@@Good-Enuff-GarageDo you know if the whole battery pack chassis is the same diameter between the older and newer pack ? I wonder if it was worth the shot trying to retrofit the 12kW pack into the 2017 model if I happened to find the wrecked 2020 car battery pack somewhere.
honestly no idea, as it may be too early to tell, these are from a 2018 model, so as I write this they are going on only 4 years, also if and when they are no longer usable to power an electric vehicle, they can live on as a PowerWall in your house I believe, of course gals reconfigure the pack from six in a series (360v) to parallel (only 60v)
@@Good-Enuff-Garagemy 2017 530e battery pack started to lose capacity after 5 years and 50.000 km. I’d say 40% battery degradation from new. BMW 6 year warranty only covers damaged cells so allegedly they replaced 3 of 6 modules but I’ve seen just 3-4 km added to my EV range so maybe 10% capacity gained and battery still degraded with 30% as of now. All warranty process took 6 months and they call everything is fine with my battery and refuse to do anything with it. It’s pathetic when you think car costed 68k € brand new. New battery at the dealer is 10k. Just stay away from BMW guys.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR THE INFORMATION, wondering if it is good idea to buy a used cheap 2018 BMW 5 Series 530e xDrive iPerformance Sedan AWD and change the battery ,is it a good idea or not and what is the approx price for the battery today
I would pass on a 2018 model as in July of 2019 BMW came out with a much better battery pack, still the exact same physical size but this one code name SP41 is 12 kWh instead of the old one the SP06 which was only 9 kWh
These batteries are really light Sasha Anis from mountain pass performance uses them in his hybrid 350z Does the Bms require to be hacked to use them in our projects?
i dont know of anyone who has reversed engineered the OEM BMS yet, what they do is use something like SimpBMS aka an aftermarket master circuit board to connect to all the individual OEM slave BMS boards, I think all that shit just talks CAN 🤷🏼♂️
Great video. Thanks. One thing I notice are the spade connectors. BMW claim 360 kW electric power from such a battery equalling 1000A! Is that really realistic?
the pack fully charged is 398 volts, where did you see the claim you speak of? I would like to read up on it, keep in mind this pack uses 200A contactors
each battery module is about 28 pounds and there are six of them I would round up to 30 pounds for the cables etc so 180 pounds but you don't have to keep it in it's standard configuration ie box, please check out the write up in this thread, the link lands you directly to where I weigh it www.diyelectriccar.com/threads/i-bought-a-bmw-530e-hybrid-battery-pack-now-what.205943/page-6#post-1080969

dont mean to be a dingleberry but you mean six modules, and each module has 16 cells, cells are the smallest unit, you buy these in packs aka a battery pack contains 6 modules, I bought the first one for $900 and the second battery pack for $1,100 two years ago, but those days are gone, now they go upwards of $2,500, and you hardly see them sold individually, last time I saw a single module it was like $300 plus shipping and for some reason it had no connection terminals
