Congrats to the Student too, she was very open minded and adaptive! I hope we'll hear her soon...

It's strange but this phrase breathing and a will of not rushing things comes naturally after certain age, you suddenly enjoy the phrase, you want to stay there as long as it is, not to run further, because even as the music take 20 minutes to play it will end, you'll feel sad, and when it comes to Mozart it's a pity

I feel this generation of pianists just love to show off technical skill of playing everything fast, fast, fast. Look at all the baroque opera singers as well: all about just rushing, rushing, look how fast I can sing. Absolutely no musicality. All a marathon.

How do I actually know how short or long Mozart wanted his notes, please? I mean in those cases, where Schiff said, that sightreading the Mozart-notes is not enough 😊

The end of the sonata cannot be played in time. Music notation limits to some extent but the last bit is an unwinding clock and left and right hand should be out of sync. Have a listen to Horowitz doing this.

25:09 Schiff is thinking, 'are you fucking serious? Play those 3 notes of equal value?'
I find Schiff to be the worst in terms of the masterclass. What one has to remember is that JUST because he has such notoriety, that his opinions and suggestions hold forth!

No, a lot of masterclasses like you said, from bigger picture to details, but what actually helps, is exactly what Schiff dose, rather walk with students with every detail from start, than bullshiting about some big fantasy thing, because at the end, details make bigger thing happens

These are advanced students. They have already studied what they play in considerable detail. What the master here does is explain the finesse necessary for fuller interpretation. In short the student understands the larger things well enough and to discuss those in such a masterclass would be a waste of time, which is fixed. He does all this with firmness but a great deal of tact.

It's as if they just copy all the technical elements and never fully feel the music as an artist. After all, it's not their culture. It's as if we went and tried to sing Chinese opera. Totally different style, pitches, everything.

@@smurf902 My guess is that if they are exposed to Western music from childhood, their sensitivity to it should be (and is) no less than that of Europeans. I very much doubt whether it would be possible to identify accurately who is playing without seeing a face. Could make an interesting experiment.
