  • "Tsongkhapa: Philosopher, Teacher and Yogi" - Thupten Jinpa PhD
A part of "The Life and Legacy of Lama Tsongkhapa" presented by Tse Chen Ling.
This event was held at Tse Chen Ling in San Francisco on May 4, 2019
Tse Chen Ling was truly honored to have Thupten Jinpa, principal English translator to His Holiness the Fourteenth Dalai Lama, come to Tse Chen Ling as part of our year-long series "The Life and Legacy of Lama Tsongkhapa."
Thupten Jinpa shared some of his experience of having just completed a new modern biography of Je Tsongkhapa, "Tsongkhapa: Buddha in the Land of Snows" which was released in November 2019 in time for the 600th anniversary of his nirvana. Jinpa drew upon his deep connection to Tibetan Buddhism and extensive scholarship in sharing Tsongkhapa's life, thought, and major contributions to Buddhist thought and practice.
    About Thupten Jinpa PhD
Thupten Jinpa is a former Tibetan monk who holds the Geshe Lharam degree, as well as a B.A. in philosophy and a Ph.D. in religious studies, both from Cambridge University. Since 1985, he has been the principal English translator to H.H. the Dalai Lama and has translated and edited numerous books by the Dalai Lama, including the New York Times Bestsellers Ethics for the New Millennium and The Art of Happiness.
Jinpa’s own publications include works in Tibetan, English translations such as Mind Training: The Great Collection and The Book of Kadam, and books, including Self, Reality, and Reason in Tibetan Philosophy, Dispelling the Darkness: A Jesuit’s Quest for the Soul of Tibet (co-authored) and A Fearless Heart: How the Courage to be Compassionate Can Transform Our Lives. Jinpa is the main author of CCT (Compassion Cultivation Training), an eight-week formal program developed at Stanford University. He is the founder and president of the Compassion Institute, the Chair of Mind and Life Institute, founder of the Institute of Tibetan Classics, and an adjunct professor at the School of Religious Studies at McGill University. Jinpa lives in Montreal and is married with two daughters.
"The Life and Legacy of Lama Tsongkhapa"
Je Tsongkhapa Lobsang Drakpa (1357- 1419) was one of the greatest figures in the history of Tibetan Buddhism and the founder of the Gelug tradition.
The year 2019 marked the 600th anniversary of Lama Tsongkhapa's parinirvana. To celebrate this, Tse Chen Ling offered a 14-month long series of programs that celebrated the life and lineage of Lama Tsongkhapa. These programs reflected the core teachings and unique features of the Gelug tradition.

During Tsongkhapa's time, did lay people practice with the same intensity as monastics, or at least try to accomplish insights, tantra, and the path of the Lamrim? Great talk! Much appreciation Tse Chen Ling Community and Thupten Jinpa for sharing this wisdom.

Karl Lahner : " 'this is my body 'in Arameic ( Jiddish??) actually means
:' this is my self' " ( I am offering for you guys(and surely even more to just any one) ) '
(sorry if 🐒I🐂was lost in translation before ;-) ) :
🤔 the beauty of the moon shines so brilliantly in this water that is so clear to me : I really feel it in my fingers , I feel it in my toes and I can see my self in this lovely light , so why should I look up to the one that just is !!!
shouldn't I be afraid it will fall from the sky if I should even dare to think about IT ? , if only just to keep existing in my pond ??
Maybe Nagarjuna was tantrically afraid not to be able to be thankfull enough
maybe without his guts to look with closed eyes , just being depended on believing in the way of experiencing the art of life beyond his own circumstances🤝

I agree that Dr. Thutten Jinpa is a well verse in Lamaism. But he is lacking in true Buddhism. Because he believes in spirits, deities, reincarnations, bardo, prayer flags, butter lamps, smoke offerings, prayer wheels etc. These are rituals mixed of Hinduism and Bon. A true Buddhist is follower of Buddha's path.
