Actually I have to step in here.. The X-15 and SR-71 are both record holders in their own right. One did not out do the other as they are in their own respective categories record holders unmatched by anything currently made public today. The X-15 is a rocket plane, defined in the set record as a manned, powered aircraft. Whereas the SR-71 falls within the category of the fastest air-breathing manned aircraft, the defining characteristic being the fact it takes air into the engines and the X-15 does not.
