- It’s been quite the educational journey transforming the airwell in my home!
Let’s just say I’ve learned a lot about slowing down and not having to have everything figured out when it comes to new designs in the GARDEN or even LIFE. It’s an ever changing journey.
This video will take you through the 7 PHASES with lots of advice on avoiding the mistakes I made, haha! Enjoy peeps!

Thank you for this realistic look into plant parenthood. I've often been overwhelmed by the sheer enormity of my collection and now realize that it's ok to chill out and appreciate what I have. I really enjoyed seeing your process and of course the beautiful end result!
Hey there, Melodye! Absolutely, I think we added a bit too much at one point (mostly over the Covid period) and now that things are back in motion, we aren’t able to give all of them the attention they need. You’re absolutely right…. It’s ok to slow down, lose a few plants along the way, learn, recover and know what plants work for us in the long run.
Thanks for your beautiful comment! Cheers!
I’m so grateful you posted this. I appreciate the brutal honesty of the entire process and your experience over time. Very good lessons throughout the video. Thank you for sharing your wisdom and your insights. Please keep posting content.
It was a rough and rewarding journey so it was worth a share and I truly appreciate having you tune in. Will do my best with more consistent postings. Thanks again!
I just found your channel via Irene's Leafing around.
Thank you for sharing both, the good and the bad. I wondered how you would maintain such a green wall with so many different plants. But then of course, I am already in my 50's, so I have made almost all of the possible errors already myself.
As I had a bunch of sons, I needed to keep my huge garden simple, but I had lots of animals and also crops to care for, and I also wanted all kinds of herbs and plants for dyeing yarn and fabrics, etc. The hardest part though was the kitchen garden for me. I literally got overwhelmed by the many by standing plants sprouting and I didn't know which ones to keep and which one to weed out. Oh my, I made sooo many mistakes in the first three years. 😂
We all get better with time moving on and practice teaching us the rules to follow. So keep up trying and learn from failures, because these you will never forget again and therefore also won't repeat them. 😉
Hey Lisa! Thanks for sharing your wonderful (and educational) journey and for your encouraging words!
Absolutely, some plants would thrive better than others on a wall. With consistent care, it wouldn’t have been too bad but as life gets in the way, well let’s just say the garden ain’t stopping for nobody! Haha!
I have 3 brothers and I completely understand keeping the garden simple! From flying soccer/basket balls to falling over on plant beds, etc. The absolute horror! Hahaha.
Up till this very point, I still question what sort of veggies are growing in my childhood garden. To weed out or not to weed out. Looks like we both have learned a lot through our experiences and are still learning everyday.
Thanks again for your wise and thoughtful words and have a blessed day Lisa! 🤍
Gorgeous!!! Thank you so much for sharing the good and BAD...some RUclipsrs only show their gardens and plants when they look perfect and that's not real to me. You are such an inspiration!!
Hey Cindy!! Absolutely, I know a lot of us can relate to the challenges that come with plant care. Almost needs to be a full time job! Hahaha. Thanks again for your beautiful comment!
@@rooteddaunYou're right about the full time job! Hahaha! I'm so glad I found you!
HAHA! Likewise!
WoW 🤩👏👏Amazing work, I’m Sree from USA 🇺🇸 , I found your RUclips channel through Leafing Around and subscribed as well. First of all, I would love to appreciate you by saying- YOU DID A GREAT JOB and secondly, YOU HAVE A LOTS OF PATIENCE, to respond to everyone in your channel. Your parents a really great, Please convey my Best Wishes to your parents for making you grow such a nice gentleman 👍🏼God bless you and be Happy always.
Coming to my plants, I’m having more indoor plants but outdoor we cannot grow more due to winter at snow time, they won’t survive outside. So most of plants are indoor only.
I’m full time working, so hardly I will get time to check on my plants on weekends only with my two pets ( Bird and Dog), my son teases me by saying I’m making home like a forest /Jungle 😂 Thank you and Take care, Sree.
Aww, what a heartfelt and truly beautiful comment. Thanks ever so much, Sree. 🤍 HAHA, well all of you have taken your time to write such lovely messages on my videos, so I truly want to respond to each one.
Also, all glory to God and my parents for moulding me into the person I am today. I will be sure to convey your best wishes!
Indeed, seasonal challenges over there but what an amazing selection of seasonal plants that create all year round interest. Yes indeed, work does eat up most of our time. At least we have the weekends. Haha.
Let your son know that it’s turning into a wildlife park and you’ll be charging entrance fees soon. Haha!!
Once again, you truly made my day with your kind words. May God shower his abundant blessings upon you and your family. Take care, and all the best with your sanctuary! 🤍
Excellent content! Thank you for the honesty and for sharing your well-earned advice.
Thank you very much! Happy to share.
Looking forward to phase 8😊
Haha, I would like to think it’ll be better than before but I doubt it. All in good time :)

Aww, thanks very much! I’ve been binge watching K-drama lately! Haha. Greetings from Borneo.
Hi Keith
Just found you thru Irene's youtube.
I am in Melbourne Australia and am setting up an unheated conservatory, so i am keeping all your advice in mind. It's all about trial and error, observation and learning in this game.
