@@Harvey1211 The best part about it is the fact that Shaun *refused* to elaborate 🤣 At least the next-lowest top offer (£5,000; offered in S6 by Mark) came with an explanation, albeit only three words: “One. Answer. Right!” (in the cashbuilder, that is)
I remember that really well. The team were cheering on Mark to catch him, to which he did. I don't know if you noticed but if someone took something like a minus one or two back in the early days, the team would be pretty pissed like it's a witch hunt. But in the current days, the team would more likely be like no judgement here, it's fine cause it's strategy.
Controversial but even though I could understand why the team is unhappy with Steve taking the minus at the end, I personally wouldn't be too fussed about it because he would still be an extra body in the final. Not to mention that the team won by one in the end so in a situation where they get caught, I'm sure they wouldn't be gloating over the fact that they gotten rid of Steve.
@@violin01If Mark had gotten the flea question right and caught the team with about a split second to go, I wonder if they would’ve considered the fact that Steve being there could’ve saved them?… 🤔 Bearing in mind this was only Series 3; the strategy behind the mechanics of the game hadn’t been well fleshed out and thought through yet. If they did lose, they’d probably just chalk it up to “Mark being too strong” and not pay a second thought to Steve.
Adding on to what @violin01 has said, The Chase really has changed overtime. Until about 2012, people were playing as individuals and didn’t really think about the team aspect. They saw it as them as one person against the chaser rather than a team of four against the chaser. If I’d have got that sort of reaction from taking the low offer, I would be scarred for life honestly. Do you think a low offer is ever acceptable?
@@Harvey1211 As I’m sure you’d know, Harv, I *always* advocate for more support of low/minus offers haha. The thing is, it’s ultimately a game of strategy and teamwork, as you say. People say they’re there for the money; even if you bank £100,000, you still have to beat the chaser to take it home. People say they want pride and dignity; wouldn’t there be more pride and dignity to be able to claim that you took money away from a chaser? The only argument I can kind of understand is if you’re just there for the experience, but even then, I would want the experience of being in the final chase, as that is without a doubt the best part of the show! 😆 Point is, if every player is an extra step in the final, why wouldn’t you want to maximise that head-start by having everyone back, even if it means some people have to go low or take money out of the bank? If your team ends up winning by 1, you’ll be forever grateful to the hero (or heroine) who took -£6,000 just to get back.
Hundreds of contestants wish they had faced Mark in that performance.
20k was an insult
right? With that cashbuilder in episodes today, he'd be offered 50k easily.
@@violin01 Was that normal back then, for the high offer to be so piddly?
@@Foxhound3857 Yes it was. I can never forget watching someone in Series 1 being offered only *£6,000* for their £3,000 cashbuilder!

Seat four was given the first ever minus offer which he took
