Gardening is an age old British pastime; many people are proud of their gardens and just open them up for people to wander in and see. Sometimes there is a small charge for charity, but more often it’s free.
Oh, most definitely, and it makes my heart so happy. I love the pride that everyone takes in their garden here. We appreciate your time sharing with us. 🤍 Jess x
Beautiful countryside and skyscape, lovely destination, impeccable driving along our quirky roads, all in the company of my favourite cousins. A perfect Sunday. If you see open cottage gardens, take time to pop in. The Brits love their gardens and are rightly proud of them. It is often free, but sometimes there is a small charge, when the money goes to charity.
"The Brits love their gardens"
True - but I fear that does NOT generally apply to those who are merely 'British' by operation of law, rather than by ancestry. Sad, I know - but true, nonetheless.
Couldn't agree more! We appreciate all your love and support friend. We love sharing our love of this beautiful world with you all. It makes my day knowing we have such wonderful people watching our videos. 🤍 Jess x
Open Garden signs are indeed an invitation, to all, to come and have a free gander at home-owners' gardening efforts. It's something in England, certainly, that has been on-going for decades and is not entirely unknown in France.
I love that! Thank you so much for sharing with us. 🤍 Jess x
You're a good driver Chris. Thanks for the video Daydreamers!
Much appreciated. I do my best. Cheers, Chris
You should go and watch a village cricket game at the weekend if you get the chance 🏏 If you get a tattoo it has to be the English rose
That would be fantastic , a cricket game here...
Also, yes, I agree with the english rose!! I'm looking at getting a bouquet of flowers all flowers from the UK. To remind me that I'm always carrying the UK with me everywhere I go! 🤍 Jess x
Hi Jess, Chris, Colette and Shane, hope you are all well my friends. Jess you hit the nail on the head when you said how relaxing you find your drives and I couldn't agree more. Sadly the weather this July has been very unsettled which probably indicates that September will be a scorcher. 🌞. I think this video must contain the most roundabouts that you have experienced for one of your trips. 😄. Hitchin is a lovely part of Hertfordshire and thank you so much for a lovely trip.
Have a great Tuesday and an even better rest of the week. xx. ❤
Friend, we're all doing well. We hope you are doing well and have a lovely rest of your week. We love driving around and seeing everything this beautiful world has to offer. We're so incredibly lucky. Thank you for always coming along with us. We hope all of our future adventures are just wonderful and can make you smile. We really love and appreciate you! Thank you from all of us 🤍Jess, Chris, Shane & Colette x
Hi guys, thanks for your videos, you should definitely try an open garden, sometimes they provide tea and cakes and have a collection for charity :)
Thanks for the tips! Looking them up to see if we can find one that we can go in support. I love gardening and how much pride everyone has over here for their gardens. It makes me so happy. 🤍 Jess x
Great video guys. Showing the great British country lanes and beautiful country side on your journeys are so cool. Good to know that Chris has mastered driving in the UK. My driving style is the same as Chris, he knows when to speed up and slow down at the right times.
We are so glad you enjoy. We absolutely love taking you all along with us for all of our adventures. It is such a pleasure to have each and every one of you with us!! Thank you so much for your love and support. It means so much! 🤍 Jess x
Enjoy it while you can. Starmer wants to cover it in new builds.
Exactly right
Well that doesn't sound good. Cheers, Chris
Starmer the stutterer. 😊
A tattoo? Why not an 'English Rose' since you are becoming one...
It's such a lovely idea. I really appreciate it!! I'm creating a bouquet of all flowers from here. So I have a beautiful work of art of UK and from England! So I can always carry the UK with me everywhere I go. 🤍 Jess x
I love your driving videos. I've no idea why but I actually teared up when you arrived at the lavender farm, maybe because it was so gorgeous. Like someone else said, the humps are called sleeping policemen which I think is hilarious. Also belated congrats on 5k subs 😃😃😃
Wow, thank you. We're so glad you enjoy them. We love sharing with you as well. Thank you for your love! 🤍 Jess x
Google, National Gardens Scheme. Lovely lavender 😊
Oh, thank you! Really appreciate your time sharing. Cheers 🤍 Jess x
Growing up most gardens in my area in Wiltshire used to grow lavender and we used to push one another into it , come out smelling nice but unhappy neighbours 😊
Oh, I can only imagine your neighbors not being very happy. But you all would come out smelling , so clean and nice. 😂
I love it. Thank you for sharing! 🤍 Jess x
I use lavender in my wardrobes as a deterrent to clothes moths.
