Animal Crossing: Retribution sounds so epic, I'd have to pick it up. I could see it becoming number 1 on Steam in an hour or so of release. I'm not too terribly fond of DA:D, it makes me think I'm about to get grounded or something, lol.

I always found Halo's original title to be interesting. "Halo: Combat Evolved". Is it a sequel to something? A reboot? Would've been funny if the later games kept the "Combat Evolved" subtitle, like Halo Combat Evolved 5 Guardians.
Halo: CE is a fun one because back then the word "Halo" didn't have the connotations and association with shooters that it has among gamers today. I think they were afraid that people would think it's some kind of religious game or something so they added the subtitle to clarify what the game is and avoid that problem. Obviously after Halo became a ridiculously successful franchise that was no longer a problem so they didn't really need the subtitle anymore.
Just in time. We started talking about name for our project literally yesterday PS: I always need a few seconds to figure out which Xbox is the current one...
Well in hindsight this video was more foreshadowing then I thought haha. I really like the new name and thematically it makes more sense to name it after the heroes like Inquisition.
Animal Crossing Retribution: We're breaking the chains, Tom Nook! On names: I think a game title that really stands out to me as being super forgettable is Eternal Darkness. On weird or bizarre names, one that still stands out to me is Metal Gear Rising Revengeance, because that's not a real word, but it almost sounds like a mistake and not like something cool some writer came up with.
Naming anything is such an odd thing. The best names are ones that accurately describe what it is about but that can be hard because you have to imply it and not state it. I can see how temp names can become permanent because it is just hard to figure out something when you got something that is good enough.
you and Tim Cain are my two favorite youtube channels at the moment. I am learning such much from your two perspectives. I hope everything is going well and that the channel stays strong. I can't wait for this next dragon age game lol.
I think the only Spiders game that has a name with cache and that actually makes sense is Technomancer. Their other titles (SteelRising, Greedfall) are sort of the naming equivalent of unflavored oatmeal. I remember the old Sierra Games everything had to be tagged with "-Quest" at the end. For King's Quest and Hero's Quest (nee Quest for Glory) that was fine. Space Quest, sure... but... Police Quest...? Do cops "quest?"
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order was one I did not like. I get it was Star Wars, a new "Jedi" series, and the title is Fallen Order, but it didn't sit right with me. Another infamous example is the recent Call of Duty titles. You have Call of Duty: Black Ops: Cold War. Call of Duty Modern Warfare 1/2/3 not to be confused with the Call of Duty Modern Warfare 1/2/3 of old.
For Tears of the Kingdom I see most people online refer to it as “TOTK”. Same thing with Breath of the Wild, it’s almost exclusively referred to as “BOTW” now. I actually was thinking about video game titles recently so this video is a nice coincidence. 2 recent games that spurred my train of thought: “Bloomtown: A Different Story” and “Lost Records: Bloom & Rage”. I felt like both titles were a bit too long.
I chose a name for my game was worried it was pretentious, and then saw that Neil Gaiman named one of his novels with the same sorta syntax - I felt like if it was pretentious I was at least in good company.
One think I couldn't help but think tho, regarding titles: numbers. Does it have to imply story sequencing? Improvement? I made a joke recently how various of my favourite games are just Blah Blah Blah 2. Borderlands 2, The Sims 2, Portal 2, Destiny 2, Mass Effect 2, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Dragon Age 2 which I think you were there when Bioware declared discontentment with the name.
whenever I think about naming in games I remember that The Coca-Cola company has a practical trademark on the word monster. They wish they had a real one but with that much money and lawyers I don't think they need the actual paper from the USPTO. The second thing that comes to mind is how bad SQEX is at naming games. From Forspoken to Triangle Strategy.
I definitely have a bad habit of using single (not ownable) words as titles. For example, I have a project called "Symbiosis." Would you guess that it's supposed to be a YA school life romcom set in the modern day? I have others previously called "Static" and "Fabric" that I have since expanded to better illustrate what actually happens in the story and what roles "static" and "fabric" play in their given worlds.
I think The Veilguard is a better name, even though "Dreadwolf" was extremely badass. But is definitely better to have a name that is less focused on Solas and more on the player and his companions.
Ok so keep it short and snippy, but unique. Dont get mixed up with other games. As example dont name game. Dragon age in the face of despair. Instead aim for a name like Dragon age revolution They both would describe someone doing something. Its just one is easy for audience to remember for advertising.
My current main game: "Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis ver.2" This name becomes particularly annoying when people ask me what I play. As far as Anthem searches go, my top results in USA have always been for medical insurance lol.
FF7 Rebirth and Remake titles are more easily differentiated in Japanese. Japan players acronym and abbreviate even more than we do in gameplay because the character lines are too long. Ico doesn't need an acronym nor further abbreviation. I tend to assume Japan-language titles are chosen more for the Japan player, we get off English things from them like Leonard (hero from Shirokishi).
Question, would you prefer for Dragon Age to get a soft rebranding and get a number next to the games (e.g. "Dragon Age 1: Origins" "Dragon age 2: Exodus") or keep it as it is?
Someone please translate this into Japanese and send a copy to every anime/manga/video game studio and publishing house. I mean by their standards Final Fantasy titles are quite ascetic.
Yea most names are dumb, but if you make the product pack heat its fine. Like the man who dresses up as a bat calls himself "bat-man". Thats a pretty dumb name.

I seem to get bombarded with trailers for ‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’. For some reason it makes me think of this video. Not sure why ;).

Same, I was always saying just call it Fallen Order. Much simpler. Hopefully the third game follows Jedi Survivor’s title. I really enjoyed that one.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is kinda weird actually, as it is prequel but has the titling of a sequel, which it is, but isn't
