Phalanx's final form. Each phase has had a different song but this one is just heavenly (or rather hell-y) with the organ and chanting. He's well animated and challenging.
Played through this a couple years ago. Really enjoyed it. Super difficult in parts though. I only had the patience to get the second best ending I think.
Excellent review, Demon's Crest is on the finest Snes experiences, to me it is among the highest, it pushes the Snes to its limits with gorgeous pixel art and the music is like nothing out there. For people who haven't played it you should.
Ooh this will be good. I loved this game when I was younger. I think my favorite part would be the last fight with Arma. Actually any fight with Arma was awesome. Then probably the fight with the Dark Demon just because I found it to be a fun fight. I'll be back to watch the video in about 7 hours or so!
The music is def a big highlight for me. I also like the fact that it doesn’t take too long to beat. I can’t do ultra long games anymore as I wouldn’t be able to finish them
For me one of my favorite levels is when the forest is burning ,having to avoid the fire falling from the top of the screen and if you die on the boss the trees burning are no longer on the screen and we see the smoke of the aftermath
Worst part is one you didn't mention. Probably because it's so easy to forget lol. The magic system. The spells you buy are nearly useless. If you have alot of the in-game currency to burn, you can summon a imp that stays out for as long as you got the coin per second. You can cheese some boss fights. The room clearing Demon spell looks cool and can rarely be useful. Not enough thought was put into it overall. Only other complaint is the slow down that could have totally been avoided if Capcom wanted. Otherwise I totally agree with everything you said. The sprite work is freaking amazing and, yes, the backgrounds just as good. Definitely one of Capcoms greats that many forget or don't know from my experience. Thanks for sharing man!
My friend had this when it came out. And yeah visually we both got grounded right away when the zombie dragon appears and we both went: "Holy Sh*t!" A week later when we could play it again we got lost in this one.
Played it a couple of years ago and it became one of my favorites, but once you aquire the Legendary Gargoyle, and later the Ultimate, you become the final boss and game needs to beat you.
@@Xygor Love your channel. I've been a pretty big fan for a while, was blown away when you started doing the videos on the Japanese-exclusive Square RPGs on the SNES like Live A Live, Rudras, Bahamut's Lagoon, etc.
Nice vid! I must say I kind of like the lower res look of the game in CRT mode from the commercial compared to the high res sharp pixels we get via upscaling emulation
Gargoyles Quest 2 is my favorite of the 3, it lets you fly without being so over powered in stages where it trivializes the game, and isnt as slow and plodding as Gargoyle Quest 1 on Gameboy. Its also, much like Demons Crest, one of the prettiest games for the system.
Liked this one a lot, but definitely thought it needed more/bigger levels to really make the exploration element pay off properly. Oh, and trying to beat that heatbutt game to get 100% completion was hell. Other than that, great stuff. ;)
I tried this one once but didn't get very far, I should get back to it. I guess it was because I absolutely loved Gargoyle's Quest II on the NES and this one was somewhat different.
The box art was too spooky for me when I was a kid, lol. I finally discovered how awesome it was on the switch. Also, that commercial is so bland, I feel like the guy is trying to sell me dish soap.
One of the finest games on the SNES for sure. The graphics, atmosphere, abilities, and controls are all top notch. True the game is a little bit on the short side for an action adventure. The levels are all about quality over quantity. The shorter length makes the game a managable replay every couple years too.
First, opening this video, it had 666 likes. Eek! I had to bump it up one. I played Demon's Crest in the 90's (Blockbuster rental) and loved it. I appreciate that it wasn't near as hard as Super Ghouls and Ghosts. The story is interesting. The game play is fun. Phenomenal game. To me, it's an easy 8-9 out of 10.
Got it on my Super Nintendo classic it sucks maybe if capcom would do a remake on it maybe it would be great I used to hate dragon quest final fantasy games but with power of the PS4 xbox one PS5 xbox series X they play great now I am interested in buying dragon quest 12 final fantasy 16 these games played so bad on the NES Super Nintendo they were a waste of money
I found this game through emulation in the pretty early days of the internet. Is really great game is a classic and I had never heard of it. It's sad because I can imagine the title being a deterrent for a lot of people wanting to choose this game.
Calling Demon's Crest "one of the most defining action platformers on the console" is a huge stretch. It's a cool game but I don't think it sold very well.
I guess the 'Red Areemer' demon stuck in the minds of enough people due to how frustrating it was to fight, and so it earned its own spinoff series. Yet, much like Disney's Gargoyles it was ever shunned by its own creators for its dark gothic aesthetic, betrayed and left frozen in stone without any new games for 1000 years... or 28 years. Will Firebrand live again?
It wasn't at all betrayed. Demon's Crest, like Gargoyle's Quest 2 before it, was just released toward the end of the console life cycle, leading to poor sales & public knowledge.
@@NinjaRunningWild It came out 1994, which was a legendary year for the SNES. Donkey Kong Country 2, Mega Man X, Killer Instinct and Earthworm Jim all came out that year. Maybe that glut contributed to Demon's Crest's poor sales? I also heard rumors about how parents got disturbed by the games' dark imagery and returned the game before it could scar their kids for life, but can't corroborate that. Regardless, refusing to make any more games in the series after such a great one I would consider a betrayal.
Actually, after seeing a friend playing Gargoyles Quest on the GameBoy, I was rather disappointed in Demon's Crest. Years later seeing Gargoyle's Quest 2 on the NES, which was never released in Europe to my knowledge(at least I never seen it in stores), made me more disappointed in Demon's Crest.
I have a correction. You said there's two gargoyles quest games on the game boy but that's not true. The first game appeared on the game boy, and it's sequel was on the NES
Wasn’t super into the controls in this game. A little awkward to play, which made it hard to get into. It’s a game that LOOKS COOL and has a great theme/setting. Someone should make a sequel with better controls.
The best part of Demon's Crest is the story-line; it draws you into it's world despite us knowing practically nothing about it. I wish that Capcom would revive Firebrand's franchise back into the modern era; it would be devilishly delightful~
''Actually Gargoyle’s Quest II was on the NES not the GB . '' probably a geek This series is so underrated and I.M.H.O Demon's Crest should have been as popular as Mega Man X .
Greatest? Doubtful, its good but only caught attention after youtubers gave it attention, but normally even now with the attention when you start talking mega man x, contra, castlevania, metroid etc etc, this game gets lost in the conversation
I always say: "Demon's Crest is my favorite Megaman X game". I know, they're not related at all, but both games share a lot of things, from the choice of levels, to unlocking new areas after getting the right powerup. Maybe this one is less straight forward, more like a slightly simpler metroidvania.

