That little handoff from the snare to the kick at 6:10 is absolutely incredible. Love how dynamic Matt’s drumming has become, especially on this new album
Matt Garstka is an absolute legend. He has so many great videos of Animals as Leaders and other stuff he's done. There are some fantastic videos of him playing a live session with Eldar and Henrik Linder in their fusion band GEM. The amount of talent between those 3 dudes is just bonkers. I highly recommend them.
The Musicallity of this drummer is Up to any levels also his playing fulfill all the parts have ever written in drums section to make it perfect composed drum part !! Really out of this world is the control too!!!
I've been an animals as leaders fan since their first release, where Misha programmed the drums. The following album, Navene Koperweis played drums on and everything after that has been Matt. The joy of motion was his first album and theres a lot of really great songs on there. His performance of the song Para Mexer at Meinl drum festival is one I HIGHLY recommend. It's a technical song but very musical! Quite a happy song, and one that will showcase his playing in a different light. Cheers Andrew 🍻
I just saw their show last night in Kansas City and all I can say is...WOW. Matt is an absolute beast in such command of the drums. Another word that comes to mind is, effortless. He genuinely floats behind the kit and his cymbal work is magical. Every time I have seen them, I also regard it as witnessing history in the metal/progressive genre. They are atop a mountain dishing out a biblical feast for all who will follow.
The small moon gels spread around the head give you a lot more control over the amount and tone of the music. Something I did when engineering drums for the upcoming Veil of Maya record. Really helps you dial in the length of the drum note.
If you haven’t checked out the lessons and other educational material he puts out id highly recommend it. Some of the concepts are so unique in terms of getting to the heart of a tricky technique or mental barrier that they’ve become permanent fixtures of my lessons. He’s a great teacher and he’s so generous with his knowledge.
I'm obsessed with AAL music right now. These Matt's videos caused that. I liked AAL but after watching many of these videos, i'm digging their music deep!!! OMFG it's just INSANE what these guys are doing!!!
He did some Drumeo lessons back in 2016 and did a great playthrough of 'The Woven Web' you should get to sometime. There's a fun little surprise about a minute in!
For Animals As Leaders, Matt has playthroughs of Tooth and Claw (Joy of Motion) Physical Education (Joy of Motion) The Woven Web (Joy of Motion) Ectogenesis (Madness of Many) Inner Assassins (Madness of Many) Arithmophobia (Madness of Many) Backpfeifengesicht (Madness of Many) Monomyth (Parrhesia) And those are just the ones I know of, there could be plenty more and there's for sure a plethora of live footage to select from. Cheers and happy listening!
It's been said about all things in life that every now and then someone comes along and really leaves an impact. Gartska is that for modern drumming. He is this generations Vinnie Colaiuta.
Being able to follow Garstka on RUclips from his early days at Berklee to eventually replacing Navene K in AAL feels akin to being alive for Vinnie Colaiuta joining Zappa or something.
I think you're spot on with your observations that it really sounds like modern jazz in places. I was picking up on that, too, and I loved that about this track. There's a similar vibe in an older AAL track, "Kalimba." I don't know if there's a drum playthrough available for that track, but I recommend checking it out regardless.
Their is No weak points whatsoever when it comes to Matt's drumming abilities.. He has one of the Most Significant and Hardest Striking Drumming Styles i have Ever Heard. I have Animals as Leaders Weightless Album... Its Great music to listen to on some nice quality headphones. And lose yourself in a world they create with their instruments... The feeling is almost hypnotic!
For me, you should check one of the most impressive drum art of the last years... ARIC IMPROTA - BLUR LIGHTS ON THE VIDEODROME. Its 40 minutes but not a second is wasted.
I feel like some music is more for entertainment and some is more artistic. Same with movies. Animals as Leaders definitely leans to the art corner. But theres a reason why such a niche band has such a following. Their work speaks for itself and its just too good to go unnoticed.
For some reason I don't think this guy will get many requests, especially for his older material (which is utterly phenomenal but really under the radar), but if you see this please at least check out Anup Sastry - Discovery. One of the most emotive metal drum tracks ever. Love your work, keep it up!
In a somewhat similar but totally different genre, you should check out Plini. Had a few drummers, but always top notch. Some elements of Djent, but a jazzier and happier vibe. My favorite album of theirs is Handmade Cities. But their last really sounds fantastic as far as production goes. Check out Chris Allison playing "The Glass Bead Game". Lots of dynamics. (a signature of the Plini sound)
If I was going to compare Matt and AAL to anything, I'd say these latest AAL tracks in particular are more reminiscent of Meshuggah than anything. There is another track and playthrough from this session and from the same album called "Monomyth". If you liked this one, you'll enjoy that one too.
Imagine band mates telling you they have their parts all forged and now it's up to you to come up with drum parts only to have this arrive. I'd be all like - Yeah, I got an appointment to get my hair and nails done today, so it might be a few till I get back to ya. I'd send the damn thing off to Virgil and say, got any ideas? If so, feel free to have at.
I'm telling you, AGAIN, you REALLY need to check out Charlie Engen! You wanna see another drummer who could quite possibly (and easily in my opinion) fill in for Danny Carey for a TOOL gig ... I believe he could! 🤘🏼🥁🤘🏼

Love this guy's work. Animals as leaders are such a treasure.
I can't wait to hear more Bob!
This is classic Matt Garstka here. Always a joy to watch him play.
100%

