The Damian Lillard Problem

  • With the Damian Lillard trade request dominating the NBA offseason, the Portland Trail Blazers are in a difficult position. The Miami Heat are the top suitors for Dame at the moment, with a potential Tyler Herro trade package being the focal point of the deal.
The rift between Dame and Portland has been growing ever larger for years now, and with it finally at a tipping point, the Blazers are just hoping to capitalize on his trade value as much as possible. But a Damian Lillard Miami Heat trade would likely not net Portland nearly enough to make them even remotely interested in moving him. With Damian Lillard's agent reportedly warning other front offices not to trade for him, things have become even more complicated.
This whole ordeal spawns a very interesting conversation about the supermax contract in the NBA, and how it punishes teams and players for being loyal to one another. Damian Lillard has always been constantly mentioned in NBA trade rumors, but Dame time has come to an end in Portland.

It’s a lose-lose situation for the front office tbh. If they don’t trade Dame to Miami they’ll be critized for not respecting Dames wishes. But if they trade him to the heat, they’ll be criticized for the bad return package. Hard pill to swallow.

Not really, because Portland has all the leverage here, they can just shelf dame for a year, even 2 if need be until they get a reasonable package. As they would be rebuilding and tanking anyway after trading dame, they do not need the assets now and have all the time in the world. Dames camp made a huge mistake here not understanding they have 0 leverage in this.

I think Portland made a crucial mistake that makes the potential Dame to Miami trade even more complicated is that Joe Cronin has "revealed" his hand by publicly stating that he's not impressed with what Miami was offering, pointing out that he does not want Tyler Herro. The Heat were willing to oblige and look for a 3rd team to help getting it done, but Cronin's words may've reached to other GM's who might not be willing to give away players and picks that would be used to be re-routed to Portland (teams like San Antonio, Utah or OKC). The Nets are more willing to be part of it, but that's because they want to dump Ben Simmons and his awful contract and that will most likely happen - Portland will get Ben Simmons and Duncan Robinson (maybe throw in Royce O'Neal or Dinwiddie as well) + some 1st rounders. Cronin will then have no choice by take the L and resign as GM.

  • @behindthearcyt

i think dame will eventually be traded to the heat right now we are seeing a leverage battle dame and his agent are telling other teams off so they have to most leverage when negotiating with the blazers gm joe cronin on getting him to the heat while joe cronin is trying to show he will listen to other trade offers besides miami to get leverage saying to dame hey we don’t have to trade you to heat you don’t have a no trade clause like bradley beal we can trade you to whatever team we think gives us the best trade package which is why we won’t see a dame trade for another couple weeks or even month

There’s no other willing trade partners w more assets than Miami. This all negotiation tactic which is normal.