It's so wonderful and useful for so many things. I'm very excited for a couple of weeks to share something special with you all! 🤍 Jess x
A few drops of Lavender oil mixed with Lavender water put into a spay bottle.
Great for spraying your ankles and legs.
Then those pesky Mosquitos give you a miss.
And so much better for you than normal bug spray. Cheers, Chris
#4 Happy Sunday morning Jess & Chris. Let's go, indeed.
Thank you for your love, friend! 🤍 Jess x
What you need to do before you head home to the states, take a walk out into the countryside on a hot sunny day, where it’s quiet and you can hear the skylarks singing high above the fields, then go home and play Ralph Vaughan Williams “The Lark Ascending”, it will always remind you of the English countryside
That sounds like an epic win. If we can work that in, we will. Or at least we can do all the parts at different time to remember that English countryside. We are currently listening to it while we are responding to comments. Cheers, Chris
Wonderful driving , scenery and people as always. Thankyou so much ❤❤
I'm glad you enjoyed it! We're so happy you come with you, friend. 🤍 Jess x
The perfect end to the day being part of your adventures. A rose by any other day must be Jess!!
It was indeed. And you nailed it. Cheers, Chris
There's a lavendar farm in Kent near Ramsgate I've been to. As a child visiting my grandma, there was always a faint smell of lavender in her house. She used to put sprigs of the stuff from her garden in all the clothes cupboards and drawers. Kept the moths out without being as penetrating a smell as the naphthaline in mothballs.
Thanks for sharing about your grandmother and lavender! I will look that lavender farm up. Thank you, friend. 🤍 Jess x
What a lovely day out guys and I smelt that Lavender through my computer! Can you imagine on a late summer day all the bumble bees there as they are drawn to Lavender! Take care and thanks for sharing a cracking video x
I'm so glad you enjoyed this day out with us! Oh, I can imagine all of the happy bumblebees. I love a good, happy bee. We truly appreciate your love and support so much, friend! 🤍 Jess x
I don't think Chris ever had any problem with even with the single lane roads. In your first videos, you'd hear him chuckling (in a good way) at your apprehension!
He definitely enjoys the roads and driving here. He is such a cool, calm, collected dude!! 🤍 Jess x
I love Hitchin Lavender Farm! Great food that they serve.😍
It was such a wonderful lavender farm. We had a blast! 🤍 Jess x
5:11 "Take a gander" very British expression. Love it!
Oh, I love it so very much, friend! 🤍 Jess x
Another lovely video. If you’re still here in the U.K. next year make a visit to the Confetti Flower Fields in Pershore, Worcestershire. I say next year as they only open to the public one week a year when the flowers are in bloom and for this year the last day is today (7/7/24).
They are fields full of delphiniums and also wild flowers which are made into confetti which they sell online as well. They are stunning.
That sounds amazing. It would have been something to see I am sure. Thanks for the recommendation. Cheers, Chris
The 'significant Bridge' you saw in Hitchin is the 'East Coast Mainline' it goes from London to Edinburgh.
Another great video. England and the UK as a whole does have some lovely countryside though not so enjoyable experiencing it at the moment due to the lousy weather. We have been spoilt with some lovely summers in recent years but this one so far reminds of some cool, wet, depressing summers from my childhood in the 1980's.
It has been a little bit more rainy, but it could always be worse. Cheers, Chris
There is something very uplifting to see fields of lavender, poppies or linseed. If you get the chance you should try and visit the Chelsea Physic Garden in London which was originally created to teach student apothecaries (forerunners of pharmacists/doctors) the medicinal value of plants and flowers. These days it is a bit more than that but it is a gorgeous garden now (and still involved in botany and the uses of plants). It might give you some more inspiration for your flower farm when you go home. 👍
That is an amazing suggestion. Something that I think we will take up, if we can. Thanks for the suggestion. Cheers, Chris
That bridge carries the East Coast Main Line. Its the railway from London to Peterborough, Leeds, York, Newcastle and Edinburgh.
