I got a Funcub NG today as my second plane, bought the Radio Ready version, and got the Flash 7 Transmitter, aswell as the Optima 7 reciever. I’m so exited to fly it, I can’t wait!

Fully agree with you, 500$ is a ridiculous price tag for that plane, considering what else you can get for the money. Here in Germany, you can get it for way less, but still too expensive IMHO. (We‘re having the same issues with FMS planes. Prices are in € AND like 30% on top due to import. So, crashing them hurts even more 😆). For some strange reason, the Fun Cub NG is super cute still. Awesome flying, Jon, as always! It makes a big difference if you ‚pretend‘ to fly in a confined area (cruising on an open field, but in tight turns), or if the obstacles are really there threatening you all the time.
I took one and moved my rudder amd elevator servos to push pull config with 6 in long control rods and i took the plastic wing joiner and removed thr dihederal of wing and sanded it to a symmetrical airfoil...thrn put a billet firewall and carbon gear ...also put savox servos in it with 1.25 arms for more throw amd resolution...it hived the cg back and it flies arobatics beautifully....only added 3 oz and its powered by a torque 2820 with 45 amp... super fun plane

Wow, this video sure burst the bubble image I had of the Fun Club. I had drunk the Fun Cub Kool-Aide and thought, until watching your video, that the Cub had to be the end-all of RC bush planes. I understand that you didn't put down the Fun Cub but just put things in perspective from your point of view. Thanks.
It's pretty good. It's just not perfect. The gear are especially weak. While the gear strut will never break, it bends horribly under front loads - like hitting a tree root. The snap back will throw the wheel into the prop. The lack of stiffness will also cause prop strikes. If memory serves, the Fun Cub ate up three different 13x4 props in the making of this vid. Timber was flown in the same spaces and is still using the same propeller.
I love my funcub NG.

Would love to see you run the new Tundra through the same test and while your at it rip your Kingfisher out for a blast. I love my FMS super easy running 4s and 40amp esc but could do with flaps. Nice and light and responsive. Cheers.

Definitely try the FunCub NG, I have one and it's very beginner friendly and has a much more responsive tail and also a lot better landing gear.

So I’ve owned the turbo timber evo and I much prefer the FMS super Cub 1700. It’s very floaty and a riot to fly from land and water. I know you’ve flown the 1.3M but I would be very curious to hear your thoughts on the 1.7m! Great content as always I’d like to try a fun cub some day

@@user-ln6hf2zr5b We'd need another one to run it through its paces. Can't really give ya an estimate either, it's been too long since we flew it. Kingfisher is great, though, don't let a potential score or some arbitrary wing loading number scare you away from it!

Nice flying Jon. Personally I love Fun Cubs...I've owned 3 of them but never kept them for some reason. I have a line on a OG NIB that will be my 4th. On the FC thread on RCG there is a gear mod (you add a 2nd wire) that makes a world of difference. What is interesting is that the FC started the whole RC foam bush plane genre. Timbers, Tundras, the OG CZ Cub, and a few other early ones were designed to do what the FC did but look cooler doing it, lol. That was around 10 years ago, and the genre is still going strong. As the genre has added features and convenience...they have gotten heavier. Can't add that stuff without that happening. That said, for the way I want to fly a foam sport/bush plane...and frankly considering the features I also prefer...the Super Timber is the best one out there for me. Still though...its gonna be cool to have a feather light FC to mess around with again too. Great vid man. Well done!

@@TwoBrosRC may had been timing I'm no where near skilled a pilot as you but I can hold my own. I got a funcub in great condition but had alot of electrical gremlins going in and the electronics on these under the wing are tiny tiny and I really didn't feel like tearing into it and seemed like a tedious plane to work on the internals so I let it go. I wanted to love it, maybe I'll find another one and try one day.

