Nikolaj Abildgaard: The Danish Master Who Defined Neoclassicism and Romanticism. Born in Copenhagen in 1743, Nikolaj Abraham Abildgaard became one of Denmark’s most influential painters and teachers. After studying at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, he traveled to Rome, where he absorbed the classical influences of Raphael, Titian, and Michelangelo. Upon returning to Denmark, Abildgaard became a professor and later the director of the Academy, where he helped shape the Danish Golden Age of painting. His works evolved from Neoclassicism to Nordic Romanticism, often featuring dramatic mythological and historical themes. Join us as we explore Abildgaard’s journey, from his early classical influences to his pivotal role in Denmark’s artistic development.