Thanks for the background on the bridge. Cheers, Chris
I was very entertained by being reacquainted with the road through Ickleford and on through Hitchin. During my "gap year" in 1951, before university, I worked as what used to be called a ward orderly, i.e., a nursing assistant, in the old N. Herts hospital in Hitchin. We did a 48 hour week usually in split shifts. This meant that I cycled from my family home and back, just a mile or two further north from Hitchin over the county boundary into Bedfordshire. The split shift meant that I mostly did four trips a day. When on night duty it was a 12 hour shift, 8pm to 8am.
Hitchin has a really splendid parish church right in the middle of the town just above the market.
It also had a nice outdoor swimming pool - I don't know if this is still in operation.
Thanks for sharing. Sounds like you were at least able to enjoy your time in Hitchin. Cheers, Chris.
You would make a good driver going asround those mini roundabouts
Much appreciated. Cheers, Chris
Must be the early 90's since I was last in Hitchin. I used to work in Stevenage and Letchworth, but we also had offices in Hitchin. Hitchin and Letchworth, and even Stevenage old town all certainly used to be really lovely places. The rest of Stevenage no so much, lol.
That seems like a while ago, but also seems like yesterday. Hopefully you enjoyed your time working there. Cheers, Chris
Understating the weather, very British Jess 😂.
Beautiful vlog as usual, really applaud Chris’s driving. It’s like you guys have been here all your lives 😊
You know what, friend.. I'm just trying to be as british as possible.. 😂
You're so glad.
You enjoyed the Day Out with us. Thank you for coming along. 🤍 Jess x
That farm is only 6 miles from, close enough to give you a virtual hug. I do get annoyed that the speed humps are sometimes too extreme. Try going over some at anywhere near the speed limit and it will take your sump out. can you imagine having cross-roads at every one of those roundabouts? It would take you forever. There are some lovely old villages around Hitchin. It is great that you got to see some. Stay safe and keep them coming.
It was a blast, glad we could see something close to your neck of the woods. Cross-roads at every roundabout does not sound fun. We will keep them coming, stay tuned for the next ones. Cheers, Chris
What a lovely day you both had🙃chris has definitely mastered driving over here👌bet he'll find it really weird when he drives back in the States though🤔film it for us when you go back, it'll be a giggle😉
Are we so glad you enjoyed the video, friend! It is so much fun to share our fun adventures with you, and we can not wait to take you along with us. As we try to transition back to the US in 2025 (😭).... We will most definitely share our first-time driving in the U.S. after being here...
🤍 Jess x

03:12 When Speed Humps were first introduced here about 40 years ago they were nicknamed "Sleeping Policemen". 🤣 The ones that you went over there are the longer ones called "Speed Tables". 🙂
04:25 Open Gardens days, where private individuals have opened up their gardens for others to see on a particular day or days, are a great way of seeing what other folk have done with their gardens and perhaps pick up some tips and hints. They are not usually competitions as such and you can often buy cuttings of the plants growing there. Admission to all the gardens is usually by purchasing a guide including a map to all of them and can usually be bought from the individual participants themselves at their homes. The price for my local Open Gardens is £5.00. In general all the proceeds go to charity. Given your love of plants and flowers I would strongly recommend that you visit one.👍
Speed Humps, something I suppose you just have to deal with now. Regarding the Open Gardens, that is a pretty sweet concept. Especially with all, or at least most of the proceeds going to charity. We shall keep our eyes out for one of those moving forward. Cheers, Chris
Scottish thistle , Welsh Leek, Irish Shamrock and English rose. That will cover it! 😅
Sounds like a great combo. Cheers, Chris
There is a lovely Lavender Farm in Heacham Norfolk.
We have been there and loved it. We will most likely go again. Cheers, Chris
Another beautiful drive Jess, I love Lavander, as you know it attracts bees, I can spend hours in my garden just watching the bees busying themselves flitting from flower to flower, it's so relaxing. You should get a tattoo that represents your time here, maybe the flower of England which is a Red Rose 🌹 what do you think?
