  • Je Tsongkhapa Lobsang Drakpa (1357- 1419) was one of the most important figures in Tibet, historically and philosophically and one of the principal founders of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism-the school of the Dalai Lamas. 2019 marks the 600th anniversary of Lama Tsongkhapa's parinirvana.
Thupten Jinpa, a scholar-practitioner and long-time translator for His Holiness the Dalai Lama, that has recently written 'Tsongkhapa - a Buddha in the land of snows' (Published by Shambhala Nov 12, 2019) the most comprehensive portrait available of Jé Tsongkhapa .
He shares his experience of having just completed a new modern biography of Je Tsongkhapa, which is forthcoming in time for the 600th anniversary of his nirvana. Jinpa draws upon his deep connection to Tibetan Buddhism and extensive scholarship in sharing Tsongkhapa's life, thought, and major contributions to Buddhist thought and practice.
"I congratulate Thupten Jinpa, my translator of many years, for preparing this fresh biography of Jé Tsongkhapa. I am confident that it will enable a broader readership to appreciate the life, thought, and legacy of this exceptional Tibetan philosopher and teacher." -from the foreword by His Holiness the Dalai Lama
    /Je Tsongkhapa Lobsang Drakpa
A devout monastic, Tsongkhapa took on the difficult task of locating and studying all of the Indian Buddhist classics available in Tibet in his day. He went on to synthesise this knowledge into a holistic approach to the path of awakening. In an achievement of incredible magnitude, he integrated the pivotal yet disparate Mahayana teachings on emptiness while retaining the important role of critical reason and avoiding the extreme of negating the reality of the everyday world.
    /Dr. Thupten Jinpa

Jinpa's latest book, Tsongkhapa: A Buddha in the Land of Snows will be released in time for the 600th anniversary of Je Tsongkhapa's nirvana in December, 2019. He met HH when he was 6, when Dalai Lama visited his school. He asked HH how he could become a monk, and HH said to study hard and you can be a monk anytime you want. Speaking of foreshadowing...
