i'm 34. Mom n Dad were born in 1952. I was raised on Doo Wop and Motown. I love this song, and genre, and time period so much....I love my 80s rock and heavy metal. I love reggae and ska. but man the 50's were an amazing time for music!

Born in 1985 but I had older cousins and such, parents born in 57 and 59, significantly raised with my grandparents, and Ive always loved older music. Looking at the cars and listening to the music, I cant imagine what it must have been like to grow up in the 50s and 60s!

Some times, for no understandable reason, a just plain average guy like me sees that dream lover. She is the most beautiful girl ever. And he risks it all and goes up to her and says hi. Married 45 years next week. She is still my dream lover and the most beautiful 74 year old girl ever. We both love Bobby and his music. What a blessed man I am.

No. But Our Lord blessed us with each other and a strong love and commitment to He and each other. So do you still have time? Yes lots, pray for Gods guidance.@@onepieceguy2659

Happy to know that generations now and future generations after me will get to enjoy this beautiful love ballad.

Every night I hope and pray
A dream lover will come my way
A girl to hold in my arms
And know the magic of her charms
    'Cause I want (yeah-yeah, yeah)
    A girl (yeah-yeah, yeah)
    To call (yeah-yeah, yeah)
    My own (yeah-yeah)
    I want a dream lover
So I don't have to dream alone
    Dream lover, where are you
With a love, oh, so true
And the hand that I can hold
To feel you near as I grow old
    'Cause I want (yeah-yeah, yeah)
    A girl (yeah-yeah, yeah)
    To call (yeah-yeah, yeah)
    My own (yeah-yeah, yeah)
    I want a dream lover
So I don't have to dream alone
    Someday, I don't know how
I hope she'll hear my plea
Some way, I don't know how
She'll bring her love to me
    Dream lover, until then
I'll go to sleep and dream again
That's the only thing to do
'Til all my lover's dreams come true
    'Cause I want (yeah-yeah, yeah)
    A girl (yeah-yeah, yeah)
    To call (yeah-yeah, yeah)
    My own (yeah-yeah, yeah)
    I want a dream lover
So I don't have to dream alone
    Dream lover, until then
I'll go to sleep and dream again
That's the only thing to do
'Til all my lover's dreams come true
    'Cause I want (yeah-yeah, yeah)
    A girl (yeah-yeah, yeah)
    To call (yeah-yeah, yeah)
    My own (yeah-yeah)
    I want a dream lover
So I don't have to dream alone
Please don't make me dream alone
I beg you don't make me dream alone
No, I don't wanna dream alone

I was born in 1950, a perfect time for music. In my life we had all the 50’s groups, Bobby Darin, Elvis, then I was a teen with the Beatles, Stones, Beach Boys , Petula Clark and Leslie Gore, Simon and Garfunkel, all the British pop groups, then late teens-20’s, we had the Doors, Led Zeppelin, then Elton John and on and on, not to mention all the heavy rock of the sixties, seventies, I could go on forever , R & B, Ray Charles, Aretha …. Then the fun disco stuff from the 80’s. I think my time caught it all, country western, Motown, rock, top 40s. I feel so lucky…

My family left Arkansas in 1952 and moved to central California. Every summer, when school let out for the next ten years we returned to visit our Arkansas family. I remember sitting on a cousin's twin bed one hot, muggy afternoon, surrounded by a dozen or more male cousins--listening as "Dream Lover" played over-and-over on the record player. Swooning as we listened to every word, we talked of girls, cars, and our favorite songs. To this day, when I hear this song, I am taken back to that day in Osceola, Arkansas, when life was simple, the promise of love sweet; when every boy dreamed of one day finding that "Dream Lover."

Every night I hope and pray
A dream lover will come my way
A girl to hold in my arms
And know the magic of her charms
    'Cause I want
    A girl
    To call
    My own
    I want a dream lover
So I don't have to dream alone
    Dream lover, where are you
With a love, oh, so true
And the hand that I can hold
To feel you near as I grow old
    'Cause I want
    A girl
    To call
    My own
    I want a dream lover
So I don't have to dream alone
    Someday, I don't know how
I hope she'll hear my plea
Some way, I don't know how
She'll bring her love to me
    Dream lover, until then
I'll go to sleep and dream again
That's the only thing to do
Till all my lover's dreams come true
    'Cause I want
    A girl
    To call
    My own
    I want a dream lover
So I don't have to dream alone
    Dream lover, until then

I think I FINALLY figured out (mind you, I have been listening to this song since it was first on the radio in early 1959) who is playing those great Fender Jazzmaster riffs all through this song, and I believe it to be Roy Lanham, a jazz guitarist who, as I understand it, was in with Leo Fender and received what was probably the very first commercial Jazzmaster ever produced. And IT was the first ever recorded and it was used in THIS song! Headphones would be left channel, with piano in the right.
And NOW, this has 124M views and 558 thousand thumbs up. Now THAT is an enduring hit.

Taken as a whole, I get it. But this record is anything but "simple." There's a lot going on here. The slightly dissonant high pitched piano notes right at the intro for one. Multiple key changes for two. A lot of inspiration, thought and aural imagination went into the production of this record. Listen to the background, the various instrumental and vocal sounds upon which Bobby Darrin's voice floats.

This guy was one of music's big losses. He could write and perform songs of great variety and style. They say music and smell can conjure up a memory. Whenever I hear this I remember this song playing on the N.A.A.F.I jukebox at R.A.F. Cosford in 1960 as I walked past and the smell of newly cut grass - or if I smell newly cut grass I remember the song. I was 16.

@Oscar Arnesen The music of the era was too diverse; sounds coming off the radio were new and different. Every song didn't repeat every other song. But check these out and see if they scratch the itch: 'Dreamin'' Johnny Burnett; "When My Little Girl Is Smiling" the Drifters; "Runaway'" Del Shannon; "Take Good Care of My Baby" Bobby Vee; "She's Everything (I Wanted You To Be)" Ral Donner; "Baby, I Need Your Loving" Four Tops; "Every Breath I Take" Gene Pitney...

One of my favorite quotes of all time, by Neil Young:"I used to be pissed off at Bobby Darin because he changed styles so much (rock n roll, country, swing, jazz, show tunes, folk, easy listening, spirituals, ballads, protest songs, blues, film scores). Now I look at him and think he was a darn genius.Mack the Knife was cool. But it was almost a distraction, cause it was such a radical change and you were goin: Hey wait a minute. This is really good, but who is this now- is this the same guy? What the hell just happened? That's the first artist I can remember where you're goin...Well, shit - he just changed. He's completely different. And he's really into it. Doesn't sound like he's not there.Dream Lover, Simple Song Of Freedom, Queen of the Hop, Splish Splash - tell me about those records, Mr. Darin. Did you write those all the same day? He just changed so much. Just kinda went from one place to another. Completely different sounds. So it's hard to tell who Bobby Darin really was."

One of my favorite songs from my father's collection. It brings back memories of pursuing a girl I really wanted to be with, in high school. This song was heavily on my mind then, and when we finally hooked up, it felt magical.
Most teens today will never experience those magical moments, because today's culture is too perverse, and robs them of the purity of just falling in love.

    I was 8
    2 teenage sisters
    a small portable record player
    spinning 45's
    the dream was real
    they would drag
    me into their room
    to "practice" dancing
    I hated it
    8 years later
    I was thanking them
    and my love of life
    now has no bounds
    the harmony
    of living energy
    is distilled to joy
    our music sets it free