Great video which sets me up for a Sunday. Belated wishes for 4th July. Take care J&C. 🇺🇸🤝🏻🇬🇧👍🏻
A happy bees and lavender and beautiful flowers and gardens.Fill my heart with such joy! We are so glad you enjoy our wonderful adventures with us. I definitely agree with you on the tattoo of flowers that I have found most beautiful here in the UK! One will definitely be the beautiful English Red Rose!! 🤍 Jess x
Loved the video 😊😊
Thanks. Cheers, Chris and Jess
I love and appreciate your posts. It's lovely to hear how people from other countries like our country. It's a shame we don't appreciate it as much as you do.
Thanks as always
You know, friend, we're so thankful to be able to share our fun adventures with you. I think.
It makes us really truly appreciate what we have looking through someone else's eyes. 🤍 Jess x
Thanks for the day out away from my flat
You are more than welcome. Cheers, Chris and Jess
I forgot to say, there's a fantastic open garden in Bury St Edmunds during the summer
Thanks for the shout out..from us in Rougham!
Oh, we will have to see when it's going to happen. I would love to attend! 🤍 Jess x
Loved the driving, even if you did get cut up by that silver car
It happens. Cheers, Chris
Lavender on the chips you say? Well that's a new one on me, I probably would have tried it though for the experience.
It was very interesting. I really enjoyed it, but I enjoyed the chili on my chips the most!
Back in the US, we call them chili cheese fries.. 😉
🤍 Jess x
a couple of suggestion to visit
Norfolk lavender bonus its only a couple of miles from the coast
Pensthorpe nature reserve
Houghton Hall
Great suggestions, we have been to Norfolk Lavender. The others sound like something we should check out. Cheers, Chris
I find this ironic.
This is only the second video I have watched of yours and _was_ going to suggest you go to a Lavendar farm, I was watching this video to see if I could work out a rough area because there's a local farm that was known nationally.
Norfolk Lavendar.
And here you are at Hitchin Lavendar, lol
If you go to Norfolk, there are Castle ruins, Norfolk Lavendar and Sandringham House [ one of the king's houses ] to visit. It's not far from Hertfordshire ;-)
You havd to visit Chatsworth house and Gardens in Derbyshire..you'll love it .Then go for a hike and nosey around the peak district. Make sure to drive on Winnats pass..
That sounds and looks like a great place to check out. Thanks. Cheers, Chris
I love lavender. People would cloth bags of dry lavender in there clothes drawers to keep moths away. We also have lavender farms here in Kent. I bet there was lots of bees on the lavender.
We might have to check that one out. And yes, there were lots of bees out there. Cheers, Chris
Stunning.. we were there last week. I used to live in Arlesey, the village which you drove through just before arriving at the farm.
Myself and the wife now live in Stevenage (next town over from Hitchin) and we try to visit the farm at least once a year 🪻🥰
It was such a beautiful farm. Oh , maybe we were there at the same time..... How cool, we could have walked by each other...
Thank you for your time! 🤍 Jess x
You were within two miles of the UK's first traffic roundabout in Letworth Garden City; which you skirted before the first double mini roundabout. Thank you for giving me a dlfferent view of where I live.
Wish we knew, we might have detoured a bit to see that. And you are welcome, glad we could give you a different view. Cheers, Chris
Not been to the Hitchin lavender farm, but I used to go to the one in Banstead, Surrey
Oh, I will look that one up. Maybe we should check it out, too?
🤍 Jess x
Hi guys , very beautiful , I've been to a lavender farm near where I live in Kent it's very beautiful 💜. Some lovely gifts in the shop as well and lavender icecream 😋. Great driving Chris 😊
Lavender ice cream, something I never thought of before, but has won me over for sure. Also, Thanks for the kind words on my driving. Cheers, Chris
We used to call those speed-bumps 'Sleeping Policemen'
Still do
Cool, thanks for sharing very interesting!
