the US became screwed up).
This movie is very accurate in its portrayal of once upon a time America.

I still remember the Christmas when I got my very own Red Rider BB gun. It was my constant companion for many years and the one threat for me to not get into trouble was to have it taken away from me. That did happen more than a few times and I was pretty sure that that was the end of my life every time it happened.

A "clinker" is the coal slag, the part of the coal that won't burn in the furnace.
A clinker formed in the burn chamber could disrupt the function or air flow coal resulting in smoke or Oder from the furnace. The damper adjustment regulated the air flow into the burn for moderating the heat or efficiency. We still have a coal door and old coal bin in our 1940 vintage house long ago converted to gas. Clinker became a more general term for a malfunctioning thing.
Hey Biss. I think I was 11 maybe 10 I realize the whole Santa thing. I credit my older brother and my older sister, my brother 5 years older and my sister are 6 years older than I was that they didn't ruin it. A little story note on the movie. At the end with the duck at the Chinese restaurant. The woman who played the mom her reactions were real. The whole cast knew that it was going to be a duck with the head on and that they were going to chop it off. But she had no clue that scene was real and her reactions were real. This took place about the same time "The Wizard of Oz" came out. The witch, the lion, the tin man were all characters from the movie.

My dad would have handled "duck" very differently. He simply would have said to me something like, "Don't ever let me hear you talk that way in front of your mother or sister". And that would have been that.

Just an FYI. The tongue stuck to the pole was actually a hole with suction through it. No tongues were injured in the filming of this movie.
Hello Bisscutie! I enjoyed your reaction to this beloved movie. It's on 24 hours a day on a certain station in the U.S. during Christmastime. Like you with Home Alone, I got tired of watching it, but looking at RUclips reactions, I got a new kick out of watching the movie again. I see you received most of the details by other contributors. The actual house it was filmed is located in Cleveland and stands as a tourist attraction including the leg lamp aka electric sex! 😂 As far as when I remembered that Santa was a myth, I think I was 9 or 10 and because I was the oldest, I had to keep it a secret for many years for not to spoil my younger siblings. I am curious if you remember ever receiving one special gift for Christmas and what it was.🎄 Merry Christmas!
My father took me to see it at theatre in '83' . Nothing like seeing this film with live audience when it was brand new. We did not know then what a huge Christmas classic this would become..

I was 5 when I found out Santa wasn't real. Got up to pee and heard my parents talking downstairs. Saw my mom and dad assembling a bike. Pretended I still thought Santa brought presents until I was ten. Finally told my mom she didn't have to keep pretending. Feel like she was more upset than I was.
I love how there's three or four "r"'s in "Christmas" when Biss pronounces it. My mom is Spanish so I feel right at home. 😉 Happy holidays everyone.

You had to get your own and you'd better not bring a skinny one. I'm enjoying your channel. Quick note: The setting of the story is the 1960's although the film came out in the 80's.
Actually, the BOOK it was based on was from the 1960s, but the movie is set in 1940. It's making my mind spin a bit that younger people can't tell the difference between 1940, 1960s and 1980s! And also making me feel really old! LOL

Where I grew up in the states we had a channel that played "24 Hours of A Christmas Story" so this film would be playing non-stop all Christmas day and night. You could never miss it. I think that about sums up how much it's tied to American pop culture.
I don't remember exactly how old I was when I found out Santa wasn't real - I just remember being really little, probably 9 or 10, and overhearing sounds on Christmas Eve night; I snuck downstairs and it was my parents setting out all the presents. I pieced it together from there, even the letter from Santa I got I realized looked an awful lot like my dad's handwriting - BUT I didn't tell anyone that I knew. And the following year right before Christmas, I arranged with my older sister a prank: we went out & got extra gifts that I hid in my room, I forged a letter from Santa with my dad's handwriting, and we hid the presents and letter in the back of all the presents. That Christmas day after all the other gifts had been opened, I said, "wait... what about those?" And my sister and I pulled out the gifts and letter - my parents were stunned silent. We came clean pretty quickly because, frankly, we were laughing at their reactions. My dad was so moved, saying we'd made him believe in the magic of Christmas again. So... when I found out Santa wasn't real - I guess I became Santa 😂 Crăciun Fericit ✌🏻💚❤

I've always had an analytical mind, that said I stopped believing in Santa Claus at five years old. I stopped believing in god at 18.
I was 11 when this movie came out and I got a Daisy Red Rider BB gun for Christmas that year. My mom would quote that line every time she seen me with it. 😂
I don't know if you like to play games, but I would like to suggest to you to check out Baldur's Gate 3, maybe even doing a live playthrough stream! It's a masterpiece, and SO fun!

My Kindergarten teacher told the whole class that Santa wasn't real while listening to "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus", so I would have been 5 or 6. My mom was PISSED at that teacher.

I guess that I was 7 or 8 when I got a BB gun & 9 or 10 when I got a hand-me-down 22 cal. bolt action rifle. I also had a pet alligator at 9 or 10. That was life in Texas in the 50's.
