We didn't work on above ground pools much but honestly the pumps used today are much like the ones used in the 90's except all the materials got cheaper. Probably the most common pump we saw on AG pools (and some inground pools which didn't work well) was the Hayward Power Flo series which is still made today.

Some were flat, others domed with vents. This was before VGB certification was needed.
