Thank you! A nice presentation on Armenian Medieval Architecture, Dr. Maranci! But it would have been more interesting to mention the importance of the Armenian architecture and its influence on the European, Georgian and Eastern architecture! You didn't talk about the Zvartnots temple (restored by T. Toramanyan) and Zvartnots-like temples in Ani multi-storied cylindrical churches especially. You didn't mention the Garni temple either which is an example of Armenia-Hellenic architecture. And nothing was mentioned about the elements of Gothic architecture in the arrows and arches/vaults in Ani Cathedral, long before they emerged in Europe.
In ancient times the liturgies were quite long and the churches were usually crowded. The purpose of gavit was to allow people to circulate through the church, enabling everyone to listen to the liturgy.
According to Prof. Garbis Armen of Canada (author of "The Future of Armenian Architecture in North America"), the Architecture of Armenian churches has evolved to have the buildings resist the frequent earthquakes in our region. This was achieved by reducing the length of walls and interspersing them with corners and angles that help hold the building together better in the case of an earthquake.
Wow this comment you’ve left was omniscient prophetic, given the turn of events in the region in recent months. How very amazing that the Armenian people honored nature, respected nature, and had the discipline to plan and create accordingly.
Beautiful Armenian churches God bless Armenian and Armenians . Տէրը պահպանի մեդ սցգ ե հսյրենիքը
