“We tried as a band on numerous occasions to do something as good as Into The Valley. Stuart Adamson’s guitar playing left me feeling wholly inadequate. He had a big influence on me.” [The Edge]
Stuart is a legend and original, I shook his hand and thanked him for the joy he had given, words to that effect. I am so honoured to have touched the hands that create musical genius
Skids fan for over 30 years...and I think the U2/GD cover was an excellent effort, right down to the Edge replicating Stuart Adamsons solo, note for note. Just remember why they recorded the cover. Skids, still the greatest band in the world....IMO. Roll on March for the final gigs !! AHOY ! AHOY !
I remember seeing this in 1978 and it blew me away ! The greatest band EVER (IMO) and the greatest tribute that The Edge played to Stuart Adamson (SKIDS guitarist, for those that don't know) was playing the guitar solo note-for-note against the original. Stunning song, whoever plays it. But The Skids, at their prime (even now) would blow away U2. Funny how life turns out.
Saw the Skids support the Stranglers in '78...it just blew me away..especially 'of one skin' and 'saints are coming'..oh and 'open sound'..I windmill danced round the entire dance floor to that one...so sad when Stuart Adamson took his own life...talented beyond belief and beyond his years
Saw these guys several times supporting the Stranglers starting in 78, they were great live and I was so impressed I bought this single on 12" and then then Scared to Dance, a great album.
For me, the 2 gigs SKIDS played at Glen Pavilion Dunfermline on 4th and 5th July 2007 were 2 of the best gigs EVER played by anyone. Period. I am so proud to be from the same country as these guys, this is what music should and MUST be about: melody, passion, intellect, emotion! Ahoy!
Was there mate, 1st saw them supporting The Stranglers at the Apollo 1978, when JJ ragdolled a bouncer, glory days. Stuart Adamson and John McGeoch the best guitarists out of that scene.
Great punk band from Scotland, greatest guitar player Stuart Adamson left to form Big Country, watch their music transform over the years if you get the chance. U2 started out fantastic, but can't compare to Big Country and Skids. Love you Stuart, too damn bad you had to leave us the way you did.
Never seen the film but I was a kid in Scotland when this came out, totally agree with benchism this version is unbeatable. Scottish pipe band drumming has a lot to answer for and the "blink and you've missed it" guitar solo is great. Nice to note that the stadium rockers can't beat four teenage laddies frae Fife! :)
Stuart Adamson was a colossal talent, sadly I feel to a degree underated even here in his home country of Scotland.Class guy as well, met him on two occasions.
Saw The Skids at the Tramshed in Cardiff about 4 years ago and again just this weekend gone (5 th August 2023) at Oddballs rally in Abington Oxfordshire. WOW! Richard Jobson is so energetic and still full of enthusiasm. Great band.
Had the pleasure of seeing the late, great Stuart Adamson and Big Country a couple of times at Rock City,Nottingham. Sad end to a promising life. RIP Stu.
AWSOME..How can u2 and greenday think they could improve on a classic like this with the power of Richard Jobson, ultimate record with so much power....thanks for posting this gem, just dream on bonio....

My favourite Skids song , so one of my favourite songs ever. First band I ever saw live (age 12), first LP I bought. Vastly underrated, as good as any of the 1st wave punk bands.
I like GD and U2's version too, I just find it interesting how context can change the entire meaning, this version is clearly about a troubled relationship with his father (the part about weather IMO here is cause said father gave some lame excuse that he couldn't see the son because it was raining...) while the other does fit Katrina's disaster perfectly while mantaining most of the original lyrics... music is awsome!
@@duncanbirss8923 Yeah, I've always gotten the 'father was a soldier KIA" vibe from this song. Never once thought it was about a poor father-son relationship. Not that that interpretation is invalid any, just never crossed my mind. Might be because I have a solid relationship with my da and he served in the military, so my own experiences shaped the way I interpreted the song.
I'm sorry but wow! Really someone thinks u2 and greendays cover are better?. Everyone is entitled their own opinion but jeez the song from the skids is epic! It just captures the emotion I guess I'm just more into old school even if I am 23 I mean c'mon I love Dean martin and Sinatra to mayhem and gorgoroth lol
+Erika Castellanod Isn't 23 a little bit old to still be doing the "check it out guys I'm only X years old but I listen to older music" routine? I'm 22 and last time I did that I was, like, 14.
I was lucky enough to have seen The Skids twice, supporting The Stranglers in Cardiff Top Rank in 1978 then at Newport Stowaway Club in 1979 supported by another great band called The Edge. One of the truly brilliant and inspiring bands ever.

RIP Stu, we miss you! How on Earth someone can compare Jobson and Adamson to the poser likes of Greenday are beyond me. This is REAL MUSIC people! Listen. Learn to appreciate it!
The Skids wrote the song, their version is outstanding and they are twice the band bloody Green Day and U2 are both Corperate bloated business commodities.
It's spelled corporate, first of all. (not capitalized, I mean what the fuck?) Let me ask you something. Do you think that if The Skids could have, they wouldn't have "sold out"? The Skids are still around but they have never set the world on fire. How are they twice the band that GD & U2 are?
thats the UK spelling mate. and I disagree with it, I like U2, and so did Stuart. there'd be no U2 without the Skids tho, the Edge is the first to admit that.
Stuart Adamson.....what can I say other than he was an absolutely brilliant guitarist. Missed but never forgotten. RIP Stuart.
Over 40 years old and still brilliant.
“We tried as a band on numerous occasions to do something as good as Into The Valley. Stuart Adamson’s guitar playing left me feeling wholly inadequate. He had a big influence on me.” [The Edge]
Never heard a better version than the first one.Great band!! The Saints!

A mega song and really underrated. To me it’s one of the few from that era that haven’t dated.
so pleased i was a teenager 76-83

Outstanding Band 👏
Stay out of my yard though!!!
That they are
I'm a huge U2 fan and love Edge. But anyone that thinks Adamson wasn't an influence doesn't know music.
@Ad Max this is a ridiculous comment. Sam's comment was about people recognizing the Skids' influence, no one's said U2 denied any influence.
RIP Mr Adamson. 19 years and counting.
Bruh, don't forget Green Day. They were involved in this cover
Who would think that . He wrote all these songs
U2 will are the first to admit the Skids showed them the way.
what a great band love the skids and use to listen to big country a lot in the 80s miss those times
Always has been and always will be my all time favourite Skids song

One of Scotland's greatest ever bands for sure!
Skids had military drumming 🎖
This Skids EP single, which was originally released back in November 1978, is, just, a pure punk rock anthem as far as I am concerned.

Top drawer R I P Stuart. Your a pure legend

Die Skids waren eine meiner Lieblingsbands zu der Zeit. Höre ich heute noch gerne. Klasse Musik !

That's the name! I wanted to watch the trailer and I ended up here. Thanks mate.
cool to see Stuart Adamson on guitar - a great loss to the music scene

i was recently in tenerife and i met he drummer from the skid. absolutely amazing song and a great band.. he is an absolute legend
Damn they are good musicians for their time. I freaking love the drums in this song.
Stuart Adamson was a feckin genius. Love ya Stuart. 😢

[Verse 1]
A drowning sorrow floods the deepest grief
How long now
Until a weather change condemns belief
The stone says
This paternal guide once had his day
Once had his day