Oh wow!!!
Thanks for the FYI
Check out the other new one “Monomyth”. It’s a quick 3 minute song but Matt is insane!
100% he should do monomyth
Comin' up!
Tool dream theater. Its like dark metal at times jazz. Their whole catalog is amazing
Animals as Leaders is a great band to just throw on some head phones, kick back, close your eyes, and just get lost in the sound.
Just lose yourself in the music Derek! Nothing better
He's so good. Love the new songs on the album and waiting on the full release. Ectogenisis is another good one from the previous album.
THANKS!
What a talent!! saw these guys live, incredible! The percussion is beautiful!
Absolutely glorious
Just learning this one song would be a masterclass in polyrhythms
Take me years Scott LOL
The Musicallity of this drummer is Up to any levels also his playing fulfill all the parts have ever written in drums section to make it perfect composed drum part !! Really out of this world is the control too!!!
My favorite video of Matt's is his solo over a 30bpm click track. It's truly mind blowing his ability to keep time through metric modulations.
That sounds awesome
@@AndrewRooneyDrums it really is
Yeah definitely check out some more Matt Garstka videos. He is fantastic and so is Animals as Leaders all round!
Absolutely!
I could never really get deep into Animals as leaders. But I enjoy their approach and always loved his drumming.
Yeah Julien this is dense stuff
Soo happy you got on this , was a crazy video ! Awesome pick 👏
So glad to be listening to more from AAL

Insane track and drumming, WOW 😱 Matt is Out of this world.
Sure is!

Shit was 🔥🔥.. ive watched that and lippincott 100s of times lol
Thanks for the tip!
"There's a real lack of connective tissue in that whole section there".. Excellent description and very on point.
The internal clock on Matt must be insane!
For Animals As Leaders, Matt has playthroughs of
Tooth and Claw (Joy of Motion)
Physical Education (Joy of Motion)
The Woven Web (Joy of Motion)
Ectogenesis (Madness of Many)
Inner Assassins (Madness of Many)
Arithmophobia (Madness of Many)
Backpfeifengesicht (Madness of Many)

He also has playthroughs for Lippincott and The Problem of Other Minds.
What a beast!!!
It's been said about all things in life that every now and then someone comes along and really leaves an impact. Gartska is that for modern drumming. He is this generations Vinnie Colaiuta.
MASSIVE call. Big kudos!
Matt is phenomenal live
One can only dream to have such facility....loved this
There's also a play through for the song Monomyth from a couple of months ago.
Being able to follow Garstka on RUclips from his early days at Berklee to eventually replacing Navene K in AAL feels akin to being alive for Vinnie Colaiuta joining Zappa or something.
A few people with the Vinnie comparisons!!

This is some SICK SH!T off this album... A fav of mine!!!
Matt is complete monster in terms of technic and chops ♡♡
Matt will take your grey riff and make it the most colorful sounding thing you ever heard
Matt always play first record live no shit. He's insane. Groove on complex signatures, that's the insane stuff, and creativity.
Subscribed and seeing them April 10th nyc!!!
So happy you did more Matt! I think ectogenisis would be a cool one, still weird but a bit more accessible in the groove department
I'll def get to it!
Their is No weak points whatsoever when it comes to Matt's drumming abilities.. He has one of the Most Significant and Hardest Striking Drumming Styles i have Ever Heard. Check out the dunlop session they did, it’s beautiful
I’ll get there!!
For me, you should check one of the most impressive drum art of the last years... ARIC IMPROTA - BLUR LIGHTS ON THE VIDEODROME. Its 40 minutes but not a second is wasted.
Yeahh Do the full vidéo review!
That would be amazing. There's no better showcase out there imo.
Just watched it, thanks for the amazing recommendation!
I'll get there Emanuel!

It's on the way!
He transcribes every note he plays too
i think you might have done this video already but "tooth and claw" is a good one by them!
Yes I did it!
Oh damn this is incredible
One of my favourite songs is still The Woven Web
Ace drumming. Sounds a bit like, Born In Dissonance by Meshuggah.
Matt Garska the type of guy to count quarter notes in s 7/8 groove
like your channel, I hope on this channel I can find a review of david silveria from korn and jerome dillon from NIN
Thanks for the requests!
Check out Cardinal Red - Monuments! There is a drum play through up and it’s pure 🔥🔥🔥

Just an FYI Matt Halpern has a new video as well. 😉
Right on!
Can't wait for the Mario Duplantier 2022 solo reaction
Amazing, he's my favorite drummer! Check out his own youtube channel for more playthoughs

Ectogenesis- Drum playthrough is absolutely insane.
Listen to GEM - Vertigo, Matt is the drummer for this track, pretty sure you will be impressed
micro aggressions is a good one off new album and my favorite conflict cartography
You gotta check out El estpario siberiano beast and the harlot. Dudes ridiculous
Can't wait to see more from him Erik!

The moon gels come in different shapes/sizes now. It may be the Meinl brand gels? I believe they're orange.

Please do Chris Kontos of Machine Head performing "Rage to Overcome " 2020 live drum cam.
A wizard on the kit
Aaaaarrrrgggghhhh!

Another great reaction video, Andrew! Here's one more Matt Garstka video to check out: ruclips.net/video/lNjOFNBkja4/видео.html
Thank you!
It’s if a chronomancer played drums.
Danny Carey, Mario Duplantier, Matt Garstka are my top three.
He's got WHAT cutout in his floor toms?! 🤷🏻♂️
Moongel :)
I see the song name and always think they spelled the band "Gordian Knot"'s name wrong.
🤯🤯🤯
Right James!?
It remembers me Meshuggah!
You really should check red miso
For animals as leaders this song is very digestible. A lot of their songs are like advanced calculus and make your brain hurt.
Wait!! You haven’t reacted to Monomyth?!?!
I haven't Adam!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums you’re in for a treat and some melting of the brain

Inner Assasins.

Next : monomyth
Than: ectogenesis
Then: the rest
Dude, in no remote way this sounds something close to Tool. Lol you okay?
I meant in concept.
No, doesn't sound like Tool at all
