The perfect way to begin a Saturday, with Showtime112 historical videos. General Enrico Pezzi, who was killed while evacuating wounded Italian soldiers after personally delivering supplies, was a fine example of a leader who shared the dangers of his soldiers and airmen. Many Italian officers were killed in action in Russia, while leading from the front. Well done, casting light on those who served with distinction.

Luftwaffe pilots preferred the various Damiler up-engined Italian fighters to their own Bf109s, mainly because of the superior cockpit design allowing for as much as +20% more space, with better maneuverability and airspeed performance

Excellent video on par with the previous part 1. You gained a new subscriber. Allow me one little note. The correct name of the 21st Group Commander is Major Ettore Foschini. The 21st Group comprised of the 356th, 361st, 382nd and 386th Squadrons. Both the 21st and the 22nd groups comprised 4 Squadrons because designated "Autonomous" or Indipendent i.e. not belonging to a Wing (Stormo), instead of the three for "regular" Groups of a Wing. Notwhistanding the shorter period of time (3 years of operations) and other factors, the "small" number of kills (when compared to German or Allied pilots) by the Italian pilots is due to the fact that the Regia Aeronautica did not "like" to record individual victories for fear of creating "Prima Donna" (something experienced during the WW1). The Regia Aeronautica dissuaded the pilots from claiming personal victories and preferred to assign the victory to the unit. The aerial victory would be credited to a pilot IF AND ONLY IF this pilot was the ONLY ONE to fire at the enemy plane (if another plane had fired at the enemy plane even without hitting it, the eventual victory would be credited to the Squadron or Group). Moreover the shoot down must have been witnessed and confirmed by another pilot.

Thank you for the feedback and for providing additional info. As for Major Foschini, that one seems to be a typo on my part. I remember some strange feeling when reading the name in the text but I didn't check it. I will have to learn to listen to my intuition :)

(Flight Sergeant) Luigi Gorrini, second highest Italian fighter ace. He passed away in November 2014 at the age of 97. One of my most precious possession is an autographed copy with dedication of the book "Vespa 2" (Wasp 2, his call sign) recounting his wartime career in the 85th Squadron (18th Group, 3rd Wing) of the Regia Aeronautica and in the 1st Group of the Aeronautica Nazionale Repubblicana.

The 2 workhorses of their successes were the Saetta but most importantly the Folgore , which performed well in North Africa and on the Mediterrean theather , mainland and balcans included . Credits go to the biplane Fiat CR42 but at the early stage of WW2 naturally .

I have a few books on the Hungarian Air Force’s operations on the Eastern Front, they operated in relatively limited numbers, but I think more than the Italians, and initially flew outdated types, like a locally modified Italian Reggiane Re-2000, known as the MÁVAG Héja, powered by a license produced Gnome Rhone Mistral Major. Later in the war they were equipped with Bf-109’s and FW-190’s. They also operated Stukas, Dornier 215’s, Junkers Ju 88’s, Heinkel He 111’s and Messerschmitt Me 210’s and 410’s among a lot of other types. They extensively modified the Me 210 and managed to make quite an effective aircraft out of it, unlike most of its operators.
Hungarians tend to be quite fastidious in their academic research and the books I have are quite exhaustively researched and well written. Hungary certainly produced a few aces on the Eastern front.

There were a great deal of issues with a 1940 Italy. Yes, Italian armament was outdated but why? Well, the Italians rebuilt their army and military for a war in 1933, not 1945. Simply put they rearmed too soon. The next biggest issue was the Italian command. The command structure was a bureaucratic nightmare; no cooperation between the Navy and the Air Force. Mussolini may have been personally responsible for this; he wanted full control and kept the Italian military commands isolated and fragmented.

Like we can see, the italians did not know a great success in the eastern front. But they did not improved their aviation, no one new model except the MACCHI C202 FOLGORE. There was an improvement of this plane, it was the MACCHI C205 VELTRO with a german engine a little bit more powerful but it arrived too late in the project of the italian production, on june 43, when the allied landed in Italia. So all the italian strength went to the national resistance, the game was over.
