- A Virtual Tour of the guided missile destroyer USS Jack H. Lucas (DDG 125), the Navy’s first Flight III destroyer. DDG 125 is named for Pfc. Jack Lucas, who served in the U.S. Marines during World War II, earning the Medal of Honor for his heroism at Iwo Jima, when he was just 17 years old. The Flight III upgrade is centered on the AN/SPY-6(V)1 Air and Missile Defense Radar and incorporates upgrades to the electrical power and cooling capacity.

GET'EM NAVY!!!
Was too short! How many ships in the Navy are equipped with FLIGHT III??
17
Since Phalanx CIWS is missing in front of the bridge, I assume the ship is still waiting for Laser Weapon System. Why didn't navy install RIM-116 on the platform while they wait for new laser?
Hopefully flight 3 will have enough power for both AN/SPY-6 and the future laser system.
Yeah that empty spot in front of the bridge stands out like a sore thumb. One of the first things I noticed.
Brian Petway, related to Robert Petway the blues singer?

Looking good guys, stay safe out there. I was a little surprised when he said the 5" gun is used as an anti-aircraft gun. I mean, I'm sure it works, I just haven't seen it. I want to see one in a training exercise shoot down a drone.
The 5 inch batteries were used as AA (actually as multipurpose, anti-surface and anti-air) even on battleships during WWII. Today’s 5 inch gun systems are derived from those 5/38s of old.
@@F-Man Yeah, I mean, it makes sense. It's just a little funny, or hard to believe, depending on what exactly is meant by an antiaircraft capability. I just think it would be cool to see in action, like: the gun shoots, and then you super zoom to see a tiny spec in the sky, being a jet flying very far away, and then you see it explode. Making a shot like that would be impressive to see.
Realistically, I'm sure it's a thing where, it plays its part in layers of defense, somewhere between CIWS and SM-6, and electronic warfare. There have to be various constraints on the gun in terms of what job it could do; range, speed, etc., probably a lot of things, and probably a lot of those details need to be kept a secret. Part of why you don't see video of it could be so as to not leak technical information about it. It could also be as simple as not being a very photogenic.
@@196cupcakeI know that in the WWII days, the idea was more to create a flack screen rather than to try to hit aerial targets directly - that would have been the domain of the dedicated AA batteries (20 and 40mm mounts mostly in the US navy). As for what they might be able to do now with the fire control systems and smart projectiles and such, I don’t know 👀
@196cupcake the RIM 116 Is starting to become the replacement for the CIWS
I thought the Flight III would have the new SEWIP.
👍🇺🇲🤝🙏
Appreciate every single one of you guys and gals. Best wishes.
BZ!

but basal shit! and then gangsta? what?
Sadly Chinese 055 is a better and more powerful ship with dual Band radar system on the integrated mast, while US cancelled AN/SPY-3/4 and opt for out-dated AN/SPQ-9B.
ANSPY 6 is supposed to be on those Flight III destroyers
@@ampatriotsmith9545 AN/SPY4 together with X-band AN/SPY-3, but they cancelled SPY-3 and replace ANSPY-4 with AMDR/SPY-6.
The Chinese coast guard ships radar is not better
@@Coinz8 Chinese coast guard has vessels that are over10,000 ton in displacement, two of them in fact.
