      Mr Opferman! The Maico dude from out pacific NW! Love watching your videos. Maicos and ATK's are extremely rare here in New England, and obviously the ATK 700 is a legend that's been talked about over many campfires for almost 20 years now. I still often think about having a Koestler built 700, but I just can't justify spending $18,000 on a bike that might not be able to handle the northeastern climate like a Honda, specifically the XR's, CRF-X's, along with a small list of european bikes. (KTM, Husa, Husqy, GasGas, Sherco, etc.) And of course another concern would be my inexperience breaking down a Maico engine, along with access to parts. Have you had a chance to ride any year model Honda CRF450X's? If so, how does it compare to a Maico? 🔧

    Crappy valves during those years. I owned 250x and 450r. Both had to have new valves with under 80hrs ride time. My neighbor had 450x, sane problem. Very expensive. Other than that they were great. If you buy a used one make sure it's had stainless valves put in. Otherwise budget for new valves or purchase for cheap. Yamaha made more dependable top ends during those years.

    I had a 2007 Honda CRF450X, rode mostly mountain trails and high desert single track and absolutely loved it! Probably one of the most reliable bikes I've ever owned. It was a heavy bike but it hauled my big butt around with ease. Had to sell it after I wrecked and broke my foot. Wish I still had it!

    I used to have a 2007 KX450F and I cannot explain how much I miss that bike. It was mostly stock but very comfortable to ride and the suspension was top notch. Was aggressive but not as torquey as my YZ450F. Had a lot of power but was great for my first 450. I might get another one day just to relive some of my childhood every now and then lol

I had too lol but really wish I would have kept it. It's nice to own one of my dream bikes though at the same time...

      @chihuahuaverde425 The 250 was mostly uncorked when I bought it, still had the stock muffler minus baffle. The 450x was completely stock, I deleted the smog system, added JD jet kit and installed a FMF slip on. It really woke up the 450 so quite a big difference in my experience.

    Let’s be honest, there’s been literally no advancements in the world of dirtbikes for the past 30 years. Even the beloved KTMs, known for ‘cutting edge innovation,’ trumpet fuel injection. Think about that.
    While minor improvements have been made in suspensions, it’s still metal springs and some oil.
    Ergonomics have improved, probably, but really?
    Throw out the new electrics coming out and frankly, we’re all riding 30 year old technology with very little differences.

    • @christobey4198
      @christobey4198 3 месяца назад

      You should ride a 20 year old bike back to back and see for yourself. My 2017 ktm 350 is by far better than my 2013 was in all areas from suspension, motor, weight, and handling and that is only 4 model year difference. I get your point that they are basically still made the same but you can't tell me there isn't big improvements from an old to new machine, more advanced engineering can take the old components and make the same, but better.

    • @dalepellerin
      @dalepellerin 3 месяца назад

      @@christobey4198 I do all of the time. I'm not saying bikes aren't better now but they're not that much better. Not $13K vs. $5k better. Not by a long shot.

      @@dalepellerin Yes I agree the cost have gotten stupid, I can't afford to buy new. But then again, I can't afford to replace my 2014 truck that was $40k new with an equivalent truck in 2024 for $70 to $80k either. I spent $4500 on 2017 and to be honest that was at the top of my budget. I also would have a very hard time spending $13k and then watch it tumble down a hill backwards, I'll stick with used.
