Bridge made up of flatbed trailers keeps NC, TN supply chain alive

- The winding and damaged roads on the mountain near Elk Park have made travel by regular cars and trucks almost impossible.
That’s why neighbors are using ATVs, or side-by-sides, to get from their homes to their community aid station that sits on top of the mountain.
They’re also using them to deliver supplies to those who need help in the neighboring towns of Butler and Elk Mills in Tennessee, about 15 minutes away by ATV.

This is brilliant. The men that created this bridge deserve an award.
They have made these for years where I live.. folks buy property need a bridge, buy old cheap flatbed..drop it in place with some anchorage and presto. I have also seen flatbed train cars, but those folks were kinda snooty :)
My uncle used a trailer to bridge two pieces of land
They probably will be fined for illegal parking.
Love to see the creativity in that bridge and the people working together!!!
Now that’s what I call Hillbilly engineering, Great Job!!!
I came here looking for this comment. Say what you will about hillbillies, but when the ish hits the fan, they will figure it out.
Absolutely brilliant and creative on that bridge, you are heroes to your own communities.
Where ther's a will, There's a way. When the tragedy hits close to home, good neighbors stand tall. God bless these communities as they work to restore their normal lives.
Thinking outside of the box! Love this for their community.
Creativity. Git 'er done!!!! This is the America I love. Get through...no matter what it takes. we're right on the virginia side of 64.; absolutely blocked for the foreseeable future. We're three hours north. Spoke to two groups of people in town here yesterday and they are driving down with carloads taking alternate routes. Those are 4 wheel drive /off roading vehicles because issues are expected. Strong, young people. Our neighborhood here is not so unlike those affected...... but at a higher elevation. Retired people, disabled, trailers, old wooden houses on a mountainside with few routes in, or out. Creeks that are usually stable, until you dump a billion gallons of water into them. People are raising animals and growing crops out of necessity; and don't easily abandon their property. what people aren't heavily affected are scraping together what they can spare. Primary stuff; water and food(including produce); and secondary stuff...blankets, clothing, kitchen items, lumber for rebuilding. Everyone has one or two things they can add; though many are on social security and disability. we need to get some kind of vehicular "bucket brigade" to move goods coming from farther away. Can't wait for the government to set it up, wE have to get in there! NO ONE can afford to pay "administrative costs" to agencies. They're going to need more than $750 to come BACK from this. Loose cattle/horses/etc. can be fostered until a return is possible; but they need to be moved from the site if there is no farm to return TO. Once it's stabilized a bit.....livestock. At LEAST chickens and goats. They will produce food the fastest. Spring: they're going to need seeds, saplings....we're not there yet but we have to have an ONGOING plan to get them back to function. The people who relied on crops and livestock are destitute for the winter. That kind of stuff is on us now. Come on now, we have always prided ourself on our "team spirit" Let's put that to USE.
God bless these amazing people, sending prayers from Australia
It just goes to show that you need to rely on yourself and community before you put your trust in the government.
Fema probably like, you can't do that it's unsafe.
Prayers to you all From Guam USA!!!
Thank God for the wisdom and brain use of semi-flatbed trailers...❤
Great minds they have to build that bridge.Be safe and thanks for all you do
I hope that asst fire chief doesn't see this ,he'll arresting everyone in sight
Very cool bridge, when need be they become creative. Good luck to everyone affected and those helping out.
Great job folks.Good luck.
Citizens built the bridge, not the government.
No one denies that. You genius you.
@@Wayzor_ I'm here at ground zero, where are you? Hiding in your parents basement I guess.
@@Wayzor_
Neither did he say that anyone's denying it..
Iinguistics might not be your strong point.
@@Wayzor_ I was just in Erwin, a friend of mine lives in Elizabethton, his place flooded.
I'll be in Newport in about 30 minutes.
Best of luck and God's speed. Mr. Jamie!!!
Remember that locals/non government workers did that, not any government agency!!!
That’s generally how it’s done. While it’s nice to see it’s nice to see. When my state of Vermont was flooded last summer it was mostly locals taking care of things. Especially the local excavators and local road crews. The feds came in later for the actual bridge rebuilds.
And everyone there will still welcome GOVERNMENT assistance. It will take government money to build a proper bridge. Government (our representative democracy) is made up of us. We are the government, and that's a good thing.
Ask not what your country can do for you-ask what you can do for your country.”
Local firefighters helped. And a lot.of the supplies bring brought in are from FEMA and the North Carolina and Tennessee states governments.
While they're working together you seem determined not to help but to use this as an opportunity to hate government employees that are literally there right now helping.
