    It's a thing. I spent 3 years as a drawbridge operator, and the expansion of the steel jams things up a bit. Nothing to really do with maintenance, just the climate.

    You’d think in modern times they’d have a system to monitor the temperature and expansion of the bridge that could be combined with a water wash down system to keep the entire bridge cooler. Seems no reason for this type of incident to happen.

    Now that’s something you don’t see everyday. Thanks Skyler

    In Netherlands its common on hot days to cool down steel bridges with water to prevent them from getting damaged due to expanding and getting stuck in a open or closed position.
    Expected this to be common as well in New York due to all those steel bridges.

    Its amazing to see all the different things FDNY has to deal with. Great catch 😊

    While Phoenix & Las Vegas don't have bridges like this, I wonder how the railroads in those areas will fare, with record heat in those areas.

    This happens in Chicago all the time too.

    Someone doesn't understand the physics of expansion.... The WHOLE length needs to be cooled. It wasn't just the ends that expanded. Each foot expanded a few thouosandths, and that added up to an interference fit. Cooling the last 15 feet won't do anything....

    • @ArmchairIC
      @ArmchairIC 13 дней назад +4

      That was my thought. I assumed they were going to sweep along the bridge not just hit the end. They were focused on the contact point not the reason it existed.

      I would think that they are doing what was requested by whoever is in charge of operating the bridge

    It's hard to believe, but true that marine traffic still has the right of way over trains and car traffic in 2024.

    Why not cool the other side too to keep both ends at approximately the same temperature?

    I’m curious as to why the larger fireboat keeps its radar spinning, whilst in such a narrow channel? Isn’t it better to minimise unnecessary radiation?

      @@stevensantiago1977realtors don't even call that section South Bronx anymore. It's "SoBro" or "The Piano District" now. Trying to make it sound more desirable to the hipsters, I guess.
      Still South Bronx to me, though.

      Steel expansion during heatwaves is common. There are no reports that this was due to neglect in maintenance. But severe weather changes will lead to more frequent long term problems for the world: affecting farming, healthcare, infrastructure, ecology etc…

    I think they should have called the tug boats, hooked up their ropes to the bridge and utilized the fire boats as well. If tug boats can guide a massive cruise who's to say that they couldn't handle a bridge.

    I don’t know … seems like another case of wasted resources of FDNY / NYPD . This is summer , ain’t the first time it’s been hot , won’t be the last. Think the bridge operators need to come up with a solution that doesn’t tie up first responders for something that’s not an emergency. Just my opinion … good coverage either way

    • @tgm9991
      @tgm9991 13 дней назад +1

      The marine units don't get to do much spraying of the deck guns let them have their fun if a water job came up they would be redirected to that anyway. Plus the bridge being stuck would affect response times too. The major technical response that they mentioned on the radio would likely have been very promptly downgraded to just a couple of units

    That bridge is like 5 years old they just replace it recently it not old at all some people commenting old infrastructure it not old at all

    • @45KevinR
      @45KevinR 8 дней назад

      Interesting, maybe the old bridge had larger tolerances to allow for expansion. Or wear had created a larger gap.
