  • Retro games hold a special place in many players heart’s, they are reminders of simpler times for video games, when arcades were still popular, game magazines with guides were a thing and Blockbuster was the place you’d go to rent movies and games.
This nostalgia combined with the discontent for the current state of triple AAA gaming, has made it so indie developers begun to develop retro styled games and some of them are some of the most successful games of the past decade, such as Undertale, Deltarune, Jump King, Shovel Knight, Terraria, Crypt of The Necrodancer, Hotline Miami, Dead Cells, Enter the Gungeon and Vampire Survivor.
Some developers went even further by releasing their retro games not only for the newer consoles and PC, but also for old consoles that were discontinued many years ago. In this video, we take a look at some of these new games released for old consoles and discuss the reasoning for the growth of the market for retro games.

Wind Scene has always been an immediate nostalgia trip for me, but it does hit a bit harder right now, not gonna lie.

This is so cool, what a great time to be alive as a gamer. When I was young there wasn't many games to play, we have crazy options now you can never run thru all of them

It was like that for me as well. I had two Sonic games and two sports games for the longest time as a kid. Any other game I wanted to play I would have to either play at a friend's house or an arcade machine at a kid's party (That's how I nearly completed Donkey Kong Country back then).
Thankfully we live in a time where nearly any niche can be fulfiilled and a lot of things have been made much easier. Crowdfunding helps a lot. These projects are only possible thanks to it.

I remember back in December I saw a video of upcoming Mega Drive games... for 2024! I was like "what?, New games, for a 30 year old console...?"! Good timing for that new AV cable for my old Mega Drive II/Mega CD II Combi then, eh? Then we had the Retro Games Fair here and I rebought Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles along with the Mega Games 2 and 3 Collections (I already had 1, as well as Sonic and Sonic 2)! I'd also previously bought Altered Beast, so... Didn't really find any worthwhile Mega CD games, though, unfortunately... really wanted Dungeon Master II again...

I came across the topic when looking for video game characters based on Musashi. One of the games was SNK's Ganryu, which was released as an arcade game in 1999, but was also released for the Dreamcast in 2017, which was way past the Dreamcast's official life cycle. It made me curious to see how many games were released in other consoles that were discontinued long ago and I was honestly surprised to see how many there are and how I never heard about this niche before.
There are so many in fact, that it would take way too long to fit most of them into a concise video while also capturing footage myself. It's really cool to see how factors such as crowdfunding, emulation and an overall increase of accessibility have made it viable for developers to make games like these.

I wonder what country you’re from? Living abroad during the fifth console generation in some countries is odd when comparing memories to Americans. Playstation totally squashed Nintendo 64, and in fact the big N was even behind Sega Saturn. I don’t know anyone who owned an N64 and more than three games, usually Mario 64, Zelda 64 and a crappy football game.

Overall, the Playstation took over the international market indeed. Nintendo's pricing policy has always been an issue outside the US and Japan, even to this day. Combined with the factor of the game library that you mentioned, PS really came on top as the best "bang for your buck" deal.
