  • Giving to charity needs to be an obvious and balanced component of EVERYTHING a company does. Charitable contributions can't make up for a bad work culture.

Great point. It's not meant to be a balancing act to try placate individuals, but a holistic approach to bring a positive change to the lives of individuals

Something I've noticed an increase in is companies (usually retail corporations) accepting your donations to a charity that they'll pool and give to that charity. It then looks like the company has given all this money to charity, but it was actually their customers.

Wow, you really did not get what CSR is. It is about being responsible (hence the R in CSR) in every part of what the organisation does. If it is just philanthropy, it is not CSR. You are not a responsible person because you give money to charity and you are not a responsible company if you only do this. The fact that CSR is so confused with charitable giving, even today, always upsets me.

I totally agree. We didn’t get to hear the young person’s question, she might have focussed on corporate giving, rather than the much broader topic and that might be the reason for the response.

Just because it's a 503b organization does not mean it's a great place to give. One can study the "trickle down" to determine how to give best. Of course the giving is always good for the giver.
Most companies wouldn't give at all without a tax incentive to do such. Don't be that company.

I have a dream, a dream where the average Joe-Ann does not get screwed over by the corporations.
We know that capitalism is the worst economic model except for all the others but there is hope.
I want to help people not be victims of greedy corporations and instead empower healthy corporations.
Enter the Pay Ratio: Pay ratio or wage ratio is the ratio of the top salaries to the bottom salaries. In other words, how much bigger the income of a company's top executives are than those of its workers.
The idea I have in mind is for there to be an auditing foundation that makes it favorable for ethical corporations to be successful with a low pay ratio. What that means is that if the lowest paid employee (ie, the janitor) earns $1000 per month, then the top earner (probably the CEO) won’t earn more than $10000. So for the CEO to earn $100000 per month, he’ll only have to pay the lowest earners $10000 per month.
Any company can display on their products or services the pay ratio of their company and a link via QR codes to their financials to all to ensure they are doing what they say.
This would ensure that the consumer gets to support a company that truly does have trickle down economics. If the vast majority of consumers support these ethically responsible companies and not the ones where the CEO’s make stupidly large amounts of money at the detriment to their workers, then they will flourish and the greedy ones will die out. Capitalism survives, the free market remains intact and no one's freedoms are taken away (including corporations).
I implore anyone who can help make this dream come true take up the baton and run with it. Feel free to contact me too.
