Who is the boss of you?», a question I have been asking my grandson since he was very young in relation to both all kinds of behaviour and as to how it relates to the use of money. There are many good channels here on RUclips that explore and explain human psychology, including manipulation. One of them is « The School of Life ». As a retired teacher I very much appreciate what you are doing: helping people connect the dots. Believe it or not, I never made an online purchase in my life. Don't even know how it's done. I remember when my older brother bought his first PC back in 1982. I understood that tiny machine would change the shape of world. Looked at it, thought "nah, I'll stick to books". The two don't necessarily contradict each other, but I decided to stay low tech throughout my life, I choose local commerce over global brands, never regret my decision. Your videos provide an invaluable service. I recommend your channel every day.
Thanks for another great video. As long as we stick to needs instead of wants I think we will do fine. You just have to scroll over ads etc., but it is scary that they know so much about us. I live in the Netherlands so we are more protected than you are in the USA but I see this happen here too. I do have a smartphone (prepaid so hardly used except for calls) and that is all, no other smart advices and if I need anything I still prefere to go to a real shop but I only buy something new if the old one is really broken.
Practical people own the future. They will not be persuaded as much in the future by social media or online advertising. It gets quite annoying when I order something online that I want or need and then I immediately get ads for what I essentially just purchased or looked at on a potential e-commerce site. I like the positive potential of social media, but there is a lot of danger and dark rabbit holes that one can stumble upon.
Or when I send someone an "email letter" and a place I've mentioned or an item I've said I'm looking for starts popping up in ads. I get RUclips's in my feed about this place,and I get Facebook ads about this very product. And that's from a casual word I a "private" correspondence! I know nothing online is private. That's why I still send old style letters sometimes.
We can control it. Stop having all these crazy smart things watching you all the time. You can get by on the basics like just a smartphone, block the ads, stop doom scrolling and stop buying rubbish that you don't need.
"the attention merchants" is also a good book, about advertising , psychology, etc. Along with tech monopolies, it also tells about tobacco companies....
Another excellent video Austin! Totally agree. This is one reason I got off of Facebook about three years ago. The other was that it tends to consume a lot of my time. Folks will simply have to learn to be ever more vigilant before they spend their money ( or worse yet, whip out the credit card and get deeper into debt ). For this reason, for example, I don't own smartphone. Actually I don't have any phone at all. I don't need it! And I have no TV. I have only a laptop computer. But the operating system on that laptop is NOT the Windows, but a Linux. And even that Linux is not any official Linux distribution, but it is created by I myself from scratch! I don't use any "smart speaker" or what the heck is the name of that "digital assistant", Siri or Alexa or like that... I do not need a spy into my home... And I have no Facebook account... Neither Twitter or Instagramm... Of course this style of living has something inconvenience, for example when somebody wants I call him, or wants I use "whatsapp" (I don't even know what is the whatsapp...), then I have to say that it is impossible and no possible. I have email account, if somebody wants anything from me seriously, has to write an email and that's it...
To me, it's all beyond creepy. But to the mindless zombies, it's consume consume consume! A refrigerator with WiFi? No thanks. I don't even use Alexa or have social media. I prefer living in real life using as little smart tech as possible.
What I'm uncomfortable with,is that red light on my tv 📺 on all the time when tv off,I remembered growing up,when the tv off it's off,or when im talking to someone google listening n answer. They can even read my mind,when im thinking abt something once I open any app there is the add🙄😳

That money goes to what used to be our national broadcaster but their content is packed full of subtle and insidious coaching,mind training,or even brain washing. They infer by words,I call them code words,and by tones of voice yes really,what your opinion should be on every subject. For instance all before 9/11 the world was full of "freedom fighters". Every night,every news report,lots of countries freedom fighters....after 9/11 they became "insurgents". Defo different vibe to that word. So when Putin went into Chechnya to put down "insurgents" the BBC did their best but we're defo hamstrung without the term "freedom fighters" available to them. I had no tech at all until 2010 when my sister bought my late Mum a tablet so the rest of the family could share pictures with us. My late Mum then was getting immobile and house bound (though we did still get out a bit using the wheelchair taxi firm) but the tablet was just photos,they did visit as well I hasten to add. So I inherited the tablet but apart from the odd google factual enquiry it played little part in my life. Then in October 2020 I had to buy a smartphone in order to use the App for my job! After my Mum left us I had to "get a job" despite being over 60 which I thought was outrageous!!!,I know bad me,and eventually the inevitable happened and the company which employed me from on high instituted an App and it didn't work on my tablet so my sister bought me a smartphone and that's how we all get SUCKED IN. I only had six months to go before I could choose freedom but now my life is just so interwoven into the bloody phone......some important things of my life are ONLY online,and only accessible to me or the other side via online. I'm trapped but I also love aspects of it like Google maps,when the next bus is due,is there a nearby coffee shop. I often wonder about the more politically radical RUclips channels (eg., Russell Brand, Jimmy Dore, The Grayzone) and why, if the internet is so smart, these channels aren't being taken down. Darker thoughts lead me to wonder if RUclips isn't tracking subscribers, viewers, or viewer comments and creating dossiers on them, for potentially nefarious reasons. More than 10 years ago I bought a series of books by the arguably anarchist author Derrick Jensen and I can see plainly that Amazon still has a record of it. Should I be concerned about this fact? Maybe sending us a targeted ad for a bathing suit because Instagram knows we recently joined a gym is the LEAST of our worries; glad I don't own a Roomba (LOL). If Facebook amd Google are so successful at targeting ads for me, then why are all the ads so completely irrelevant to what I actually want? Literally, their accurcy is terrible. Worse than old TV commercials, tbh. I'm not making this up. The sad fact is that I search out the products I want to buy. They may be influenced from videos on RUclips or FB groups (forums, in the past) but that is not driven by tech companies. All of this seems a lot darker than it currently is. I still don't like them collecting my data, but if they're going to tey to sell me stuff, the least they could do is be, you know, accurate😂

A socio-economic system based on private property rights, including the private ownership of resources or capital, with economic decisions made largely through the operation of a market unregulated by the state. The opposite of Capitalism is Socialism. Socialism is where the State owns everything and economic decisions are made largely through a committee. Surveillance Capitalism is when entrepreneurs collection information to sell a product. How can you defend against this? Buy what you value.
RUclips commercials are so bad with me. The ad are meaningless and their questions are not relivent. I think all my passing interests seems to confuse RUclips. How cookies work is far less complex... You look at a jacket. The cookie know the URL you click on.... So when you visit another websites you will keep seeing adverts for that jacket. If you put the tv on a surge protector and turn it off when not using. Saves electricity and it cant listen on your conversations

I got a goal for acting so I notice my ads from Facebook are not really good. I think having goals and working will help you avoid to be manipulate

The opposite of Capitalism is Socialism. Socialism is where the State owns everything and economic decisions are made largely through a committee.

They are not going to know when you are on a date or when you are feeling vulnerable. - That crazy talk. How cookies work is far less complex... You look at a jacket. The cookie know the URL you click on.... So when you visit another websites you will keep seeing adverts for that jacket. It exactly the same as a television commercial you see the same commercials repeatedly. Cookies are no different.
To stop a given ad or ads, just delete your web history including the data from your browser
