Pacific 231, a Romanian built steam locomotive under J A Maffei license, wasn't only a locomotive, but one of the greatest pacific (3 motor wheels) steam locomotives of all time and in Europe.
The ultimate depiction of the movement of a steam locomotive. 2-3-1 refers to the 'grey scale', which is the arrangement of the wheels on a steam locomotive of the Pacific-class, namely a 4-6-2 [2 leading, 3 driving, 2 trailing] wheel arrangement.
Lots of predictable comments on here saying "beautiful music", "masterpiece" etc. This is NOT beautiful music. It is intentionally very rough, ugly music. This piece reflects all the putrid fuel and dirt and grease and the inexorable "chug-a-chug-a" of these locomotive snakes pulsating for hundreds or even thousands of miles on the tracks. The string parts are really well-written it looks like but sadly, are almost completely covered by the winds as the piece progresses. Super effective use of harmonics in the opening. That ending though....jesus. It's enough to make your heart stop. This is not a happy piece. It may not be unhappy, but it's not good-natured or fun in the least. I was in an orchestra that performed this piece one time, and also the short "Circus" Overture by Ernst Toch, whose title also belies what it really is...terrifying. Toch, like Honneger, was a great but underrated composer who today is even more forgotten.
@@PhilipDaniel Did he really say that?! Wow, I need to remember that. Ives was definitely The Man. People don't realize that he pre-dated even Stravinsky with his weird harmonic and atonal inventions. Genius. This piece was like a mini tone poem - I guess the subtitle "Symphonic movement" sorta suggests that.
It is fun to note the similarities between the last movement of Villa Lobo's "Bachianas 2", that is called " O Trenzinho Caipira" (Little train of the Caipira), and this work by Honegger. They were actually good friends in Paris, and you can see that Villa uses some of Arthur's ideas to depict the train. However, the Brazilian piece goes in a much more tonal, melodious, heart melting direction, as Villa changed his style after returning to Brazil in 1930.
Honegger is such an underrated genius. He and the other Les Six members aside from Poulenc and Milhaud deserve more recognition like these 2. I think of Mosolov's the Iron Foundry, Rails by Deshevov and many of Antheil's music
I ended up having Honegger being assigned to me to present for my 20th century music history class. The first half of it, it was a great assignment and allowed me to get to know this composers music and life more fully.
Puur kunst ! Arthur Honegger waseen lied van de Groupe de Six en schrijf over 200 werken , waarvan het orkest werk Pacific 231 , tot de bekendste behoort. In dit werk imiteert het symfonieorkest het geluid van een stoomlocomotief.
If you look at rehearsal mark 1, you can see that the bassoonists were simply not aware that the strings were assigned shorter note values. Therefore, the bassoonists didn't hold their notes full value, which is a shame since the change of tone color would have interesting.
I know you wrote this 4 years ago and have totally forgotten about it but that's a hoot! I'm sure you are the only one who noticed it. Least of all, the recording engineer who didn't make them go back and do it over again.
Thanks for the truly informative informational text. It told me a lot. I've only heard of the piece and knew the title, but I've never heard it. Interesting and nice.
Echt faszinierend!
Wonderfully composed, really full of awesome great cinema! You really feel the power the steam locomotive needs to set itself and the load (passenger cars, freight cars, etc. in motion). And to slow down the mass afterwards.
Ted Templeman, in his autobiography, mentioned this composition, referring to Long Train Running by the Doobie Brothers, and how he spurred the writers to think of a train chugging along. The writer, Tom Johnson, took his cues and wrote and composed the FM radio staple
From Wikipedia: The popular interpretation of the piece is that it depicts a steam locomotive, an interpretation that is supported by the title of the piece. Honegger, however, insisted that he wrote it as an exercise in building momentum while the tempo of the piece slows. He originally titled it Mouvement Symphonique, only giving it the name Pacific 231, a class of steam locomotive designated in Whyte notation as a 4-6-2, with four pilot wheels, six driving wheels, and two trailing wheels (the French, who count axles rather than wheels when describing locomotives, call this arrangement 2-3-1) after it was finished. See also the Wikipedia article on 4-6-2, which shows the locomotive the composer was writing about.
We currently have this song as subject in music class and I love it! I couldn't resist on searching for it on RUclips and listen to it's full glory... Definetely worth it!
Excellent notes. Thank you. I first heard this & many other classics on 78s including Ferde Grofé - Grand Canyon Suite which shares elements of impressionist musical portraits.
I think is the other way around. I don't know if Honneger even knew about Prokofiev. However after Prokofiev saw how successful this piece became, he wrote his second symphony which was a massive fail unfortunately. Nobody cared. This type of music was named in French the "mechanical style". Prokofiev was not the first one to do this type of music. It's inspiration came from the most advance technology of it's time, which was of course trains.