@brad238899 yeah, there to tell locals they'll get arrested if they help and then funneling the money to illegal immigrants. The government doesn't do 1/10th of what it should do when a disaster like this happens. Sorry you're so entrenched in politics you refuse to call out your government overlords when they turn their back on the American people. Typical Democrat, always obfuscating and gas lighting and never holding their own side accountable.
Recommend procurement of Oxcarts for the ATVs and side by sides. The trailers can carry an additional 400 lbs of supplies and can easily handle rugged terrain.
Most ATV's suck at towing anything. (very little power and no torque.) Horses mules, and farm tractors. I've seen a few cases of "mule trains" getting stuff up the mountain - where a SxS can't go. (reminded me of scenes from the walking dead.)
I can only think of the song by Wynona " Love Can Build a Bridge" as i watch my fellow man help one another. God bless all of those out here helping.🧡🙏
City people make fun of hillbillies but in a disaster the hillbillies will survive and the City people would starve before they figured out how to help themselves
Fema should take notes from this video on how to get moving and build a relief force to help people and communities!
REally ingeneous.
Using flatbeds as a bridge is genius level for thinking outside of the box.
What a great solution
This is true Americans doing what needs to be done! Not waiting for someone else to do it for them!
MICAH!!! Congrats on your new gig. Will miss you covering the No Gotion story in Big Rapids/Green Charter Twp area.
Great coverage on this video.
What a GOOD man!
The military should be helping our people in the usa
I like the design and the grit. Man didnt need to be told what to do.
Rugged people; great Americans!
Awesome. Sending prayers of strength and hope❤🙏🕯👍🛡
Wow. That is wonderful. 💕🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Well ya use what ya got 👍
Git 'er done, I believe is the term....❤❤❤❤🫂
God bless all these people! 🙏🤍🩷🧡❤️💚🩵💙💜
Genius, I have also made them out of railroad car beds, the best load rated instant bridges.... keep on keeping on
love it. So where are Army engineers? Still waiting for orders? Freaking disgrace.
Ask the governors about that. They're the ones in control of their states national guard and responsible for requesting help from the federal government. Not sure if it's because they haven't had a disaster for awhile but things take time, people forget that theyre supposed to have a few weeks of supplies stocked up for storms ir other emergencies. Can't fix everything at once.
The US government as a whole is a disgrace. Has been majority of our lives
People are smarter than the government
Hillbilly engineering. Ya gotta love it.
Brilliant solution!
We’ve used flatbed train cars in my part of town , it’s all about what’s available
Who needs the govt!? We have done ALL this by ourselves.
Beautiful
Bless them all
What the enemy meant for evil, Father turned it around for the good. Faith has been this country's bedrock and hopefully it will be it's return to greatness!
Thank u !!!!!!!!
Humanity time...🙏
Que Mala has more money for other countries than for US!
SO IMPRESSED!!!
Americans taking care of its own!!!❤❤❤❤❤
All those downed trees: a few guys with some chainsaws, a come along and some bolts might be able to get a bridge made.
Well done for what they did.
Who edited this? Blink and you miss the bridge.
Interesting to see the VP fuel drums...
What? FEMA has not ordered it removed yet?
Army float bridges, would be great help
They prob sent those to Ukraine.
I have been wondering why these haven’t been deployed
@@donnab5071 Sure did. How's that war going Pootie?
A country boy can survive
Wish this wasnt in the news, now chief melton has released a statement saying the bridge is illegal and all users can be charged with vnadalism 😢
Fema will be there to seize the bridge soon
Clever!!
Remember hillbillies will survive and using trailers to make a bridge is fantastic
This is the time for government to do what is being done there: Get out of the way
It isn't a contest numbnuts. Locals and government agencies such as FEMA as well as the National Guard are working together to recover. Sorry to rain on your government hating parade. But there are literally government employees there helping at this very moment while you're doing nothing but laying in bed playing on your phone.
Fema? Military troops? I didn't see them anywhere.
Anybody remember when liberals used to call doomsday preppers " far- right extremists"?
Yep, that was just before the hurricane.
Honey? "prepping" is a scale. MOST people living in the areas away from the city have some preparations for disaster. That's not really a bipartisan thing? Truly. My brother has a month's worth of food and enough weapons and ammo for a small army for six months. That is more particularly my point. ABSOLUTELY prep for disasters that are common for your region. Probaby A (one) gun. Store things that will be useful in a emergency. Yes, gun-approving, prep approving democrat. we are NOT divided by a single line. We have so MUCH in common it's ridiculous. I am so proud to see people out helping people REGARDLESS of whose sign is on the lawn. we can deal with the political discussion AFTER everyone is helped. Right now? Just be a good human being. Help whenever you can. Can we duke this out in November? Right now...all hands on deck. ❤❤🫂🫂👍👍
FEMA would have said no to the bridge
FEMA and the National Guard have been working around the clock to help North Carolina and Tennessee at this very moment while you're playing on your phone. What have you done to help these people? Just hang out at home and insult the agencies while these government employees are actually doing work on the ground at this very moment?