FINALLY THE FUNCUB VIDEO! Fantastic! Though I must say I politely disagree with 4:12 in the video. The timbers performance seems similar because this space still isnt tight enough to show the difference in agility. The funcub can fly in even tighter spaces, ive even flown it indoors in a single basketball court (standard flying, not hovering. Not just circles either. I was able to maneuver around), as well as numerous other places I would never even consider sending the timber as it would be suicidal with a timber. The timber can fly in very tight areas yes, I dont disagree with that. But the funcub can go tighter than shown. When flying in spaces large enough (relatively speaking) to fly a timber, the timber does indeed suffer less from wind. But if youre flying in extremely confined areas like dense forests with few-no clearings, you dont want to do it in much wind anyway, so the FunCub easily wins out because of its superior agility and gentler stalls (plus you can more easily run after it 😅), enabling it to fly where the timber cant. The FunCub is a plane you can turn extremely tight, steep, and slow without worry, making mistakes less likely, and if you do crash, itll survive unscathed. Whereas with the Timber its more intimidating to load up the wings in a steep, slow turn since it has much nastier stall characteristics, making mistakes due to anxiety or simply stalling more likely. Aerobatics though are another story, I'd choose the Timber for aerobatics without a doubt, it tumbles much better and has way less yaw coupling. If im going for nothing but all out insane bush performance for the tightest of flying spots, i choose FunCub, but if i want to do a mix of bush flying and 3D, in a slightly wider space, i fly the timber. Long story short, if it's large enough to fly a timber in, the timber probably wins, for the reasons you mentioned, more gust resistance, plus aerobatic capabilities. But the FunCub shines at being able to fly in places so obscenely tight that a timber would struggle.
A single basketball court is significantly larger than the area in 4:12. The opening the two planes are being flown through is about 7ft wide by 5ft tall, with a corridor that's roughly 10ft wide with the various trees and bushes taken into account. When attempting to fly the Fun Cub in even narrower areas, the flimsy gear cause issues like flipping over into the creek. It's not a bad plane by any means, it's just not perfect.
@@TwoBrosRCyou turned it around over a lake. Flying straight through a tight gap isn't what I'm referring to. It's impressive don't get me wrong, but I'm referring to flying in areas with NO clearings. A timber cannot u-turn in a basketball court with ease. Sustained, long duration flight with no clearings is more testing of agility than flying through gaps. I mean no shade by this, it's a fantastic video and great flying, I'm just saying flying through straight gaps doesn't highlight the FunCub's agility, which is its main edge over the timber. That doesn't make it perfect though. I've personally never had my gear explode like that, but the tailwheel is definitely another weak point. It WILL fail eventually, only a matter of time. And its aerobatic capabilities aren't nearly as good. The timber is overall more well rounded, but the FunCub is better at agility and strength, which really matters when flying in areas that are simply too small for the minimum turn radius of the timber. Because if you can't turn around, you can't really fly at all. Anywhere you can fly a timber, the timber is probably better, but the FunCub comes to play when it's too tight a space even for the timber

The straight gap segment was put there to demonstrate how similar the two airframes are in navigating a tight space with wind. It's one thing to handle a confined spot with no hoops to jump through - or a basketball court with no wind. It's a real challenge to get a floaty plane into a narrow window and land without hitting obstacles.

To clarify, for many things I'd pick the timber. It's more well rounded and more aerobatic by far, the FunCub just takes the cake for me when going to the most extreme of locations. For many extreme spots the Timber would do just fine, and thus the other pros associated with it might make it the better pick. But the FunCub is the best when you need even MORE slow flight performance than the Timber, which admittedly most bush flyers won't need. That additional performance is really only needed for the most ungodly bush flying spots 😂, so for most users: Timber, but for obsessed bush crackheads needing nothing but max agility: FunCub 😂. The basketball court example was just to highlight turn radius, it's by no means my favorite flying spot, though I'd love to try flying it out the court doorways and turning through the halls without landing. I know it can do it, but I'd hate to prop cut the walls and paintings, so I haven't yet. For tight flying I usually go to the forest by my apartment or parks. There's some other dense areas I've flown in where there's virtually no sky, and it gets dark. Those areas have no clearings to turn in (or I choose to avoid them in the name of challenge 😂), are far tighter than the basketball court, and have a TON of fun but dangerous obstacles and gaps to fly through, some of which have low hanging branches making it more like a tunnel. It's constant weaving through a tree slalom course, relying on depth perception and sometimes even rough dead reckoning to estimate when to make the turn into the gaps. Turning around in this sort of environment with obstacles EVERYWHERE is where I think the FunCub shines best. There are some spots in the forest I COULD take the Timber, but it would be much more difficult and more likely to break a motor mount if I crash, making it not as feasible as the FunCub in those spots. And in some spots it just flat out wouldn't make it. But admittedly, few people are crackheaded enough to do this, so most wouldn't need the extra agility, and would probably better go for the other perks found in the Timber (lights, 3D, tailwheel, Floats, etc). Though there is something to be said for other FunCub shenanigans like landing on picnic tables, cars, or other stupid stuff you can have fun doing without the fear of breaking it due to the durability of the FunCub. Sorry that was long lol, as you can see I like FunCubs, Tailheavy Productions may have gotten to me 😂

maybe there are different batches, but my Funcub OG is extremely brittle, like EPS from the hardware store, absolutely not comparable to the a FC NG or similar.

N0! Put the $500 towards a plane(s) actually worth the money Jon; my opinion. I just don't get it. Tail- Heavy says it's worth every penny but seems so cheaply made and overpriced compared to my FMS Super Cub 1300mm PNF with Nav lights and a gyro for $180. I reached out to HiTec to consider offering it in the US at a reasonable price ($200 area) but never got any kind of response back.

For a 3 cell plane, yeah, it's pretty absurdly overpriced when Timbers exist stateside. They aren't as light, but you can modify them to be far more capable than they are in stock form. Which is kinda what you have to do to make a Fun Cub worth flying like this, anyhow.
We'd still like to see them sold stateside at a reasonable price. $300ish for a Fun Cub NG would be way more acceptable.
In Europe you can buy NG versions as a kit for about $160 and pnf versions for about $320, I put mine together having a few parts for about $220 - these are good prices, quality and design are significantly different from Chinese aircraft (I'm talking about the NG version)