You’re beginning to sound well and truly British commenting on the weather and how it’s already July😂. I expect you’ve seen Norfolk Lavender near to Sandringham? Thanks for another lovely video ❤
Haha, well, I'm working at it... 😂 We have been to Norfolk Lavender. We love it! 🤍 Jess x
Hi lovely people, you will find nothing more English than cricket
Sounds like a game that American could look into 🤔. Cheers, Chris
Oh the memories of family days out... On many occasions I've been driving my family around in the car... And the weather doesn't know what it want's to do... One minute it's quite cool... And the next minute you're sweating like a pig... But if some of them were perhaps a little chilly... And others were getting rather warm... We somehow had to find a happy medium... So we decided to buy a couple of fleece blankets and keep them in the car... So that if one of them had the window down to keep cool... Anyone who became too cold would simply grab a fleece blanket to keep themselves warm... But that time has now passed... As i only have myself to please while driving these days... 😂 I must admit that i'm never nervous while driving either Chris... But i must admit that before we set off on a day out... I am a little apprehensive... As you'll never know if you're going to get caught up in a motorway traffic jam... Or whether you'll be sent on a really long detour to get to your destination... Or whether you'll have a breakdown on route... But the driving itself doesn't bother me... As i'm better protected in my car... Than when I've been previously riding on my motorbike... As i always had to assume that everyone else on the road was trying to kill me... You then learn to become a very defensive minded rider... And to avoid taking any unnecessary risks... But you can never anticipate the actions of everyone else on the road... So i'm much more relaxed while i'm driving rather than riding... Many thanks for taking us all with you on your countryside drive Chris & Jess... All the very best guys... 👍 Cheers. 🍺
I absolutely love the fleece blanket idea. I think I may have to use that. Thank you so very much. You know I look forward Unknown and the possibilities of the days drive.
Thank you so much for sharing your time that you did share with your family our driving and spending your days with. We're
Now, we're happy to have you come along with us on our drives! Thank.
Thank you so much for coming with us today and loving us! 🤍 Jess x
Let's face it guys ...your home ❤.....and it's all yours... should you wish to take it .
If nothing else, we will take a little bit of it with us when we go. Cheers, Chris
The one thing our driving instructors always tell you is treat everyone else on the road as idiots and expect the unexpected. That way you never or should never get caught out.
That is some really good advice. Cheers, Chris
Some decent, if not great, weather at last but the long term forecast for the U.K. is a cool wet summer unfortunately; at least you can drive to interesting places to make up for the poor weather !
We definitely make a day of it rain or shine! We absolutely love being able to enjoy the days we're given. Thank you for your love! 🤍 Jess x
A list of the gardens that are open to the public for one day a year are published in The National Garden Scheme's " Yellow Book" ❤❤.
Thanks for the pointer! We will look into it. Cheers, Chris
Wonderful bit of multi-roundabout navigation Chris. Goes to show they save time. I must be the world's worst Lavender grower. Each year I buy a new one as the previous years is now dead. I water them, treat them with utmost affection, plant them in new spots yet within months it is dead. Not been to that farm.
Treating them with affection and watering them is where you are going wrong. Grow them in a very well drained, gritty poor soil, in full sun and they grow fine. No watering required after the first few weeks of planting.
Sweet friend, I agree with Rebeccat!! Neglect them and treat them as they are succulent. They love full sun and sandy soil and hate wet roots! I think a lot of people want to love them and they love them too much and they hate that. Don't give up. Please give lavender another try! 🤍 Jess x
Thanks to you both. Worth another try.
Great video as usual. Did you notess the kite flying above you guys at 4.46.
No, we didn't. How cool, thank you for breaking our attention to that! 🤍 Jess x
Surprised to see you driiving through my hometown Letchworth.Garden city 😀 Yea been to the lavender farm there in the past very pretty. its a shame you didnt dirive through letchworth town centre they have some lovely flowers in the roundabouts etc. Hitchin goes back to the doomsday book 1066 The open garden that you see in Letchworth is when people compete for the best gardens, as letchworth is the worlds first garden city. Reallly interesting as usual jess chris p/s the cricketers is a pub not a cricket club
We will definitely be back to Letchworth! It was such a wonderful day to be able to explore and experience something so wonderful that people call home. Have you ever been to that pub? Maybe we should give it a try? 🤍 Jess x
Are you taliking about the cricketers in ickleford or the three horseshoes at norton, i used to go in there quiet a lot at one time it did have a nice restaurant i dont no if its still got one you would have to google it. Hitchin has a farmers market, they sell antiques collectables on friday. General market Sat /Tues i think you would like that, its all local produce. x
Not a garden competition, just an Open Gardens day/scheme
They also raise money for charities
We love it, and I'm going to try and find one coming up to attend. 🤍 Jess x
This does not look part of of the National Garden Scheme also known as the yellow book scheme. Gardens are judged harshly to be allowed to take part. Raises money for charity. These are usually beautiful private gardens of all sizes.