I hope, in the future, when i visit my brother in Sandakan, to be able to come and view your garden.
Hey there John. Sounds great! Indeed, you articulated it perfectly. I do hope it all goes well. Could always get some personal advice from your local garden centres too but nothing beats having your own experience through it all.
If time permits and the garden is looking good, then sure thing. Cheers!
@@rooteddaun BTW, you mentioned getting root rot in your soil propagation. Have you considered adding perlite to the potting soil for better aeration?
I’ve actually created different mixes for several genera/genuses. Some with more rocks, some with perlite and pumice, some with charcoal, etc.
The rot was during the beginning stages of moving into my new place (2021) as well as pests in the soil. Also, was experimenting with different media types until I found the right balance.
Didn’t help that the cheaper pots I bought have poor drainage as well as my overwatering tendencies at that time. Haha!
Have learned tons since and the plants seem to be thriving in my mixes. Perhaps would do a video on that at some point.
Nice job tho hard work n plenty of effort ❤jiayu 🎉
Aww, thank you very much! 🤍
Thanks for sharing your learning process with your airwell. I only WISH I had one to benefit from your experience! I really admire your honesty in showing your successes as well as your failures. That takes guts. Good for you!
You’re most welcome and thank you for your kind words Sheri. Truly means a lot. Have a beautiful day!
Wow beautiful 😍😍😍❤️
Aww, thanks Adam!! ✨
Lovely...
Thank you for sharing your great work...Sir!
Say HELLO to all your Plants..
Thank you very much! I will do, the ones that are still alive. Haha!
It was exhausting , but you have your OWN PERSONAL JUNGLE in fornt of your living room. . How many people can show of with something like that ? In my oppinion you should test 2-3 anthuriums to see how it goes first . And ferns are so decorative, it would be pitty not to keep some of them. I love anthuriums too, but I don`t have luck with them. Congratulationsfor your creation, it is unique and gorgeaus! 💚👍👏
So kind of you to say!! That is true, it has paid off and I’ve definitely learned along the way. I had 2 Anthuriums there for a while and they did quite well. Recently took them down for repotting, and the pots were full of healthy roots so I think I’ll give more a go. May keep a mixture of ferns as you suggested. Hopefully you’ll give Anthuriums another shot in chunkier mixes. They are absolutely stunning. Thanks again for tuning in and for your lovely comment! 🤍
@@rooteddaun Thanks for the advice. It is not the soil. The problem in my appartement is the heating under the windowsill, so anthurium did well in late spring, summer, early autumn, - in this time they were on the windowsill and got enaugh light. But when the heating was on , I had to put them next to the window and having low light , they were not happy at all. So I had to choose low light plants, but it is ok, happy to have any plants. I can admire anthuriums on youtube or somewhere else.
Ah, I totally get you! As long as you know your growing conditions are, then you know what works best for your space. Thanks for sharing.
Nice video. Very educational.
Thanks buddy!
Your wall is wonderful.
How do you fix the pots to the wire please?
Thanks Dee! Glad you like it.
If you jump to the time stamp 14.29 in this video, I have a little explanation on the how to.
The main structure is BRC metal which is drilled into the wall. The piece is usually used within the foundation works for homes or buildings.
The pots rest on the wall behind and the metal bars below. There is a little piece of garden wire going across each pot to prevent them from falling forward.
Hope it helps!
Very nice airwell! But when it rains, where is that water draining? Do you have a special drainage system set up in the airwell for when it rains?
Aww, thanks Kris! The airwell came with the house and already had the drainage system in place. Channels all around leading to the gulley, which then directs the water to the main sewage line.
Okay I'm now seeing the part where you talk about drainage. My bad lol
Hahaha, all good.
Hi
Beautiful !
I would like to make vertical garden inside my leaving room.
Light is low to medium.
Pl suggest some good plants
Hello there Rajesh, aww thank you and some plants that would be suitable are Monstera, Philodendron and Pothos. However, due to a lack of light, the new leaves will keep getting smaller. All the best!
When u get tired of gray color, try dark brown paint ❤😅
Hehe sounds good and will keep that in mind, thanks. So far it’s been 2 years and I’m still in love with this Crater Black colour. Timeless. 🤍
@@rooteddaunphilodendron, pothos, rubber tree and begonia plants are easy to grow in that vertical backdrops 🫰🏻🎬
Room for rent ?
Gavinnnnnn…HAHA!
Honestly didn’t like it sorry not sorry I like his outdoors one though….that one is amazing
Hopefully Phase 8 would be better. Haha! Didn’t really have a plan for this one.
Thanks for tuning in and glad you like the one outdoors. It’s currently being redesigned too. Cheers.
@@rooteddaun it’s just way to dark the plants get lost in it… don’t get me wrong it’s beautiful but it’s beauty is lost in the dark you have nice plants in it they just don’t stand out that what I’m trying to say …
I do love darker colours and it creates more depth (similar to a jungle or forest).
However, I may decrease the amount of plants for each one to be appreciated. I think I added too many in the beginning. Haha!