@brad238899 😂😂😂😂😂😂 Says the guy doing the same exact thing. Boots on the ground confirm that FEMA is a hindrance..........
Whatever it takes , we may not be able to rely on the government anymore
The national guard posted a video 12 days ago of them air sling loading a pontoon bridge into the water directly from a Chinook FOR TRAINING. They can't show up?!???????(??!!????
American ingenuity
Nice , it will only be a few years before everything is fixed.
WHERE is the guy in a row boat with a fox and two chickens???
Generators with fuel or solar before the cold weather comes.
Where are the feds?
Imagine what military engineers could do when they get there…. Oh wait they aren’t going. Thanks Brandon
Doesn’t that look like it’s the citizens organizing this? Didn’t see FEMA, didn’t see NG? Didn’t see anyone from the feds or the state.. just people who have lost everything trying to help each other.
They're around, but a tiny 2min local news clip didn't bother to show them. (just like it doesn't show the hundreds of volunteer helicopters flying stuff around, or the NG clearing roads.)
The true Amercan spitir!
Hey if it works it works
Days Gone
EPA will not like your bridge
If Milton comes ashore in that area how much will wash away "again" ? Are they changing the building codes for flooded areas or just like florida go ahead and build again and watch it float away again ? The high water mark should be the NEW NO BUILD ZONE ! Otherwise your doing the same thing over again expecting different results, aka insanity ! I pray for those affected but also am tired of paying higher home insurance so these people can live in a flood zone. Watch out MILTON is coming and whether you believe in climate change or not milton is only days from helene what about next year or the next ten years. Time for a wake up call from Mother Earth and she will b slap you hard if your not ready...Thoughts and Prayers to you all. Oh and Bravo to Wal Mart for the 60 truck loads sent to the Asheville area, Thats what I call doing God's Work. Where are all the mega pastors donating and all the millionaire sports players, country music stars, take a lead from Wal Mart and get busy ! Just ask yourself "What Would Jesus Do" ? "Feed My Sheep" he told Peter when asked "Peter do you love me"? "Feed My Sheep" !!!
👏👏👏
Where is the Democrats, where is FEMA, our government has failed
Don't the military have bridges they could use their
Cool
Where is the help from the Biden’s , Why are there no loads of aid coming in.
Change the town’s name to Ukraine.they will instantly receive billions
👏🏽👏🏼👏🏾👏👏🏿
Love to see this ❤ finally
They need fossil fuel and generators.
1:03 - the devastation is so horrible!
Couple rides by on touring motorcycle.
The LAST thing they need is "tourists" to cluck tongues at the devistation. If you're going down there, LOAD UP! Save the "hopes and prayers" and take some food and water!!!!!!!! If you need to film it for posterity....ride on a truck taking supplies in, and get ready to get PHYSICAL to work for that footage. Get footage of you actually cutting trees, clearing debris, shoveling mud. I don't want to see your talking head there, offering NO HELP.
Photo opp!
just ask russia.
Reminder to everyone in NC: Lindsey Graham has gone on record as caring more about Israel then anyone suffering and dying due to this disaster. Remember that.
VP Harris just promised more money to Lebanon at a campaign stop where Lebanese population is large and pledged less to Americans suffering and dying due to this disaster. Remember that.
We can't vote him out though, he's from Lesser Carolina
🙌🙌🙌💪💪💪💪💪💪🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
gee and fema can'+ do +his? says much abou+ fema.
That bridge does not comply with building codes and regulations. I'm pretty sure FEMA will tear it down. Rules are more important than people in this country.
I'm surprised the fema people haven't made them tear it down. Awesome engineering. If they can get two more to marry up next to it, should be strong enough to get a backhoe or small dozer in there. Those trailers are rated for at least 60 thousand each.
Mountain everglades all these places was not meant for human to lived !
Your grammar is not meant to be read.
Okay then.. Where ARE we supposed to live?
Ok city boy. Whatever.
Huh?
Should be prepared and you tough guys wouldn’t need saving
Something tells me you wouldn't last a day, kid.
Wow, what stupidity. In the first place no matter how prepared you are there are still things out of your control. Water flowing down mountain side, landslides, 20 inches of rain are just a few.
Why have silly cat fights over ignorant petty stuff. Are you children or grownups……………makes me wonder.
Just shut the hell up big mouth!
We didn’t Need Government when we left England who was trying to oppress us, we DONT need this no do Government NOW...WE, THESE PEOPLE CAN DO MUCH BETTER Without Their interference.... the old saying...if you can’t Help US GET OUT Of OUR WAY....🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
