HOW DID WE GET HERE?? (buslife in New Mexico)

  • We’re following the road as our bus decides it’s time to change direction and head to Albuquerque, New Mexico!
    We found ourselves here after our bus had some problems with the starter, and we drove to the nearest International dealership to get a new part for our tiny home on wheels.
    After some minor hiccups (the dealership gave us the wrong part!!), our skoolie is back to driving around and bus life is back on track!
    Taking this as an opportunity to explore Albuquerque, we headed over to Petroglyph National Monument where we got up close to three of the six Albuquerque volcanos (JA Volcano, Black Volcano, and Vulcan).
    On our second day in the park, we hiked the Rinconada Trail, which has over 300 petroglyphs visible from along the path! Unfortunately there was an incident with some dogs on the trail, but everyone (and every dog) is going to be okay!
    Thanks for joining us! We hope you have a Happy Holiday Season and a Merry Christmas! 😄🎄

    I have been a bus mechanic for the last 32 years. I learned with starters over the years to pull the old one first if possible. Then count pinion teeth and check rotation direction. If it has the original tag, snap a photo. With that information, you can always get the correct one the first time. You certainly should have gotten your money back on the first one. If you gave the International dealer the last 8 of your VIN, then it was absolutely their screw up.
    Anyways, I am impressed by your persistence on the repair and you willingness to learn. You will never regret these experiences no matter where life takes you.

    Ive been watching these "road shows" for over a year now and yours appeared today in my recommended list. You two remind me so much of my wife and I when we were young, we are old enough to be your parents, maybe even your grandparents. Take care of each other, be kind to others. Make the memories and enjoy life while you can. Someday you will look make on these times and say "Remember when we................................................!!!!" Take care and God bless.

    I hate doing repairs at night outside in the cold! I have almost the same bus as ya'll, and one of the reason's I went with it was because of parts availability.
    Remember in the future the t444e is virtually the same engine as the FORD 7.3 Powerstoke... You should be able to get basic engine parts (like starters ) from Auto Zone and O Reilly"s in the future.
    My local NAPA has that starter in stock for 119.00 here in Ruidoso, NM Lifetime warranty.
    I have on one occasion gotten an idler pulley from International dealer, and later put the same product from Parts Plus on a friends truck ...they came in the same exact package. One cost 138 dollars .....the International source , the other cost 46 from Parts Plus. Same identical product. Go figure.
    There are a number of parts that OEM , (Original Equipment Manufacturer)is the only way to roll. But they are pretty limited. There are specialty parts that are after market parts that are BETTER than OEM. especially with the Ford Powerstroke diesels, thus the t444e as well. Good Luck I hope that fixes the issue.

    I recommend carrying a very large walking stick on these trails. It’s out and ready if you need it without notice and extending it out can keep any animal off you. It’s not so much for clubbing (but it can be) but it’s the extension part that’s really helpful.

      New Mexico is an open carry state. Don’t waste your time with sticks, get a firearm and learn to use it safely. You can legally carry it in the open just about everywhere.

    • @tacticalant3841
      @tacticalant3841 2 года назад

      Aick Sofonofos - you are clearly ignorant on the topic. New Mexico has lots of people open carrying snd concealed carrying, none of whom look like cowboys. Let me ask, whats so civil about being attacked and maimed by dogs? You would probably think a woman being raped and strangled is more civilized than her defending herself.

    • @andreavin3674
      @andreavin3674 2 года назад +3

      @@aick I’d ignore the guy. I’m from Texas and pro guns but they are not going to help with most dog attacks unless they want to risk hitting the person they are trying to help - because the time they draw the dogs already swinging around. Plus most state and federal parks have restrictions, open carry or not. For some guns is the answer to every situation. Clearly it’s more complicated than that :)

    I always would encourage to do your own repair just to familiarize yourself with your equipment but in situations where you need, don't be afraid of repair shops at truck stops they are generally competitive on prices and have access to most commercial equipment and when it's private owners most shops tend to work with prices on labor best of luck be safe. 🚛👋

    I really enjoyed this video! Living in Hawaii, we have prehistoric petroglyphs in lava fields, especially on the big island of Hawaii, where I live. The red lava rock that Jimmy picked up gets its color from the iron ore that's in the magma. If it was lightweight "pumice stone", that's a part of cinder. There's red cinder and black cinder. Depending on the temperature, gases, etc. during an eruption, sometimes there's a splatter cone formed when the lava shoots up into the air and comes down, building up a cone shaped mound. I love learning about other places, especially when they resemble parts of Hawaii. Of the 13 climates in the world, this island experiences about 11. Hope you guys can come to visit the Big Island of Hawaii sometime. Sorry that van life is not allowed here, yet. I always look forward to your adventures. Stay safe!👍💗🙏🏻

    So I stumbled upon y’all’s channel randomly 😂 but I have some advice for your mechanical issues. When you’re looking for parts I’d buy certain parts from the dealer and others from third party stores. For example the starter y’all got can be purchased at a lot of auto parts stores, all you would need is the part number. The part number is usually on the part itself which is usually hard to read. But there is a solution you call the dealer give them the vin and ask about your part. The trick is ask them for the price and what not but at the end ask them for the part number. For the most part advance auto and autozone carry big truck starters, alternators and other parts, but if they don’t call a bunch of truck parts stores nearby. Just my advice because parts can add up overtime. I run my own trucking company so I’ve learned thru mistakes of my own. Good luck on y’all’s adventure and if you need help in the Houston Texas area I’m here with tools. 😂

    Take your old starter to an old school starter rebuild shop, have it rebuilt & keep as a spare. Looks like you have the 39MT gear reduction starter. If you think that one is heavy try the 42MT. That bad boy is 66 lbs over your head while trying to get one bolt started.

    I very much have enjoyed following u & Natalie. I pray that ur bus will stop making u young people worry about what's next? Spent monies on mechanical (in the beginning b-4 starting ur adventure) is always monies well spent. I pray that u both maybe think more about water & 4 sure a way 2 keep yourselves safe on ur trails. Mean dogs r bad on a trail but there's other predators 2 think about that r far worst. A plan well in advance will get u & Natalie back 2 ur bus safe. So praying & enjoying u young good folks on this adventure is putting smiles on my face. Stay safe till the next time l see ur next feed. See-ya

    You can buy a 10 tooth bendix for that starter to replace the 12 tooth one. That way, you will have a back up starter if the other one fails :)

    Volcanoes around Albuquerque erupted a bit over 800 years ago and a great deal of the Rio Grande valley as far south as Elephant Butte was a lava flow. The local natives were still talking about it in their oral histories when the Spanish came up from Mexico about 500 years ago. Around Grant, New Mexico you can visit ice caves in the volcanic hills where CO2 seeping up from underground reaches atmospheric pressures, expands (thus siphoning ambient energy), and freezes whatever humidity is in the air. Early settlers used the caves for food storage. Any sheep in petroglyphs would have been hunted. Domestic sheep were introduce by European and readily adopted by the tribes. Some species of wild sheep (as well as mastodons and giant ground sloth) were hunted to extinction before the arrival of Europeans.

      Those bunnies were such a surprise for us! We are used to seeing them out in the woods and such at Jimmy's family's house but NEVER in the middle of the city! Haha 😂
