I like to see something directed more to retires, or older relocators. I mean, is Medellin a good place, or some other in Colombia, or even another country. I've been married 33 years so I don't worry about the prostitutes anymore lol.
Talking Facts. Showing the real side that foreigners dont see.
Let’s back up and look at the big picture for a moment: Thirty years ago Medellin was the murder capital of the world during what some people would describe as almost a national civil war. Now look at what Medellin has achieved. Modern infrastructure that would make most mid-sized American cities envious. Is there crime? Yes, mixing poor people with stupid and sometimes drunk western tourists practically begging to be victimized in a country with crushing wealth inequality will cause some crime. What I love about this country are its people and the obvious fact that Colombia’s best days are still ahead.
100% true. I still see tourists walking with their iphones out, cash in hand, necklaces , watches.. every single day. They will never learn. Poblado isn't as safe as it used to be, but those who stay incognito have no problems at all.
Very well said
THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wes, you are spot on comparing the friendliness of Manizalenos vs. people from MDE (who still are very friendly, mostly). But don't short-change the tremendous development that also happened in Manizales over the last years. I was in "shock and awe" when I saw the number of new restaurants/cafes especially in Palermo (and Milan) compared to just a couple of years ago. And I met quite a few Colombians who happily relocated to Manizales, coming from MDE and Cali. ANd yes, Maizales boosts the lowest murder rate on any major Colombian city...
You are 100% accurate.
Great assessment. I’m a woman and agree Medellín is such a charming and captivating city. I love Medellín but maybe I need to check out Manizales too.
Great video! I can’t wait to check out your Moving to Colombia course!
Thanks!
I think that this was an amazing video and I like the fact that you actually listen and talk to people and give us their views and not just your own! I think that you are spot on about Manizales and the people! Thanks for sharing your viewpoint
Just came back from Medellin a couple of weeks ago. It was an amazing experience, but not without anxiety. I stayed sober and only hung out with him he right crowd. You can find danger no matter where you go! It is a little easier to find here though…
Trueb
Appreciate the open and direct words!
I was in Medellín for 4 days and Cartagena for 4 days as well. I fell in love with Medellín. I liked it better than México. Coming from Orange County California with parents from Mexico. I plan on going back towards the end of the year.
Food is better in Mexico, also what part of Mexico?
@e Yes, you are right. The food is better in Mexico, but for the most part, the sea food and the street food were good in Medellín and Cartagena. My family is from Michoacán
@melahuak Yes, I am aware. I do not go to Michicaon there for that reason. I have been to Cabo Cancun Puerto Vallarta Tijuana Ensenada and Rosarito. I do plan to go to Guadalupe and Mexico City next year. I have a lot of friends from and in both places. As a Mexican American, I fell in love with Medellín and like Colombia more than Mexico.
Yup. I think you just nailed why I don’t like Medellin. People think I am crazy. I also love Eje Cafetero región.
I loved it when I went to Medellin. It was incredible. People were friendly, women were beautiful and it was just a super chill vibe. I noticed the people who seem to not like Medellin, like Wes are people who came to the city who were already broken. They were escaping shit from the US or Europe and surprise, they ran into the same issues that they were running from.
If you're escaping or hate your current life, and you think moving to another place in the world is going to help, you're wrong.
Go to Medellin. Don't do dumb shit that you wouldn't do in your home country and respect the culture and you'll be fine.
🎉On March 17, TIME magazine included Medellin among the 50 best destinations in the world in 2023.
And in January THE NEW YORK TIMES also included Medellin among the 50 best destinations in the world in 2023.
❤Medellin is the #1 city in quality of life in the country, it has already surpassed Cartagena in international tourists and is, according to Dane, the city with the lowest unemployment in the country in 2023.
I think Medellin is amazing. I'm in a relationship with a Colombian but we both live in the States, so i'm not involved in that part of the city looking for sex and partying. If i was only there to party i think it would get to a dark place too as that lifestyle is not sustainable for most people. Living there is different and I've never been there for more than 2 weeks however I've been going every year for the past 14 and I never got bored of just walking the streets and enjoying the sights and sounds of the city. It's a great city.
Great video Wes. When you say the prices have got up do you mean in the tourist spots? Or with the current inflation problem?
If you like something more traditional and less big, why don't you know ENVIGADO and SABANETA? They are towns south of Medellin, but are they the 2 municipalities (not capitals) with the highest quality of life in the country? They are also super safe.
Big facts. RUclipsrs and nomads have no concept of anything Colombian. Every time they say “Medellin” they’re only talking about poblado/laureles Airbnb culture - which tbh is so far disconnected from reality it shouldn’t even count lol
Shhh let them stay in Poblado. We don't really want disrespectful and noisy tourists and foreigners in the good residential areas too. We have enough with the (still incresing) high cost of living due to unsustainable tourism and gentrification.
Ultimately sounds like medellin is slowly getting americanized
I agree with everything you're saying. Medellin does encompasses both ends of the spectrum, from the very good to the very bad. I spent six months in Medellin, and it was overwhelming for me. Once I moved to Bucaramanga, I began to feel a sense of peace in my mind.
I moved away from Toronto to deepen my spirituality and spent several years living in Mexico, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, and Argentina. Yet, despite living in all these countries, I just can't bring myself to love Medellin. The intense sexual energy + normalized crime activities that happened every day became too much for me to handle. I had a scary experience in Laureles where I was nearly kidnapped by someone on a motorcycle. I managed to escape by running into a nearby store, but the store employees seemed indifferent about my situation and said "it's Medellin".
Everywhere I went, I felt sexualized. Even when I wore loose clothing to the gym, men would approach me. I switched gyms over 5 times. At the gym, women would even inquire about any cosmetic procedures I had on my lips and nurses would ask if I was interested in plastic surgery.