That sounds like a really cool process. We would love to check one of them out. Cheers, Chris
If you watch Amanda rea she lives down your way she is American living in England for over 10 years she and her husband are tattooing artist have there own business ok God bless 💯🇬🇧🌹👍
Sounds like a solid recommendation. Cheers, Chris
Sorry about the roads. Years ago they were in way better condition and speed bumps/humps didn't exist :\
It is unfortunate, but we understand it is part of it. Sometimes it is a priority and sometimes other things take priority. Cheers, Chris
@@DaydreamersBarn It is unfortunate, imagine being in an ambulance with a spinal injury for e.g. This is what idiots with really powerful cars have caused because they want to go skidding around. Sure, you want to have some fun, well that is what private roads and race tracks are for. Apologies for the rant.
@SgtSteel1 No friend, we completely understand. People need to not think about themselves when it comes to damaging things others use as well. Goes.
Back to me (Jess), always talking about the community. We all need to care for our planet! 🤍 Jess x
The U.S.A played England at cricket last week, the highlights are on RUclips if you're interested 😊🤘👍..
I'll check it out! Thank you, friend. We appreciate you. 🤍 Jess x
Nothing seems to faze Chris whether he's behind the wheel or not - or you for that matter Jess.
Oh, thank you, friend.I agree , chris is so just laid back and calm and collected. He is just such a good guy! I think chris and I balance each other out extremely well. We appreciate your love, friend! 🤍 Jess x
they're not even humps they're sleeping policemen a way to slow traffic in built up areas 😂😂😂
Sounds like a good nickname for them. Cheers, Chris
How does driving in the UK compare to the USA. Watching your videos back, what chances you get a ticket or get pulled over by cops in the US v UK.
So driving in the UK is different from the US. In the way that there are more speed cameras in the UK than in the US. It's definitely not a normal occurrence to be pulled over in the US by a Police officer unless you are breaking the law. So we followed the law, so it didn't happen. We have been ticketed more here, and we are never driving over the speed limit. We think that the cameras are incorrectly calibrated or driving in a poorly marked bustlane.
We absolutely love driving here. It has been a wonderful experience and has allowed us to appreciate the slow pace. 🤍 Jess x
At 25.45, I thought you said something other than 'they're all sold' meaning drunkards...sorry, had to say it 😉
I did too! It really sounded like that somewhat slightly rude terminology for someone who has had too much “falling down water” 😳😁😁
Haha, oh no.. 😅
Thanks for the giggle friends! 🤍 Jess x
Weather has been rubbish this spring and summer.
It has been different from last year for sure. Cheers, Chris
In my 57 years this is the worst summer I can ever remember. It’s been so cold and grey and miserable. I can remember wetter summers but they weren’t anywhere near as cold as this summer has been. I’m just praying that summer actually arrives soon otherwise we’ll soon be into autumn weather 😡
It has been different than the last one we went through, but we are trying not to complain too much. Cheers, Chris
What do you think about our Roundabout system, enabling traffic to flow freely in all directions !! Are you driving an electric vehicle ?
Definitely love the roundabout. It is just like a smooth transition through intersection. No, not driving electric. 🤍 Jess x
@@DaydreamersBarn would you like to see more roundabouts in the USA. 😊
@geordieb3959 I believe so. It would cut down on the number of stop lights.
Jess x
@DaydreamersBarn Hopefully you will see more of them on your return to the USA.👍👍😊
I am jealous! In my spare time I do acrylic painting on A3 artboard, and am always looking for subjects. Those shots at the lavender farm were absolutely beautiful, and I could just imagine practising my limited talent with that mix of colours. The sky complimented the land at the horizon just perfectly. Gorgeous ! You never fail with the videos. Thanks again. Sheffield South Yorkshire.
Friend, it was so beautiful! I'm sure you would be able to paint it and make it look even more beautiful. We hope you are able to find the perfect pitcher to paint! We appreciate all of your love and support. 🤍 Jess x