I found the game quite subpar. The gargoyle is too bulky and slow for his own game. The game is far too cryptic regarding the endings and the backtracking is beyond irritating. The music gets on the player's nerves eventually. The composer loved the pipe organ far too much.

Played this game as a teen and absolutely loved the Gothic aesthetics. Ganeplay was fun but I felt the controls were a bit stiff at times.
I'd love to see a lore video about Demons Crest. Love this game. Definitely in my top 5
I remember playing this game and getting multiple endings. I told friends about it but no one heard of it except one friend.
For me one of my favorite levels is when the forest is burning ,having to avoid the fire falling from the top of the screen and if you die on the boss the trees burning are no longer on the screen and we see the smoke of the aftermath
a great game. They had one for NES, GameBoy and SNES. The gameboy was quite good as well.
True, very good games!
I love this game. It’s so much fun. I’ve seen it get some hate, and it’s not perfect, but it’s world is so engrossing
That Demons Crest commercial seems light years removed from the “Welcome to the Next Level” campaign lol.
I believe there was one on the NES too. I love this game. I feel like it needed to be just a bit longer.

It's a beautiful game. I owned it when it first came out. Mesmerizing game

Great video! Love this franchise. One thing though.. there is only one Gargoyles Quest on the GB and the other one is on the NES.
My bad!
@@Xygor correction: there was another gb gargoyle’s quest as a port of the nes gargoyles quest II. In japan only.

Strong Castlevania: Symphony of the Night vibes from the gameplay videos.
True!
I can beat both quests for super ghouls and ghosts in 2 or 3 lives but this game is still hard for me lol.
