    Nostalgic!
I also used to do Wado-ryu Karate.
I did karate for about three years and jujutsu kempo for about a year.
    I miss Otsuka Sensei.
I signed up for the channel.

Hi would you advice to learn karate or Taekwondo ?

If you want to see how it is done correctly, check out any demonstration by the late great Master T. Suzuki. On a different note I did not realize that covid was already around in 2016 as I see the photographers with face-masks.

Japanese people understood the civic virtue of wearing a mask to protect others from one's germs long before the pandemic.

On sent l'aura du guerrier émaner des deux premiers pratiquants ! C'est incroyable

    Why there is not "Kiai"?

    • @Tirza_
      @Tirza_ 7 лет назад +7

There are two general types of kiai:
      Yuusei no kiai (audible)
      Musei no kiai (inaudible)
Sometimes we use one. Many times we use the other.
In solo kata we traditionally only do Musei no kiai and that is why Õtsuka Sensei never did Yuusei no kiai (audible).
But we still kiai. Kiai does not have to be vocalized with a loud shout.
The general thought is that yuusei no kiai makes you lose your power while musei no kiai helps you channel your kiai towards your opponent.
Although I have to say: you always start training with yuusei no kiai (audiable one). When you go up the ranks for years and years, and internalize your ki, it will probably evolve into a musei no kiai.
This of course doesn't apply to everyone, but it is what I have observed from the Õtsuka Sensei (plural).
I hope this answered your question :)

I see the f in your picture and then read: "why the f is not kiai"

Not even close to the nerve and how natural the movement was performed by Tatsuo Suzuki’s tanto dori and his attacker.

    This is so unreal...

It’s a highly ritualistic way of communicating principles that were developed in a different historic and cultural context. It’s meaning has to be seen in that light. You can’t understand the meaning if you take it things literally. Kind of like poetry. It’s also incredibly beautiful like poetry can be. An overly rationalistic approach misses the point entirely. In reality the only dependable self defence is avoidance through rational thought and intuition.

ahahahah! grown men who still don't know how to tie their Dogi right that they have to hold their pants up!

It's not really about holding up the pants up as in the pants falling, Wado-Ryu's stance is so low that the pants restrict the knees if they are straight, I used to lift them all the time too when I did it. I don't know why nobody deems it important enough to address, Wado-Ryu should have pants that just go down to the knee and are tied there IMO.

Really???? I have been practicing Wado for 30 years and never have to do this, you just have to tie your pants up properly, you do not wear your Dogi pants like normal pants, lift them up closer to your belly button till you can lift your knee freely. And just for the record Wado stances are not 'so low'
