I know they're not what they used to be since the company shut down in the states in the 90's but still the only pen that matters to me. love your videos. Some background information on the 51. It was designed in 1940 by the Bauhaus designer Maholy Nagy and the pen went into production in '41. I have a 1942 model with a vacumatic filler. I love the pen. It writes great and smooth, I think it was intended to be a "at work" pen to be used in the office. It's line is consistent and does not give the writer line variation. From the reviews I have seen, I think Parker could have done a better reintroduction model especially not using a screw on cap, as the original slip on design was elegant in its simplicity .

    Are all Parker converters compatible with all models?
    I mean, are for instance old Parker converters from the 90's (i.e. Parker Sonnet) compatible with current 2021 Parker 51?
    I'm asking because I tried to fit a converter from a 90's Sonnet into a modern 2021's 51 and it looks like I need to push hard (slimmer body on the 51? / thicker diameter on the old converter?), but I didn't to avoid damaging any of both.

However, since I started using bottled inks and converters, I have noticed that they tend to dry out quite fast unfortunately. Either the caps or the converters aren't very air tight. Parker nibs are a lottery (and I think that's part of its stigma), they can vary from extremely smooth to extremely scratchy, regardless whether they are made of gold or stainless steel. (In any case you will always write with the iridium point.)
    So, buying the 51 Deluxe (the most expensive one) will not assure you getting a smooth nib. Or smoother than the regular 51.
    Around 50% of my Parker nibs (most of them in 18K gold and regardless of the price of the fountain pen) are scratchy.
    Then, there's the fact of:
    1. Lacking a pamphlet (in any version: 51 Deluxe and regular 51) and a converter (in regular 51), what I totally agree, especially given the official retail price of both versions.
    2. Other considerations, such as the plasticous and light feel of its barrel, the non deeply posted cap, the non attractive raised hood, the same cheap nib used on the Parker Jotter, etc.
    3. And other more subjective considerations, such as the twist cap, the metal band up the grip section, etc.
    To finish, however, whether any version of this new 2021 Parker 51 fountain pen is worthy or not, it's up to each one. I think it all depends in the end on how much you like them, on what price you can get them for and if their nibs are or aren't scratchy. Supposing the same performance on both versions, in my opinion the 51 Deluxe is not worthy at all the extra price. But in my case, the regular 51 may be worthy at 39.80 € (the price I paid), as long as you're lucky and get a smooth nib.

    Since about a month I have the Parker 51 Deluxe Plum. When It writes, it writes smooth but with a pleasant amount of feedback. The problem is, that the nib dries out fast, what you would not expect since it is hooded. After a week I sent it back to Parker. They immediately replaced it with a new pen. But this one unfortunately also has the same issue. After a few minutes of use, the pen begins to skip. This Friday, I will go to my AD again to sent it back to Parker under warranty. Are there any more users of the new Parker 51 who experience the same problem?

    • @pengangsta
      @pengangsta  3 года назад +1

      Wow, what a hassle you’ve experienced with your Parker! I haven’t experienced any skipping or drying out while writing. The only time the pen dried out on me is if I didn’t use it for a few days and then I’d have to prime the nib. In the case of the hood, I think it’s on this pen for looks, which is disappointing. The original 51s the hood was supposed to prevent drying out. Notice that the hood of the new 51 doesn’t actually cover the nib. At this point I’m thinking that Parker needs to refine the new 51 a bit more.

    I own a couple of vintage 51s, including a teal double broad that writes like butter, but not only do they keep uncapping in my jackets, but the clip unscrews quite frequently. The modern steel version writes like a nail, and is quite a pain to use, not much pleasure there. However, the plum gold version is something else, very enjoyable. The only things I would say is that the larger clip is less elegant, and the plastic feels somehow softer than the almost glassy feel of the vintage (maybe due to time). Softer means more prone to scratches. Overalls I'm happy with the deluxe.

    Great video and fair assessment of the Parker 51. I ordered both as soon as they hit the Pen Chalet web site. I got the plum in the deluxe like you did and the teal in the steel nib. Fair call out regarding the fact that Conklin has figured out how to include a converter at a much lower price point. Your right there is a difference in the writing experience between the basic and deluxe however I do feel we over paid for these pens. Part of getting a pen over $50 should include a nice unboxing experience and packaging should reflect that. I have so many Parker pens and when they have relaunched pens like the mandarin duofold they did a better job. Have you checked out the new Leonardo’s on Pen Chalet...those look sharp. Which one will you get...I know you will, lol. I got two.

    Everyone gets to make a choice. If youre looking to buy a pen that will work like those of yesteryear, you might have to buy vintage, and all that come with vintage. Do your research, watch a few videos, find out before you buy. Anyone can be disappointed with a new purchase or thrilled. You put your money down and you take your chances. Most companies after all the hype, are out to make a living, and each does that however they think will work. Some companies are great at hiding that and others just don't care. We're all adults here, thats how the world still works... . I really enjoy my Sonnet, when it will write, and isnt all dried up each time I pick it up... . Would I buy another Parker fountain pen? I might, (just not a modern 51) ;-)

    I also have the Deluxe in Plum, I think it's a nice pen, but I do agree that the price point is a bit off considering what you get. I think moving the sale price down closer to $200, even down as far as $180 would make the Deluxe a slam dunk. It's funny, I've watched quite a few of the reviews and the comments regarding the new ones that I think are hilarious is all the complaining about the filling system being C/C. Someone even suggested that they should have used the Aerometric filling system. Everyone HATES the con-20 in the Metropolitan, but they think in the Parker 51 it would magically be better? I think people are being a bit unfair towards Parker. I think their modern nicer pens are absolutely lovely, but need a price adjustment.