Its like I was only "valued" in Medellin because of how pretty I looked.
I’m going to Medellin at the end of this month, going solo. Any more tips would be appreciated, would like to go dancing at night if it’s safe to go out alone
Medellin vs Pattaya which one should I pick?
Pattaya
Pattaya because it’s got beaches
sounds like you are describing san francisco actually
The US doesn’t have a monopoly on mental health issues. The problem is access. Japan has one of the most strictest laws for gun ownership. They restrict the type of firearm you can have, a psych evaluation is needed, you have to qualify shooting the firearm and you have to renew the license every 4 or 5 years.
Good point. It does seem more glamourized in the US tho
Philosophy…and no shots of Sophia Vergara..who wants to watch a moustache for whole video?
Lmao ahaha
@@WheresWes and its ok even if Sofia wears her stache!
How about Envigado? Is that better?
One of your best videos! Well balanced and thought out. I'm a senior citizen considering moving to Columbia for retirement. Do you know anyone that you trust to do a similar video on Barranquilla?
I have a buddy there that I will interview for the course.
@@WheresWes thank you!
There's a lot to do in mde. I've only been 4x and always had a good time. You def need to move right, though. If it's a str8 Fiesta you're looking for I think ctg is better because of the boat life and Santa Marta is better for nature excursions, but I honestly think the Manizales type cities are better for long term stays. What's the vibe of Barranquilla?
Hear it's super dope
Charm 😊Facts💯💯💯
My girlfriend said that parque lleras has changed dramatically. We don’t plan on going back there any time soon.
Still love Medellin!
Parque Lleras was a place full of artists, culture and nice people years ago but now it's just a dumpster.
I don't see the friendliness people talk about 😅
Depends on if you speak Spanish or not
Medellin is like this because of foreigners & all these digital nomads, what do you expect all that money getting pumped in don’t think people will realise and take opportunities. I hate the fact that Colombia is getting ruined by mainly Ex pats.
Where would you recommend I look at to learn about the language, culture, and people....I retired from my main job at 45 and now learning to work online.....I am not into drugs, sketchy women, or wild partying. I am just looking for peace. If I find a good women naturally...fantastic. My goal is to be at peace and find a community I can be part of. I am looking at Colombia, Brazil, Philippines, and Italy. I plan to visit all the countries before I decide. I spent most of my time in Brazil with my ex before we moved to the US. Now, I am open to everything honestly. Is the drive from Medellin to Manizales safe? I have only been to Colombia once in Cartegena. Ppl tried to rob me twice with my ex. One time my taxi driver chosen by my hotel tried to set me up.

@@WheresWes Thank you. I will check it out.
great job Wes thx for doing this, I am considering Columbia as a fulll time move, I don't like whats happening in my home country of Canada...has the cost of living really gone up a lot in Columbia or is it still affordable? let me know if u have a chance, thx man :)
What happened in Canada
First of all, it is COLOMBIA with an O. Second, just stay there. We are very tired of foreigners and gentrification. Locals are getting really mad and worried so it's just a matter of time before everyting blows up.
I have a question, why do I see that the majority of gringos in the United States are different and they are serious men that doesn't seem like they want to live the crazy life of sex and drugs, but when they come to Latin America they go looking for women and drugs? Is it because in the United States it is not so easy to pick up women? So it's difficult and that's why they come to Latin America?
Another question, are most of the clients of prostitution in Colombia foreigners or the locals?
It's the lifestyle in America. I've always said, the US is the free-ist country in the world...as long as you obey all the laws. At least don't get caught. I think the US has the most people in prison out of all the industrialized nations.
A lot of American woman in general have fk'd up attitudes. They get bored with good guys and good guys are afraid of being rejected. Lots of stupid head games.
When they go to places like Colombia, they realize they can let loose a little. Live out your pent-up fantasies.
The problem is that many assume they have everything figured out and drop their guard.
Play with marches and expect to get burned.
How is the energy of the city? Lively? Chill?
And air quality
Lively yes but heavy in a lot of places.
Air quality is pretty bad but when it rains a lot its better
@@WheresWes good to know, thanks 🙏
how noticeable have the currency fluctuations been? say, when it went from ~ 1 USD--3500 pesos, until now 1-4500?
It went as high as 5100 too
Most people move here for the wrong reasons. But if you come here for to enjoy the food and hiking adventures then is a good spot.
To the point of unhappy people. I think human society needs unhappy people, mainly because these unhappy people are what moves the society forward. If we are all content and happy with what we have then progress slows or stops. People who are unhappy that do something about it makes new innovations, products, businesses, wars, etc...that change our environments.
It's a nice country to visit. But after awhile, I became bored. The majority of Colombians consider sitting down with music and beer a good time. That became old quickly. I don't like to have this opinion since it's contrary to many others but.... Colombia is boring
That's just not true lol.
What the heck? Sounds very ambivalent . Yes, no, beautiful, ugly, icy, hot..up, down.... Confused?
youtube brought everyone thrre.
Yup
What is your current situation in reference to volcano evacuations?
Nothing. It went back down to yellow alert and we aren't close enough to be affected. Just ash and maybe masks but not by an eruption
EMOTIONAL DAMAGE 😂
lol
👍🏼👍🏼
So it’s the mountain version of cartagena.
Not at all. Mde feels kind of like the good area of Atlanta. Parque lleras feels like Fremont street in Vegas. Cartagena feels like Miami water life mixed w downtown Orlando Nightlife
Sorry bro but you are making Colombians out to be opportunists here... Kinda tacky
They are 100%
@@WheresWes Maybe your ex and her family saw your previous videos on how you give the general Colombian population back handed compliments which led to your separation. I mean, what did you expect when you take a crap on the table that you eat from..
