- In October 1944, two German Divisions launched a surprise counter-offensive against the thinly-held line of the U.S. 7th Armored Division at Meijel, The Netherlands. This is the story of that now forgotten offensive, which has since been dubbed 'The Little Ardennes'.

Thanx and hope you feel better soon. Great video and good pronunciation of Dutch towns. Ps River Maas is better known for English speaking people as river Meuse 😊. But in Dutch it’s indeed Maas ( “Mass” with a longer aaa 😅
I just can’t believe it! I am from Meijel and this truly is a great surprise to see ‘my’ village featured. Thank you for paying attention to this battle that raged around this village. Not very well known but nasty and bloody in its ferocity. By the way: thumbs up for the pronunciation of the name of the village. Spot on.

My grandfather was in a tank destroyer in the 7th Armored in WWII and received the silver star during this battle. Thank you for making this and helping paint a picture of what happened.

My father was in 7th Bn. Seaforth Highlanders, 46th Brigade, 15th (Scottish) Infantry Div. I knew he had been at Tilburg, and went on to Venlo, but I had been previously unaware of this action. Thank you for the video.
Nice to hear about British/American cooperation and mutual respect. To often petty nationalism detracts from the cooperative efforts of both countries and is often disrespectful of the fighting men who sacrificed so much to defeat a common enemy.
The UK has a pretty solid military cooperation relationship with her former colonies and/or holdings. Though the US is the only western country that is no longer tied through the royal family and maintaining official military ties such as the Canadian Prince and Princess and the military units such as Australia having their ASAS, and their warships being HMAS and the New Zealand having the NZSAS and their warships being HMNZS while Canada's warships being HMCS.
Everywhere the US has gone to fight the Australian and British military has gone with, even if in very small units or as individuals in an exchange program or advisory role. That's what made what brandon did to our British counterparts when he pulled our troops out without a thought to call the UK with a heads up so damaging to our cooperation in the future.
Just like Marcel, I just got my mind blown. I still remember walking to primary school here every day, and in a little bend there you'd always past a pile of old stones. Three large flat ones, with angled stone work. They left em there because they used to belong to the old church tower, the same church tower the Germans blew up when they eventually retreated from the town. Said they did it to deny the Scotts a tactical advantage ...I should check if those stones are still there.... Anyway, absolutely nuts, out of all the historic videos I ever watched, this is the one topic I never expected to see. Took me like 15 secs just to make sure I wasnt hallucinating. The PIAT was effective but oh boy you had to be close, brave man.
Zamn, the PIAT was devastating at close ranges. That anecdote of the LT destroying the Pz IV is nucking futs.

The German Bundeswehr, which is the German Army's name TODAY, has NOTHING in common with that Wehrmacht in the NS era.
The Bundeswehr is helping everywhere, where help is needed. We even were in Afghanistan, although we had NOTHING to do with that war, just to help the ppl there. But still we were attacked and I lost a few good comrades, brothers from different families. So please correct all those people who still compare the Bundeswehr to the Wehrmacht! We're no Nazis, but German soldiers, who are ALLIED with the NATO today.

Have you guys ever thought of doing a military aviation-themed video? Operations Bolo and Jericho being two great examples. Or Royce Williams taking on *seven* Soviet MiGs.

This is actually really interesting, my family lives in (and around) Meijel, and my grandmother's sister told stories about heavy fighting between the Germans, Americans and Brits. I could never really place those, until now. She also mentioned how nice the Americans were, and how scary the Brits! Apparently they left an impression!

A good example of using Cavalry for their modern purpose in the defense; screening the main body so they have freedom of maneuver to react/counterattack.
My grandfather was captured in Meijel on 27Oct1944. He was in the 87th Recon of the 7th AD.

@@jimmyhillschin9987 Some of the English divisions were a little further north near Nijmegen. They also had their fare share of intense battles, such as the Battle of Gheel.

General Montgomery: 'The Highland Division failed at everything I asked it to do'. The same division in WW1 was known as Harper's Duds. Montgomery much preferred the 50th Northumbrian Division.
@@tomarmstrong5244 the Highland was a worn out division by the time it fought in the latter stages of the Northern European campaign, and Montgomery was Never one to look at the mirror and find fault. Never.
@@JD-tn5lz Sorry Jock, but the Highland Division was no more worn out than the other veteran divisions that had fought in N Africa and Sicily, where the HD also had a poor reputation. That is why it was only used as a second echelon unit on D-Day. Montgomery always gave credit where it was due, but also told the truth.

Fantastic to see this, to me, unknown event. This time though, I found the map difficult to follow. I subscribe to another military channel called The Operations Room and they do graphics and maps which work very well. I hate to suggest it since I'm a long time subscriber and love LfEM, but maybe have a look and see if you like it?
Actually monty had to borrow US 7th armoured from Bradley to spread his thinned out forces as a result market garden failure😢

That was Wereth, in Belgium. You can search for The Wereth 11 or eleven. It is a gruesome story, I visited that place.

Did you know that there was more UK and commonwealth troops fighting in the Pacific campaign than American troops, the UK had gathered its most powerful fleet ever to support the okinawa invasion?
