Just jam out on it for like... 20 seconds or so? But then.. your gonna get a bunch of angry metal vio players.....lol
What brand is your electric? I have never touched an electric violin, but you inspired me. Also can any guitar effects pedals work with an electric violin?
It’s a Bridge Dragon electric violin. I don’t know about ‘all’ guitar pedals as it depends on the what each pedal does for example as to whether it would suit

That's fun! I'm an old fartknocker and guitarist with more equipment than I care to admit haha. I've pondered to play a little electric violin from time to time. Keep uploading stuff like this and I need to ask what an electric violin costs haha! How long is a piece of string kind of a question, but you had a series about regular violins a while back and now it's too late to hide the electric one haha! :D Also I like the video editing with the stompboxes and all that. Great fun instead of dry talking. Very creative!
That little jam that you start at 2:18 ~ I would love to hear you do that for hours on end. I'm not sitting here with my guitar in hand (or violin) like I usually am, but that sounds to me like the Pentatonic scale... we don't get to hear you play like that too often ya know... it's kind of a treat and it shows another side of you. Everyone knows you can jam out the classical stuff and any musician knows that someone who can play like that can play anything. I'm sure if I asked you to play a harmonic minor scale with a dash of diminished, you could rock it to all hell.... but to hear you do it is just amazing. Seriously, do a video on electric violin rock music. The one's that are out there are embarrassing. Most violinists that are doing the 'rock' thing with electric violins (in that sense of "electric") are just playing their own variations of what Eddie Van Halen might do if he were a violinist. The next thing you know, violin companies are going to add real frets and vibrato (tremelo) bars.... don't wanna get started on the difference between vibrato and tremelo and guitarists. They (we) don't seem to know the difference... unless we pick up a violin and attempt to bend strings....😂 😂
I was thinking like, "wow, a nice, professional tutorial as usual." Then Shrek came in XD I don't like the vanilla electric violin, because it sounds like an acoustic one minus the... acousticness? IDK it sounds lacking. But with pedals it sounds much more lively. By the way what's the first piece you play in the video?
Hello there! :) That sounded so amazing! I have the same electric violin as you and I am looking for that guitar-like sound at 2:18 . Which pedal do I have to buy if only want that effect? I do not know how pedals work at all so is buying just the pedal enough or do I need a specific cable or something? What do you connect the pedal to, a box or directly to the violin? Sorry if I sound dumb I really am an absolute beginner in the world of effects and stuff.
The sound you refer too is a combo of using 3 pedals. You can use the individual pedals, but you wont get that sound as it takes all 3 to get that specific sound I have worked on. Youre probably best to go to a shop and talk to them, but you will need another instrument cable and some patch cables to connect the pedals together.

So I’m wondering if you can make the same sounds from an acoustic violin? I love the sound of the acoustic it’s traditional earthy. I love the sound of the electric it edgy raw animalistic. I am a true rocker at heart. But there is always beauty in the traditional.
Possibly similar, but why would you do that! Defeats the purpose. The electric violin is great for amplification when playing at events where you just want to plug and play. An acoustic is what it is. An acoustic violin with amplification is again, for a different purpose. I don’t want to amplify my acoustic violin - I feel no need to. I just want a straight elec violin. Because they are multi stranded steel core strings of very high quality which produce a clear and warm tone - exactly what is needed on electric violins. Most other synthetic strings or even gut strings are too soft and so the sound doesn’t come through as well, as those are designed to work with the natural vibrations of the violin - not being picked up through a pickup of whatever kind; found on an electric violin. Hope that answers your question.
Hey there hun, I'm from the US I have a couple of cheap ones but the Vox Stomplab IIG I just got is doing pretty good. Also definitely look into more strings, and to get the crunchy sound you're looking for play double stops, 3rds and 5ths sound nice diminished chords also if you can manage. *Edit* Had a friend remind me that most classical is written in aeolian and ionian. Phryngian is great for metal or Santana esk Latin. Dorian is really bluesy and great for rock. Lydian makes it feel like edm. And DON'T use locrian. Personal bias, It's a horrible sound.
The idea is that a diminished chord typically has 4 notes, the triad and the flat 7th. Thus the idea of a distortion effect, with a typical 4 note double stop which is usually played in succession rather than at the same time. Hence why I suggested a violin with more strings.
@@TheOnlineViolinTutor Pitch shifters are fun and can greatly increase range. I got a multi effects pedal to sample everything before I found the sounds I liked. Hi Alison, recently subscribed to your channel and watching this video of your electric violin pedal rig in action and if you get the chance try a wah pedal - which should go first in your pedal signal chain - would sound great when either doing hammer-on/pull-off parts and when holding single notes!... 🙂
Haah, wicked! Idiot question, but what are the pedals called, please? And is distorting the sound their only job? Could you decide to use one to, say, start a loop? ....i am so green on all this, sorry.
I have a reverb, delay, combo drive and a blues driver. They each do different things to the sound. I have a looper pedal too, but I don’t use is as much as I should....
@@TheOnlineViolinTutor Oh! Thank you! I suppose a looper pedal is more for live-things, maybe? :) Must be heaps of fun to play around with all of those things, though! :D
I plug mine right into the BOSS ME-50 rackmount and play to backing tracks with drums, bass and guitar on my Spider Amp. The ME-50 comes with every effect BOSS makes.. and yeah, if you can jam out Diatonic sequences, it's gonna sound just as badass as an electric guitar, or better. The sustain and tone control can't be beat, but you ain't gonna sit at any campfires anytime soon with this setup.... this is pretty much how the violinist with the Transiberian Orchestra sounds....with the light show and all the other electrified instruments. I would love to have a Woods violin for this kind of jamming, especially with the arm-extension they have built underneath the violin that just rests on your chest. No tension in the hands whatsover... just a big 6 or 7K investment...😐😐😐
Someone gave you some good advice... either that or you did your research. I've owned every brand of effect ever made. "BOSS" is the boss for a reason. I've had people spill beer on my effects, I've seen them dropped when someone else is packing equipment, they've been drop-kicked and they can just plain take a beating. You can't say that for ANY other effects-line, not even MXR. Everything else breaks too easy and in a rock guitarists world, that isn't a good thing. I can't think of any other company that puts all of their effects (plus ALL variations of those effects) in one affordable package. You will love your BOSS effects, guaranteed. I could see you playing with the TSO also. You have that "sound" they are looking for and I've seen them about 5 times. Always with a new lineup... at least as far as Violinists are concerned. They get a female and they elevate her above the crowd. It's a sight to see and always the baddest azz playing, even surpassing the guitar solos. Good job!

