Between 1961 when the first modifications were made and 1990 when the course was overly modified we had a couple of decades when the course was enoumous but essentially fair. The golden age of the once great race. Nowadays it's just a long distance chase with no real challenge in the fences but then it was superb.
Jay Trump WAS very special.; He won two Maryland Hunt Cups, shipped to the UK and took the GN, then headed home to take a third MHC. That was a Very Special horse, indeed. Btw, his '64 MHC was part of a Maryland Hunt Triple sweep along with The My Lady's Manor Hunt and the Maryland Grand National. He was one of two horses to do so, the other being Winton in '42 & '46.
Jay Trump was jockey-legend-turn-trainer Fred Winter's very first Grand National entry. JT was also the second US-bred-owned-ridden horse to win the Grand National (Battleship II was the first, in 1938.)
love jay trump he was an exceptional horse also won the maryland hunt cup 3 times wish he could of had his entire career in england instead of just 1 season think he could of been very special.
There used to be many more Grand National videos. I have watched many of them, but just only once. When I want to watch'em once again, only to find they've been removed due to the copyright claim by Racing UK! Oh God.
I really wanted Sebastian to win in 1978. Maybe it's pointless to speculate, but I'd have been interested to see what would have happened in 1977 if he'd stood up at Becher's. Also, that's brilliant that you met Sebastian. Of course he'd have died by now, but it still made me sad to read that. Also, I always felt Rondetto should have won a National.
slight changes to brollytom race are ref7 colleen star , ref8 groomsman whose jockey duke of alberqurie then falls badly at the same fence french cottage falls f9 then remounts and ref12 mr mctaffy pu16 black spot falls 24 then remounts and falls 27 blond warrior fell28
@samothraki1 I've read an interview with Nedsmar's jockey & the horses shoulder started to give way on the run to Bechers, hence the reason the horse ran off to the left to try & save himself. Therefore NOT the jockeys fault!
..I wish I'd downloaded those BBC 1960's nationals when they were on here. I could kick myself now. This national(65) seems to have gone under UK racing's radar however.
Jay Jay Trump, an American Tb, "racetrack reject"! multi time winner of the Maryland hunt Cup, and Grand National;after this, he returned to win the Hun the hunt cup again; He is buried in the infield at the Kentucky horse park.
..seems to me that the complexion of the race has changed certainly over the last few years.....used to be the ultimate test for jumpers with a premium on jumping....rarely won by the classiest horse but more often than not...by the toughest, bravest horse who could jump....this has been diluted with the softening of the fences over the years....not the race it was....and certainly not the race it was mean't to be.......
The race is rubbish now....no test at all, don't even tune into it now it's so boring...this footage is superb to watch, when it was the national, shame on aintree, sack them all
... sorry all your other Nationals have been removed. Seems as if the spirit of Mirabelle Topham is alive and well, 'No you can't watch the National, it's all mine' - UK Racing or whoever it is who own the copyrights ... grrrr!!!

....nice research......first national I can remember......
What a great introduction to the Grand National for you mate: back when Bechers Brook was a true test of jumping

Great race. Fred Winter is my great-great grandma's nephew.
As a 10-year-old kid from Maryland, Jay Trump's victory with Charlie Fenwick was a huge deal for me. BRIAN
.....totally agree. Just looks like another fence. Did the same last year.

One of the best finishes for the race when it was a race and not the glorified long distance hurdle race it has become.

.....thanks for the info, Brolly.....

Note a reference in commentary to the fact that, at this point (and for many years afterwards), every National could very well have been the last.
Funny how you never see odds like 100/6, 100/7 or 100/8 any more.

The camera angles have hardly changed in over 40 years.
..sorry to hear that.....

rondettas fall at the 26th only devon loch was more baffling
