- Sgt. Zeev, a Lone Soldier in the IDF, serves in the Golani Brigade and participated in recent Operation Protective Edge. He shares his memories of his childhood, the passing of his friend Sean Carmeli, and his experiences serving as a Lone Soldier in the Israel Defense Forces.

I admire you and all of the members of the IDF so very, very much. To me, the soldiers of the IDF are the "canary in the coalmine" for the rest of the world and I hope you do not misunderstand that saying. I come from mining families in Northumberland, UK, and believe you me - many, many of us admire all of you and are very thankful for what you do even though you never often receive thanks from Western "democracies". Stay strong for all of us. I have supported your organisation today and will continue support whenever I am able. May I say, "Shalom".

I had planned to go to the Israeli Army but didn't have the money to stay there for the period prior to my draft date, I had planned to go into Totchanim or Tzanchanim. I joined the U.S Navy instead. It's a big regret of mine. I went to Israel in January and am counting the days until I can go back for good. Living in exile is an absolute hell.