What would you recommend as a good entry level effect pedal that I can use for years and add to in the future? Also, would you personally start with reverb or something else? I dont know when I'll be able to add another one so I dont want to get "bored" with it.
Reverb is just reverb. its not really classed (in my opinion at least) as an 'effects' pedal as it does not create a cool effect. Reverb can often be found on PA systems so often its not needed. I have a reverb, a blues driver, combo driver, looper, octave pedal and delay. As I said, you just have to buy what you feel is most useful to you and then know that you will add to them. Boss are a good brand that do all their pedals well. You can get cheaper, but they are crap. You will most definitely without a doubt get what you pay for in the pedal world. if you are in the UK, im selling a Boss looper pedal (single pedal) for £80 if you wanted to get started. Thats a good one to have a go with and is hours of fun!
Hey, not sure if you ever found a pedal or not, but I'd suggest getting a Boss DD-5 or DD-7. Both are relatively inexpensive, especially for pedals. Really good deals can be found on Reverb.com. These two pedals are both delay pedals and basically do the same thing. They'll add that really pretty echo to your sound. I believe both have an option for a "modulated" delay, which will give you a fuller sounding chorus/reverb sound, also very beautiful and great for violin. Loopers are also fun. I have a Ditto x2 which is pretty fun and I used to have a Boss Loop Station which was pretty perfect.
MayI ask what electric violin are you playing and where could it be purchased? I have been thinking about purchasing one and I’m not sure which one or where to get one. It’s a beautiful color. Thanks so much. Love your videos.
Awsome, but just added up the cost of everything - even minus the Bridge. Ouch. I guess with the pedaltrain you can build up your collection of effects.
Well yes, but bear in mind I didnt buy all this in one go! Its been collected over many years - the newest addition was the Nano board and the Volto - which is why I was fitting it all together. Pedals are not cheap buy any means, but you just buy what you need and then add to it. I guess I justify it because its what I do for a living....or am i just kidding myself haha
@@TheOnlineViolinTutor LOL. On guitar you use the distortion of an amplifier. I guess you can use your Boss Blues Driver and BC2 at the same time to do it. The main problem is that the violin is tuned at an higher pitch than the guitar so I'm guessing it will be a bit tought to get the same sound. The best I can do to help you is ro share a link with the same song played on cellos, the lower pitch makes all the difference in getting the sound. ruclips.net/video/5ViGb_Gy3AA/видео.html
Just remembered that you can try using an octave pedal to lower the pitch. You can check one out in the following video. ruclips.net/video/al3K-W6I7IU/видео.html Not sure how it will sound with distortion though.

I have linked everything under this video.
I guess I justify it because its what I do for a living....or am i just kidding myself haha
hell yes!

@@andresilvasophisma ..umm...well ok - not one to back away from a challenge (lol) any idea what kind of pedal will give me more of that sound?
@@TheOnlineViolinTutor LOL.
On guitar you use the distortion of an amplifier. I guess you can use your Boss Blues Driver and BC2 at the same time to do it. The main problem is that the violin is tuned at an higher pitch than the guitar so I'm guessing it will be a bit tought to get the same sound.
The best I can do to help you is ro share a link with the same song played on cellos, the lower pitch makes all the difference in getting the sound.

Just remembered that you can try using an octave pedal to lower the pitch.
You can check one out in the following video.

Not sure how it will sound with distortion though.
hey your heels. is that louboutin heels?
haha no.
I am dissatisfied. I did not see the Metal Zone.
A little overkill for the elec violin....

What's the black cable for if you have those small blue ones?
Black cable is for power (probably 9V DC) and the blue cable is for the instrument.
